Lesson 5

Hello everybody.

How are you doing?

Welcome to lesson number five of absolutely essential words.

So in this lesson as always we will introduce twelve essential words.

And we will understand the definitions and we will try to use these words in different contexts and different examples to make you understand and to realize the meaning.

So are you ready? Let’s get started.

Word number one is tradition, tradition. So tradition is a very essential word means beliefs, opinions and customs handed down from one generation to another.

As you can see in this picture there is one tradition maybe in this picture, you can see the girls and people get together on a special occasion.

They dance. So they have special beliefs. And this is called tradition, tradition.

Let me give you some examples.

a.The father tried to persuade his son that the tradition of marriage was important.

The father tried to persuade. Do you know the meaning of persuade?

This is an essential word and we learned this word in previous lessons, persuade means convince or try to win or do somebody. So

b. All religions have different beliefs and traditions. Exactly.

c. As time goes on, we will eliminate traditions that are meaningless.

Yes. Eliminate here means to remove something, eliminate.

And we learned this word. So tradition. The first word of five 504 essential words.

Word number two is rural. Rural. So if you look at this picture what do you remember? things about a village right?

So rural, rural means in the country, in the village, rural.

a. Tomatoes are less expensive at the rural farm stand.

They are less expensive. Can you remember the meaning of expensive? Yes expensive means costly.

b. Rural areas are not densely populated. Densely populated. Dense means thick. Right?

We learned this word in the previous lesson I guess.

c. the rural life is much more peaceful than the city one.

I completely agree with this word, with this sentence.

The Rural Life is much more peaceful than the city one.

Word number three is burden, burden.

So this picture can actually show the meaning of burden.

Yes burden means what is carried or a load.

a. the burden of the country’s safety is in the hands of the president

b. Irma found the enormous box too much of a burden.

Yes enormous means very big. Right? Yes.

This is one of the 504 essential words and we learned it in the previous lesson.

c. Ricky carried the burden throughout his college career.

Yes burden means what is carried or a load that you have to carry on your shoulders. Burden, burden.

Word number four is campus, campus. This word is related to university as you can see in this picture.

Campus means the grounds of a college, university or school.

So when we speak about the grounds of college, university or school we can say campus.

a. The campus was designed to utilize all of the college’s buildings.

b. Jeff moved off campus when he decided it was cheaper to live at home.

c. I chose to go to Penn State because it has a beautiful campus.

Ground of college, university or school is called campus, campus.

The next word is majority, majority.

So the picture shows the meaning of majority, majority means the large number; greater part or more than half, majority.

Or we can say most of the people or most of things. Majority.

a. A majority of votes was needed for the bill to pass.

b. The majority of people prefer to pay wholesale prices for meat.

Can you remember the meaning of wholesale? When we speak about wholesale we speak about actually large quantities which are less expensive.

c. In some countries, the government doesn’t speak for the majority of people.

Majority means greater number or more than half. Very essential word.

The next word is assemble, assemble. As you can see in this picture actually guys, girls and boys they have assembled. Assemble means gather together or bring together. Gather together or bring together.

Let’s use this word in different examples and contexts.

a. The rioters assembled outside the White House.

They got together.

b. I’m going to assemble a model of a spacecraft.

c. All the people who had assembled for a picnic vanished when the rain began to fall.

So the essential word in this sentence is vanish.

We have studied this words in previous lessons. Vanish means to disappear suddenly, right?

Can you remember the meaning of this word? Maybe yes. So assemble means gather together.

The next essential word is explore.

As you can see in this picture the boy’s trying to explore something which means go over carefully; look into something very closely or examine. Right, examine.

a. lawyer Spence explored the essential reasons for the crime.

The essential reasons, the most important reasons, the most necessary reasons.

b. The weather bureau explored the effects of the rainy weather.

They actually looked very carefully and very closely into the effects of the rainy weather.

c. Sarah wanted to know if all of the methods for solving the problem had been explored, explored.

Look into something very closely or examine something.

Let’s go and jump to the next word. The next essential word is topic I think most of you guys know the meaning of topic which means subject that people think, write or talk about.

a. Predicting the weather is our favorite topic of conversation.

Predicting. Do you know the meaning of predict? It means to tell beforehand. It’s actually repetitive word and we have studied this word in previous section.

b. Valerie only discussed topics that she knew well.

c. The speaker’s main topic was how to eliminate hunger in this world.

Eliminate means to remove something right? Yes. topic.

The next essential word is debate. As you can see in this picture there is a discussion and debate and actually debate means a discussion in which reasons for and against something are brought out. Debate.

a. Debate between two candidates was heated. The debate between two candidates was heated.

b. Debate in the U.S. Senate lasted for five days.

c. Instead of shrieking at each other, the students decided to have a debate on the topic.

Shriek. Can you remember the meaning of shriek? Shriek means yes scream or to shout loudly.

The next essential word is evade, evade. Asyou can see in this picture actually the fifthactually the thief is evading and the police is actually following him.

So evade means get away from by trickery or cleverness. Evade.

Let me give you some examples.

a. Joanne tried to evade the topic by changing the subject.

He tried to get away from the topic.

b. In order to evade the police dragnet, Ernie grew a beard.

c. The Prisoner of War evaded questioning by pretending to be sick.

So evade here means to get away from something by cleverness. A very essential word.

Probe, probe.

What is the meaning of probe? Probe means search into; examine thoroughly or investigate. Probe.

I think it’s, can be, this word can be the synonym of explore that we studied this word just few minutes ago.

a. The lawyer probed the man’s mind to see if he was innocent.

b. After probing the scientist’s theory we proved each was correct.

c. King Henry’s actions where carefully probed by the noblemen. Yes probe means to examine, to examine something thoroughly.

The next word is reform, reform. Reform is to make better; improve by removing the faults to make something better.

a. After the prison riot, The council decided to reform the correctional system.

b. Brad reformed when he saw that breaking the law was hurting people other than himself.

And the last example is

c. Only laws that force companies to  reform will clear the dangerous vapors from our air.

Vapors. An essential word in this sentence means what? Means the mist and the fog in the air. That is visible.

That is the end and we just studied and learn twelve the essential words in this lesson.
