Lesson 18

Hello guys. How are you doing?

Welcome to lesson number eighteen five-four absolutely essential words.

Like every lesson we are going to introduce twelve essential and necessary words for you.

We’ll going to use them in different examples, Different actually context and we are going to give you some pictures to make actually good connection between the words and the pictures.

And we will help you to remember them for a very long time.

So are you ready to start with the first word?

Let’s get started.

Guys the first word is tragedy, Tragedy.

I think is in this picture of the guys dying and his friend is very sad. So this is a tragedy.

Tragedy means a very sad or terrible happening or a sad play. Tragedy. Tragedy is a noun.

a. It was a tragedy that some pioneers who were killed on their way west.

So the essential word in this sentence is pioneers which means people who are volunteer or volunteer to do something first.

b. If you had your choice between seeing or a comedy or a tragedy which play would you choose?

Actually if I had this choice I would choose comedy because tragedy is very terrible and sad.

c. Harry’s enormous jealousy led to the tragedy in their family.

We have two essential words in this sentence.

The first one is enormous. And the second one is jealousy.

Can you remember the meaning of these words?

Enormous means something that is very big huge and jealousy means wanting something that others have.

Tragedy was the first words of lesson number actually 18.

Word number two is pedestrian, pedestrian.

You can see in this picture there are lots of pedestrian. So pedestrian means a person who goes on foot or we can say simply Walker.

So Walker is a first and the best synonym for pedestrian.

Let me give you some examples.

a. After driving a bus all day, Norris liked to be a pedestrian and take long, casual walks in the evening.

So the essential word here is casual which means not planned or more speak about something that is very friendly and not serious that is casual.

b. The police say it is urgent that pedestrians stay on the sidewalk.

Yes. The essential word here is urgent which means something that is very necessary and very important.

c. I don’t doubt that a pedestrian can get places faster than a car in downtown traffic.

I do agree with this sentence.

So we have one essential word here and that is doubt, doubt means actually to be not sure about something.

When you are not sure about something, you have doubt.

The next word is glance. glance means to look at quickly or a quick look.

So glance can be the verb and we can use it as a noun to glance.

a. The observant driver glanced at the accidents at this side of the road.

And the essential words in this sentences is observant, observant driver means a careful driver or a watchful driver, a cautious driver.

b. I took one glance at the wretched animal and turned away.

Yes I took a quick look at the wretched animal. Wretched animal is actually we studied this word in the previous lesson.

So wretched means a person who is not lucky. Wretched or we can say unsatisfactory.

c. Thompson identified the burglar after a glance at the photograph in the police station.

So he identified. So identify means to recognize. To understand the identity or the picture of somebody, identify.

The next word is budgets. Budget.

I think this person this picture he’s trying to actually guess and underestimate and evaluate the budget.

So budget means estimate of the amount of money that can be spent for different purposes in a given time. Budget.

a. We had to decrease the budget this year because our club is Broke.

Exactly.

So we had to decrease. Decrease is a word is an essential word we studied in previous lessons.

So decreased means to lessen to reduce to bring something down.

b. The prominent executive presented her budget to the board of directors.

And the essential word here is prominent which means an important and a famous or popular person.

c. When my mother draws up her budget for the week, she sets aside a goodly sum for nourishing food.

For a nourishing food which means actually food that is nourishing.

It has a lot of supplements. It has lots of complimentary stuff or we can say it has a lot of proteins. So that’s it. Budget is a very essential word of this lesson.

Nimble, nimble. You can see in this actually picture the woman or the girl.

She is a runner and she is nimble. So nimble is active and sure footed or we can say quick moving; light and quick.

Yes for example I believe cat or mouse are nimble animals.

a. Although Dusty was a miniature poodle, he was nimble enough to fight bigger dogs.

So the essential word in this sentence is miniature which means small, small in size. Poodle, miniature poodle is a small poodle.

b. The nimble policeman leaped over the fence to pursue the car thief.

That’s a very good police officer.

So the essential word here is pursue which means to follow somebody. Yes to follow somebody.

c. With my nimble fingers, I’m good at texting messaging.

