Lesson 42

Hello my dear friends. Welcome to lesson number forty two of 504 absolutely essential words.

Like every lesson we’re going to teach you twelve essential words. We’re gonna use them in different sentences in different movies in different actually clips and a really interesting story.

So try to focus and try to understand these words. There are lots of options I have provided, I have given to my students in order to help them keep these words for a real long time and this is the last lesson of actually yeah 504 absolutely essential words.

Guys I suggest to review these lessons if you want to understand them. I suggest you to come back and write down stories write down sentences write down examples.

This is a great technique to understand these words for a real long time. You can always come back and ask me your questions. OK.

Let’s start with the first word of lesson number 42 and that’s maintain. Maintain means keep; keep up; carry on; uphold; support; declare to be true.

So maintain we use it as a verb most of the time which means to keep something to support something.

a. Angelo maintained his hold on the jagged rock though his fingers were becoming numb.

So we have one essential word here numb which means without the power of feeling.

Yes and jagged means something that is on even.

b. The judge maintained his opinion that the verdict was fair.

Yes guys verdict as we studied this word before means votes. Yes you write your actually name on the piece of paper and you just drop it in the box.

Another meaning of verdict is judgment as we know.

c. The pauper was unable to maintain his family without the help of charity.

Yes the poor man. Pauper means poor. The poor person was unable to maintain to support his family without the help of charity.

Charity as we all know is an organization that help poor people. So this is the first words of Lesson Number forty two maintain which means to keep and support.

Word number two is snub. Snub means treat coldly, scornfully, or with contempt, cold treatment.

We can use it as a verb and as a noun.

a. Darryl later apologized to Sally for snubbing her at the dance.

So he apologized. Apologize means to say Sorry.

b. Sandra was tormented by the thought that she might be snubbed by her classmates.

So when you are tormented, you are actually tortured or bothered we can say and we have studied these words in previous lessons.

c. I considered it a rude snub when I was not invited to the party. Yes I considered a rude snub.

Snub means cold treatment here.

Word number three is endure or some American people say endure. Endure means last; keep on; undergo; bear; stand or we can say tolerate.

And we use this most of the time as a verb.

a. How can you endure such disrespect?

How can you tolerate such disrespect?

b. The valiant officer endured serious burns on September 11th.

So the essential word here is valiant which means actually brave and courageous.

c. Dr. Hardy was confident he could endure the hardships of space travel.

We have two essential words in this sentence. The first one is confidence which means a person who was completely sure of himself or herself.

The next one is hardship which means difficulty. Yes difficulty.

The next essential word is wrath. W is not pronounced. Wrath. Wrath means very great anger or we can say you rage, rage.

a. Anticipating father’s wrath, we tried to give him the news slowly.

The essential word is anticipating which means expecting.

b. There is no rage like the wrath of an angry bear.

Yes there is no rage. Rage means wrath. Rage and a wrath are completely synonyms.

c. After Ernie’s wrath subsided, which means decreased we were able to tell him what happened.

So subside him in this sentence means to decrease or to descend.

The next essential word is expose.

Expose means lay open; uncover; Leave unprotected and show openly.

So when something exposed to something else it’s actually left unprotected.

Let’s use this verb in different examples.

a. Soldiers in an open field are exposed to the enemy’s gunfire.

Exactly.

b. Foolish actions expose a person to the sneers of others. Sneer means contempt or a bad behavior.

c. The article exposed the vital document as a forgery.

So we have two essential words here.

The first one is vital which means something that is very very necessary and the next one is document which means information.

Legend. Legend is story coming from the past which many people have believed; what is written on a coin or actually below a Picture.

That’s legend. Legend his used as a noun.

a. Stories about King Arthur and his knights are popular legends.

Popular is something that most of people love something that is famous, something that is actually well-known.

b. Legend has exaggerated the size of Paul Bunyan.

So the essential word is exaggerate which means to magnify to make something greater than it really is.

c. The legend on the rare coin was scarcely legible.

It was hardly legible. Legible is something that you can read something that you can easily understand and read. so that’s legible.

And we have studied these words in previous lessons.

Ponder, ponder means consider something very carefully to think upon something very carefully.

Not wishing to act hastily, the governor pondered the problem for days.

So hastily means quickly and without any care.

b. After pondering the question, the board decided to ground the parole.

As you know parole means letting somebody setting somebody free under some conditions.

c. The villagers faced with a famine pondered their next move.

And the essential word here is famine. Do you guys know the meaning of famine? famine means great actually famine. Yes.

Can you remember? Means great actually starvation.

Yes. Great starvation.

Drastic acting with force or violence.

And we use it as an adjective. drastic.

a. The police took drastic measures to end the crime wave.

b. The most drastic changes. The most violent changes in centuries have been taken place during our lifetime.

Century is one hundred years as you all know.

c. In the interests of justice, drastic action must be taken.

Yes, that’s it.

Wharf as you can see this picture platform built on the shore or out from the shore beside which ships can load or unload their stuff is called Wharf.

a. We watch the exhausted laborers unloading the cargo on the Wharf.

Yes the exhausted laborers means the tired laborers.

b. The lawyer insisted he continued firmly that his client his customer was never seen near the wharf where the crime had taken place had happened.

c. Waiting at the Wharf for the supply ships to unload was a starving multitudes of people.

Multitude means many yes means many.

Amend means change for the better or correct or we can say change or there is another synonym and that’s alter.

a. It is time you amended your ways. You change your ways.

b. Each time they amended the plan, they made it worse.

c. Rather than amend the club’s constitution again, let us discard it and start afresh.

So discard means to throw something away to get rid of something. Yes that’s it.

And the last word is ballot.

Ballot is a piece of paper use in voting; the whole number of votes cast; the method of secret voting; to vote or decide by using ballots.

So ballot is a paper we use to vote.

a. Clyde confident of victory, dropped his ballot into the box.

he’s confident he’s completely sure of himself.

b. After we counted the ballots a second time, Leo’s victory was confirmed. It was completely verified.

c. To avoid embarrassing the candidates, the candidate is a person who is chosen for a special position, we ballot instead of showing hands.

Yes we vote.

Actually we decided to vote and ballot is used as a verb here.

That is the last word.

And actually we learned twelve essential words and we’re going to use all of these words in a really interesting story.
