Lesson 12

Hello everybody. Welcome to lesson number 12 of five four absolutely essential words in this lesson.

As always we will learn twelve essential words and we will use them in different examples to make things very clear for you.

You just need to pay attention.

You just need to understand the right pronunciation.

Are you ready?

Let’s get started.

So the first part of this lesson is ignite, ignite.

As you can see in the picture there is ignition.

Ignition is a noun of ignite. Ignite here is a verb. So ignite means to set something on fire. To set on fire.

Let’s use this word in different examples.

a. Spark plugs ignite in an automobile engine. Spark plugs ignite in an automobile engine.

b. One match can ignite an entire forest.

This is a very nice fact about actually those people who go to different jungles and forests and they actually use matches.

So you have to pay attention that one match can ignite an entire forest and it can be a very big tragedy.

c. Careless remark helped to ignite the conflict between brothers and the sisters.

The essential word in this sentence is conflict.

Can you remember the meaning of conflict?

Conflict means actually a discussion or an opposition between two persons

Essential word number two is abolish. Yes abolish. Abolish means to do away with completely or put an end to something

When he abolish something, he put an end to something.

So let me give you some examples.

Let’s use this word in different examples to understand it more.

a. The death penalty has recently been abolished in our state.

OK, the essential word here is recently which means not long time ago.

The next example:

b. we abolish numerous laws that didn’t serve any purpose in this decade.

Yes we abolished we put an end to numerous which means many several laws that didn’t serve any purpose in this decade.

Decade is an essential word of this actually sentence which means ten years.

I think we studied this word in the previous lesson. Decade.

The next word next sentence.

c. My school has abolished final exams altogether.

I think that’s good for the students because the school has decided to put an end to the final exams altogether. Abolish very nice and essential word.

Word number three is Urban, Urban. Urban is the opposite and is the antonym of actually rural, rural.

So urban means something of or having to do with cities or towns something that is related to towns or cities. Urban.

Let’s use this word in different examples.

a. Many businesses open offices in urban areas. Which means in the cities. In urban areas.

b. I plan to exchange my urban location for a rural one.

Rural, rural here is exactly the opposite and the antonym of urban.

So rural is something related to village and the countries. But urban is something related to cities and towns.

c. Only a small minority of the people of the United States live far from any urban area.

So can you tell me the meaning of these essential words?

Minority, minority we study this word in previous lesson.

Minority means less than half. Less than half. Urban.

Let’s understand the next essential word which is population.

I think this is a very common word and most of you guys know the meaning of this word.

You can see in this picture. Can you guess where these place is?

Yes this is India and I think the population of India is more than other countries, many countries.

So population means the people of a city or country.

So when you speak about the people of a city or country we can use the word population.

a. China has the largest population of any country.

Yes China has the largest population.

That’s a great.

b. the population of the world has increased in every decade. decade as an essential word in this sentence means ten years.

If you can remember this word, we studied this word in previous lesson.

c. After the recent floods, the population of Honduras was reduced by ten thousands.

I guess many people died and many people disappeared after the flood.

Do you know actually what’s the meaning of recent?

As I told you before recent means not long time ago. Recent. Population.

The next word is Frank, Frank.

I think this guy in this picture is very frank which means free in expressing one’s real thoughts, opinions, or feelings; not hiding what is in one’s mind.

So Frank means honest. Person who doesn’t want to hide anything in his mind is a person who speaks very openly and that’s Frank.

Frank is a very common American name too.

But let’s use this word in different examples to understand more.

a. Never underestimate the value of being frank with one another.

Never underestimate. Underestimate is an essential word here which means to set low value to undervalue something. that’s right.

b. Eertha thought was completely frank when she told her friend about the sale.

Now she was completely honest.

c. People liked Duffy because they knew he would be frank with them. Because they knew he would be very honest with them.

He would speak very openly with them.

Frank. What about your guys? Do you think you are Frank with your friends?