Oh good for you. So nimble.

The next word is manipulate. Manipulate is a verb which means to handle or treat skillfully. Manipulate. The noun is manipulation.

a. Scientists must know how to manipulate their microscopes.

So a microscope is a device that makes small things larger and everybody I think knows about microscope.

b. While Mr. Baird manipulated the puppets, Fran spoke to the audience.

c. The wounded pilot manipulated the radio dial until he made contact.

So manipulate means to handle or trade something very skillfully.

The next word is reckless, reckless. Reckless means careless; heedless or sometimes we can say a wild. Reckless.

Let me give you some examples.

a. We must not ignore reckless drivers, we must take them off the road.

Yes. So the essential word here is ignore. Which means can you remember the meaning of ignore?

Yes ignore means to give somebody or something no attention.

b. After breaking his hand fighting recklessly, Arthur decided to be more cautious in the future.

He decided to be more cautious. He decided to be more careful more actually watchful.

c. The reckless smoker ignited the entire forest.

Oh that’s really a big tragedy.

The essential word here is ignite which means to set something on fire.

That’s a really big tragedy.

The next horrid. Horrid.

Can you make a connection between this picture and horrid?

What’s the meaning of horrid? Horrid means terrible or frightful. Horrid is an adjective.

Janey avoided starting staring at the horrid man’s face.

So she avoided. So when you avoid something you actually keep away from doing something or stop doing something.

b. It is simply horrid the way cars pollute the air we breathe.

Exactly. And the essential word here is pollute which means to make something dirty.

c. When Mary was good she was very good, but when she was bad she was horrid. She was terrible.

So this is an essential word of this lesson, horrid.

The next word is rave.

Rave means to talk wildly. To talk wildly.

So rave is a verb here.

a. Shortly after taking the drug, the addict began to rave and form at the mouth.

The essential word here is addict. Addict is a person who cannot break the habits. Addict.

Speedily Excuse me speedy raved that his car had the capacity to reach 120 miles per hour. Yes.

c. Sadie was confident that Mr. Stebbe would rave about her essay.

So the essential word here is confident which means to be completely sure about himself or herself, rave.

The next word is economical, economical. Economical is adjective. Which means not wasting money or time.

So some people are economical. They don’t like to waste money or on time and this is I think a positive and good actually word.

a. I find it economical to shop in the large supermarkets.

b. Marissa was praised for her economical management of the budget.

We studied this words in previous lesson budget means the amount of money that you have to spend in a specific time. Actually a plan.

c. The president made Congress aware of the need to be more economical.

Yes aware beings to understand something to be actually realizing something. economical.

Guys are you economical? I hope so.

The essential words the next one is lubricate, lubricate is a verb and the noun is lubrication.

Lubricate means to make especially machinery smooth and easy to work by putting an oil.

We can see Grease or a similar substance. so lubricate means to grease machinery or device.

Let me put this words in different examples.

a. The bulky wheels of a railroad train must be lubricated each week.

Yes I agree with this sentence. There is an essential word here and that is bulky.

Can you remember the meaning of bulky? Yes bulky mean something that is very large or very big.

b. A large quantity of grease is needed to lubricate an airplane engine.

Quantity, quantity means a mount, a mount.

c. When an engine is lubricated it works much better.

Yes there is no question about this lubricates.

When my bicycle is not moving fast, I sometimes lubricate it to use.

You should do it too.

The next word is ingenious, ingenious.

I think these guys playing this games are ingenious in the pictures or ingenious means having great mental ability or we can say to be very clever. Ingenious means clever.

a. Bernie devised an ingenious plan to cheat on his income tax.

So she devised, devise.

This is an essential word we learned in previous lessons which means to create or to invent.

So she invented a very clever plan.

b. Rube Goldberg was a journalist who won fame for his ingenious inventions.

The essential word here is journalist which means newspaper man.

c. The master spy had an ingenious way of passing secrets to the agent.

So that was an essential word and that was the last word of this lesson.

And we studied well essential words. Do not forget to make examples with these words.
