Lesson 20

Hello my dear friends. Welcome to lesson number twenty of five -four absolutely essential words.

In this lesson like always we are going to introduce twelve essential words that are used everywhere in different texts, passages news.

And we are going to use them in different context and give you clearer explanations. So are you ready?

Let’s get started.

The first word is emerge, emerge .emerge means to come out; come up or come into view.

As you know guys emerge is a verb.

But let’s use it in different examples.

a. When the fight was over, the underdog emerged the winner.

So we have an essential word in this sentence and that’s underdog.

Can you remember the meaning of underdog?

We studied the meaning of this words in previous lessons.

Underdog means a person who is expected to lose or we can say a loser.

b. you have to be nimble to emerge from the narrow opening in five seconds.

Yes you have to be nimble. Nimble is another essential word in this sentence which means fast and quick. You have to be nimble

c. What emerged from the bottle, what emerged from the bottle was a blend of fruit juices.

Actually yes and there is another essential word here and that blend which means mix. blend is a mix of something.

So this is the first words of five-four absolutely essential words, Lesson number 20. Emerge which means to come into view.

Word number two is jagged, jagged. Jagged means with sharp points sticking out; unevenly cut or torn.

That’s the meaning of jagged. Jagged.

a. being reckless Rudy didn’t watch out for the jagged steel.

And the essential word here is reckless which means a person who is not careful or we can say a person who is not watchful a person who is not cautious is reckless.

b. It is an enormous job to smooth the jagged edge of a fence.

Yes that’s a very difficult job.

And the essential word in this sentences is enormous which means something that is very big huge and bulky.

c. Leslie’s hair was so jagged it was scarcely possible to tell that it had just been cuts.

So the essential word here is scarcely which means barely or hardly.

So that’s the second word jagged. Very nice and essential word.

Word Number three is linger, linger. Linger means to stay on go slowly as if unwilling to leave. Linger. Linger is a verb.

We use it as a verb most of the time but let’s use this word.

This verb in different examples.

a. The odor didn’t vanish, but lingered on for weeks.

So odor means a good smell didn’t vanish.

Essential word here is vanish which means disappear.

We studied this word in previous lessons.

I’m not sure whether you can or you can remember it or not.

An example b. some traditions linger on long after they have lost their meanings.

Exactly.

And the essential word here is traditions which means beliefs that are handed down from one generation to another generation, traditions.

There’s another synonym for tradition and that’s custom and we studied this word in previous lessons as well.

c. After the campus closed for the summer, some students lingered on, reluctant to go home.

Very nice. in this sentence We have two essential words.

The first one is campus which means that grounds of college or university.

And the second one is reluctant which means a person who is unwilling to do something.

A person who is not interested in to do something very nice.

Many essential words we can find in different examples.

And these words with stars actually we have studied these words in previous lessons.

And if you cannot remember or you don’t know the meaning of these words you have to come back and actually learn these words.

The next one is ambush, ambush.

Ambush is a trap in which soldiers or other enemies hide to make a surprise attack. Ambush, ambush.

a. The ambush became a tragedy for those who attempted it because they were all killed.

The essential word here with the star is tragedy.

Tragedy, tragedy means a misfortune; a terrible event.

b. General Taylor raved about the ingenious ambush he planned.

Yes and we have two essential words here.

The first one is a raved which means to become very angry and the next one is ingenious which means clever.

So General Taylor he became very angry about the clever ambush about the clever trap he planned.

So we can understand the meaning of this sentence very clearly.

c. The troops lay in ambush in the dance woods all through the night.

Yes. So the essential word here as you can see is dance which means actually thick, thick. So dense woods means thick woods.

So that’s the essential word of this part. Ambush, ambush.

And you can see in this picture actually there is an ambush for this dog or fox or Wolf.

I cannot actually recognize what animal this is.

The next word is crafty, crafty. Crafty means skillful in deceiving others or we can say sly or tricky.

So two great synonym for a crafty are sly and tricky.

a. His crafty mind prepared a comprehensive plan to defraud his partners.

And we have two essential words here as you can see the first one is comprehensive which means complete covering everything.

