Lesson 16

Hello my dear friends.

How’s it going? Is everything okay?

Welcome to lesson number 16 of five- four absolutely essential words.

As you know we’re goanna learn twelve essential words. We’re goanna give you lots of examples and we’re going to learn lots of other essential words in different contexts, in different examples.

Are you ready? Let’s get it started.

Word number one is slender, slender. As you can see in this picture the guy that is holding the hands of this little girl, slender which means a long thin; limited or slight.

So this is the meaning of slender.

a. Carlotta’s slender figure made her look somewhat taller than she was.

b. There was only a slender chance that you could conceal the truth.

So the essential word in this sentence is conceal.

Can you remember the meaning of conceal? Conceal means to hide something. Yes to hide something.

c. This lender thief was able to enter their apartment through the narrow window.

So slender means long and thin.

Word number two is surpass, surpass. Surpass means to do better than to be greater than or we can say excel.

We use this word as a verb.

a. The machines of the twenty first century surely surpass those of earlier times.

The machines of the twentieth century. So the essential word here is century which means one hundred years, right. One hundred years.

b. Most farmers believe that rural life far surpasses urban living.

Exactly. I do agree with this sentence. We have two essential words here.

The first one is a rural which means something that is related to the country to the village and urban which is something related to this city.

Okay. And these two words are the opposite. A rural and urban.

c. It is undeniable that a cold lemonade in July can be surpassed.

Yes it is undeniable. It is unquestionable. It is very certain.

This is an essential word in this sentence. Surpass, surpass.

Vast, vast. Vast means very great or we can say enormous, enormous. something that is very big.

a. Daniel Boone explored vast areas that had never been settled.

Yes the essential word here is explorer to which means search.

When you search somewhere very completely you explore it.

b. Our campus always seems vast to new students.

The essential word here is campus which means actually the grounds of college or schools is called Campus, campus.

c. Vast differences between the two sides were made clear in the debate.

So there is essential word here and that’s debate.

Debate is a discussion between politicians. We call it debate. So this is a very nice word vast, vast.

The next word is Doubt, doubt. Doubt means not believe;

Not be sure of or feel uncertain about something or the lack of certainty when. you don’t feel actually certain about something you actually have doubts.

Doubt is a verb and a noun. We can use it as a verb and we can use it as a noun.

Let me give you some examples.

a. Scientists doubt that a total cure for a cancer will be found soon.

Yes they are not sure about this.

b. The question of whether he could survive the winter was left in doubt.

The essential word here is survive which means to stay alive after an incident or event or tragedy, to survive.

c. We don’t doubt that the tradition of marriage will continue.

Yes we don’t doubt that the tradition. Tradition is essential word here which means a belief that is handed down from one generation to another generation.

Actually there was another synonym for that tradition.

Can you remember it? I taught you this and I mean the previous lessons and that is actually custom.

Yes custom is a great synonym for tradition.

Capacity, capacity. Capacity is the amount of room or space inside; largest amount that can be held by a container.

So when you speak about the amount or the room inside it is inside somewhere we can say that this is the capacity.

Let me give you some examples.

a. A sign in the elevator started, stated that its capacity was 1100 pounds.

Yes.

b. The gasoline capsule had a capacity of 500 gallons.

Yes. So capsule is an essential word here capsule.

Actually we can use it as a container.

c. So well-liked was the prominent speaker that the auditorium was filled to capacity when he began his lecture.

So we have a very nice and essential word here and that is prominent.

Can you remember the meaning of prominent? Prominent means a very important. Very actually famous person, prominent.

Penetrate. Penetrate means get into or through something. Get into or through something. Penetrate. Penetrate is a verb and the noun is actually penetration.

a. We had to penetrate the massive wall in order to hang the mirror.

Yes.

The essential word here in this sentence is massive. Massive which means something that is bulky very huge and very large massive.

b. Although Kenny tried to pound the nail into the rock with a hammer, he couldn’t penetrate the hard surface.

Yes it couldn’t get into the hard surface.

c. The thieves penetrated the bank security and stole the money.