Sometimes it’s bad to be frank.

But most of the time it’s great to be frank with people because they can trust you most of the time.

The next word is pollute, pollute.

This picture shows the meaning of pollute.

There is a company that is polluting the air. Pollute is a verb and the noun is pollution.

So pollute means to make dirty, to make something dirty.

a. The Atlantic Ocean is in danger of becoming polluted.

b. There is much evidence to show that the air we breathe is polluted. Yes so the essential word here is actually evidence.

Can you remember the meaning of evidence? Evidence means actually facts or information indicating the beliefs or actually something is valid or true.

That’s a meaning of evidence and we studied this for it in previous lessons.

c. It is claimed that soap powders pollute the water.

Yes exactly. It pollutes the water.

The next word is reveal, reveal. Reveal means to me to make known, make known to make something known.

a. Napoleon agreed to reveal the information to the French population.

So Napoleon agreed to make known to actually show the information to the French people.

Population as you can remember means that people of one country or one city. reveal.

b. The evidence was revealed only after hours of questioning.

c. the auto company revealed reluctantly that there were defects in their new models.

So the auto company revealed show to reluctantly which means unwillingly.

This is an essential word that there were defects.

Can you remember the meaning of defects?

Yes, defects means errors and mistakes.

The next word is prohibit, prohibit. Prohibit means.

Can you remember? Prohibit means forbid by law or authority.

So prohibit something that is forbid by law or authority.

a. Elvin’s manager prohibited him from appearing on television.

Yes prohibited means banned or forbid something.

b. Many homeowners prohibit others from walking on their property.

c. The law prohibits the use of guns to settle a conflict. To end the conflict.

The essential word here is conflict which means disagreement and we study this actually word in previous lessons.

OK. The next word is urgent, urgent. Urgent means demanding immediate action or attention or when we speak about something that is important we say that is urgent.

So urgent is adjective here.

Let’s use it in different examples.

a. An urgent telephone call was made to the company’s treasurer.

b. The principal called an urgent meeting to solve the school numerous problems.

That’s correct. And actually the essential word here is numerous.

Can you remember the meeting of numerous? We studied and we learned and I taught this word in previous lessons.

So numerous problems means many many problems or several problems.

c. When he heard their urgent cry for help, the lifeguard didn’t hesitate.

Hesitate, hesitate means to act وactually to fail to act very quickly. When you fail to act very quickly you hesitate. And that’s a negative point. Urgent, urgent.

Adequate, adequate. adequate means as much as is needed.

Fully sufficient when you speak about something that is fully sufficient and we don’t need anything girls we say that’s adequate, adequate.

a. Rover was given an adequate amount of food to last him the whole day.

Yes fully sufficient.

b. A bedroom kitchen and bath were adequate shelter for his living needs.

c. Carlos was adequate at his job but he wasn’t great.

Yes he was adequate.

The next essential word is decrease. Very nice words very common words very important words.

We use these words in different actually newspapers and different text decrees means to make or become less.

Actually the opposite and the antonym of decrease is increase.

Increase means to go up and decrease means to come down, reduce.

a. As he kept spending money, the amount he had saved decreased.

Yes became less. It decreased.

b. In order to improve business, the store owner decreased his prices.

Yes it decreased his prices. He decided to make them less.

c. the landlord promised to decrease our rent.

That’s perfect. That’s a great landlord. Decrease the rent means to make it less. Very nice word.

Audible, audible. Audible means able to be heard. something that is audible.

This is the last word of this lesson. Audible. Something that you can hear.

a. From across the room, the teacher’s voice was barely audible. it was hardly audible and we couldn’t hear it.

b. After Len got his new hearing aid, my telephone calls became audible. So it was easy for you to hear them.

Commands from Ann’s drill surgeons were always easily audible. Yes.

They were always easily heard.

That’s it.

Oh these are twelve essential words of lesson number twelve.