And the next one is defraud which means to take people’s money through trickery.

b. Leo didn’t use brutal strength against his opponents, but he used his crafty bag of tricks to beat him beat them.

So we have some essential words here.

The first one is a brutal which means cruel.

Next one is opponents which means a rival a person who competes against others.

And again I have to say all of these words with the Stars we have actually studied these words in previous lessons.

We are just reviewing them right now and this is one of the best way to remember these words and keep them in mind for a very long time.

c. The Indians didn’t fall for the crafty ambush. And the ambush at the words that we study just a few minutes ago which means a trap.

The next essential word is defiant, defiant.

defiant enemies openly resisting or challenging defiance defying is an adjective.

Let’s use this word in different examples.

a. I refuse to be manipulated the defiant young woman told her father.

And the essential word here is manipulated which means to treat somebody in a really bad way.

I refuse to be manipulated or we can see abuse.

b. Professor Carlyle was defiant of any attempt to disapprove his theory.

So the essential word here is theory which means thoughts that are based on some actual information or there is another synonym for theory which is actually assumption, assumption.

c. Defiant of everyone, the addict refused to be helped.

And the essential word here is addict which means a person who cannot break his habits.

Defiant. Very nice word.

The next word is vigor, vigor.

There is a great connection between this picture and the word vigor. vigor means active strength or force.

So a. having a great deal of vigor, Jason was able to excel in all sports.

And the essential word here is Excel which means to do better than other people or to do better than other times.

Excel, Excel is the verb of the adjective Excellent.

We use the word excellent all of the time and the adjective is Excel which means to do your best to do better in something.

b. Tom Thumb made up for size by having more vigor than most people.

c. Putting all her cranks and vigor into that argument, Patsy persuaded me to let her drive.

And the essential word here is persuade it which means to convince somebody to make somebody believe you persuade.

We studied this word in previous lessons. Vigor.

Fragile, fragile something that is easily broken, damaged or destroyed or we can say delicate. Fragile. And fragile is adjective.

a. They expensive glassware is very fragile.

Expensive is essential word here which means something of high price or cost.

b. Things made out of plywood have a tendency to be fragile.

Yes very nice example.

c. On the box was a label that read, fragile! Handle with care.

So fragile is something that is easily broken and I think we need to handle these things very carefully because they are easily destroyed.

Very nice word.

The next word is captive. Captive means prisoner. A person who is prison somewhere. captive.

Let’s use this word in different examples.

a. The major was grateful to be released after having been held captive for two years.

So the major was grateful. Grateful is an essential words in this sentence which means thankful.

b. until the sheriff got to them out, the two boys were held in the barn.

c. Placido can hold an audience captive with his marvelous singing voice.

Very nice example captive which means Prisoner. Prisoner.

The next word is prosper. Prosper.

You can see in this picture the woman is prosper.

She is prosper.

Excuse me.

Prosper is a verb and the adjective is prosper.

So prosper means to be successful and have good fortune

a. Howard Hughes owned enormous sorry Numerous businesses and most of them prospered.

Numerous businesses.

The essential word in this sentences numerous which means many or several.

b. No one should prosper from the misfortunes of his or her friends.

And the essential word here is misfortunes which means terrible and bad lucks.

c. The annual report showed that the new business was prospering.

It was very successful and the essential words in this sentences annual which means something that happened yearly annual, yearly.

And this is a very essential word.

I think we studied this word in lesson number I’m not sure Maybe 14 or 16.

Devour, devour.

Very nice word. Devour means to eat hungrily; absorb; completely; take in greedily. Devour. Devour is a verb and we use it as a verb Most of the time.

a. It was a horrid sight to see the lion devour the lamb.

Yes it was a horrid sight. The essential word here is horrid which means terrible.

So it was a horrid sight. It was a terrible sight.

b. The animal doctor was pleased to see the terror terrier devour the dog food.

Yes. And the last example

c. My aunt devours four or five mystery books each week.

So here devours means to read something. so my aunt reads four or five mystery books each week.

That’s perfect.

That’s a very nice word.

So devour has two meanings.

It means to eat hungrily or to absorb completely.

Or we can use it to read something thoroughly.