Oh shit. That’s really bad. So they penetrated.

They get into the bank’s security. Security is an essential word here which means safety. Security means safety. Yes.

The next essential word is Pierce, Pierce. As you can see in this picture the man with long hair has pierced ears and pierced nose and pierced I guess lips.

So Pierce means go into; go through, penetrate. Penetrate the previous word is a great synonym for Pierce,too.

a. My sister is debating whether or not to get her ears pierced.

The essential word here is debating. Debate means discussing OK. Arguing.

b. I tried to ignore his bad violin playing, but the sound was piercing.

Yes. The essential word here is ignore. Which means to give somebody no or little attention. when you ignore somebody give him or her no attention.

c. Halloran violently pierce the skin of his rival causing massive bleeding.

So Halloween violently. So the essential word. We have lots of essential words here violently means cruelly, cruelly.

And rival means Actually we have this word in previous lessons.

Rival is a person who compete against you and actually massive means something that is large, very large or very big.

Accurate. Accurate means exactly right as the result of care or pains. something that is exactly right.

a. Ushers took an accurate count of people assembled in the theater.

So assembled is an essential word here which means to get together.

b. Emma’s vision was so accurate that she didn’t need glasses.

This essential word here is vision which means the power of seeing. So her vision her power of seeing was so exact that she did need glasses.

c. In writing on the topic Virgil used accurate information.

The essential word here is topic which means subject or the theme.

Very nice word. Accurate, accurate is adjective and the noun is accurate actually accurate can be the adjective and the noun sometimes.

But if you want to use it as an adverb we say accurately, accurately. Yes.

The next essential word is a microscope.

It’s pretty easy. You can see the picture of microscope on the lift.

So microscope is an instrument with the lens for making objects larger so that one can see things more clearly.

That’s the meaning of microscope.

a. The students used a microscope to see the miniature insect.

So the essential word here is miniature which means in actually small scale.

When young Oprah’s birthday came around, her uncle gave her a microscope.

That’s a good I guess gift or a present.

c. Using a microscope, the scientist was able to probe into the habits of germs.

That’s very nice and the essential word here is probe which means to explore something or to search into something. that’s the meaning of probe.

Next word is grateful which means feeling gratitude or thankful.

The best synonym for grateful is thankful. yes thankful.

I’m very grateful that my friend gave me this beautiful gift for my birthday.

a. The majority of pupils felt grateful for Mr. Ash’s help.

The essential word here is majority which means more than half, more than half.

b. We were grateful that the gloomy weather cleared up on Saturday.

The essential word here is gloomy which means gloomy weather is a dark and depressing weather. Yes.

c. In his letter, Waldo told how grateful he was for the loan.

Yes he was very thankful to have such friend maybe.

Next word is cautious, cautious. Cautious means very careful never taking chances.

a. Be cautious when you choose your opponent. opponent.

We studied this word in previous lessons.

If you can remember opponent means a rival or a person that you compete against. Easier opponents.

c. Good authors are cautious not to exaggerate when they are right.

Exactly the essential word here is exaggerate.

Which means to make something bigger than it is. to magnify something.

c. If the rain is failing in actually torrents, it is best to drive cautiously.

Torrent is essential word in this sentence which means flawed. yes flawed.

Confident is the last word of this lesson.

Confident means firm firmly believing or certain or sure. We are completely sure about something. you are completely confident.

I think this boy is not confident he wants to jump into the water dive

a. judge Emery was confident he could solve the conflict.

Can you remember the meaning of conflict?

Conflict is a debate is an angry debate between two sides.

b. When he lifted the burden, Scotty was confident he could carry it.

So the essential word here is burden which means something that you have to carry. Something that you have to carry or a load.

c. Annette was confident she would do well as nurse.

Yes she was completely sure about this.

So confident means to be completely sure about something.

So these are 12 essential words that we have actually practiced and we finished practicing them.

We’re going to use these words in one great story.

I suggest you to come back and review these words and do not forget to make examples with these essential words actally making examples is one of the best ways to keep them in your mind for a very long time.
