Lesson 10

Hello everybody.

How are you doing?

Welcome to lesson number ten a five for essential words.

In this lesson like always we are going to introduce twelve essential words and we will use all of these words in one interesting story.

We will give you lots of synonyms, lots of definitions.

And actually we’re going to learn some other words, some other essential words.

And we will review all of these words that we have learned before in different lessons.

So it will be easier for you to remember them.

So guys let’s start with the first word. Are you ready? Let’s get started.

Word number one is Excel, Excel. Excel means to be better than to do better.

When you do be better than other people you excel them.

But let me give you some examples.

a. Because he was so small, Larry could not excel in sports. She couldn’t do better in sports.

b. At least Hannah had the security of knowing that she excelled in swimming.

c. Clarence Darrow wanted to become a prominent lawyer, but he fell that he must first excel in this study of history.

There is an essential word here and that is prominent.

Can you remember the meaning of prominent?

Yes, prominent means actually a very important person. Prominent. So excel here means to do better than or be better than. Very nice word.

Word number two is feminine, feminine. As you can see in this picture we can see lots of feminine stuff.

So feminine means something related to women or something of women or girls and that’s adjective.

Let me give you some examples and understand this words in different context.

a.When my sister wants to look feminine she changes from dungarees into a dress.

b. Aunt Sarah can always be counted on to give the feminine viewpoints.

c. My brother is ashamed to cry at a sad movie because people might think he is behaving in a feminine manner.

behavior ,Yes that’s a feminine behavior.

So that’s an essential word.

Word number two five of four absolutely essential words.

The next word is mount. Mount which means to get up on or to climb, Mount.

You must know that Mount is a verb of mountain. Mountain. Mount here is a verb.

a. Congressman Jones mounted the platform to make his speech. So he got up on the platform to make his speech.

b. The watchman mounted the tower to see if there were any people in the vicinity.

Can you guys remember the meaning of vicinity? We studied this word in the previous lesson I guess.

So vicinity means the neighborhoods, neighborhoods.

c. My sister couldn’t mount the horse so they gave her a pony instead.

Yes. She couldn’t get on the horse. She couldn’t mounts the horse.

So as you can see we don’t use any other prepositions for this verb mount. Very nice word

The next word is compete.

So as you can see in this picture there swimmers is trying to compete against other swimmers.

So compete means try hard to get something wanted by others or to be the rival, rival. compete.

And the noun is competition.

But here we are trying to understand the verb. compete.

Let’s understand it in different examples.

a. The former champion was challenged to compete for the tennis title.

The essential word in this sentence is challenge which means to call for a fight. To call somebody for a fight.

b. The runner was reluctant to compete in front of his parents for the first time.

Yes he was reluctant and essential words reluctant which means unwilling, unwilling.

c. When the amateur became a pro He had to compete against better man.

Perfect example.

The essential word here is amateur which means inexperienced. A person who is not completely experienced. Compete, compete. And the noun is competition.

The next word is dread, dread. Dread means Look forward to with fear; Fear greatly or causing great fear. So dread.

Many are greatly afraid of something you can use the word dread and it has no preposition.

Let me give you some examples.

a. The poor student dreaded going to this school each morning.

I have to tell you this point that most of the time we use the verb ing after dread. We use a gerund.

b. He had a dread feeling about the challenge he was about to face seat.

c. I dread going into that deserted house. I’m afraid of going into that deserted house. Yes that’s a very nice word. dread.

The next essential word is masculine.

Masculine is the opposite of actually feminine. Masculine is something that is related to men something of men or male.

As you can see in this picture the guy has masculine behaviors and masculine look.

But let me give you some examples.

a. The boy became more masculine as he got older.

That’s right.

b. It is undeniable that his beard makes him look masculine.

So masculine. Here is an adjective. Yes. So the essential word in this sentences are undeniable. Which means on questionable when there is no doubt about something we say it is undeniable. It is totally certain.

c. The girls liked Jerry because of his masculine ways.

Yes most of the girls like actually boys with masculine behaviors.

Yes that’s a fact.

Next essential word is menace. Menace, menace. Menace means threats. Threats.

a. lrv’s lack of respect made him a menace to his parents. Lack essential word here is lack which means without something.

b. The torrents of rain were a menace to their farmer’s crops.

Yes. The essential word here is torrents which means flood. Flood.

c. Sergeant Foy’s raw language was an obvious menace to their reputation of the entire police department.

And the essential word here we can find is obvious. Which means can you remember?

We started this in previous lessons. That means very clear. Obvious. something that is very clear.

Tendency, tendency. Tendency means leaning; movement in the certain direction, tendency.

There is another actually synonym for this and that is inclination or interest. tendency.

a. My algebra teacher has a tendency to forget the student’s names. Unfortunately.

b. His tendency was to work hard in the morning and then to take it easy in the afternoon.

c. The tendency in all human beings is to try to survive.

Yes I think all human beings have this tendency and the essential word here is survive. Survive which means to live longer them. Very nice word tendency.

The next essential word is underestimate, underestimate. Underestimate means to set too low or value, amount or rate. to set too low a value amount or rate, underestimate.

So the actual word is estimate and actually underestimate makes it negative.

We can use other synonyms like undervalue to, set low value for something.

a. I admit that I underestimated the power in the bulky fighter’s frame.

Yes the essential word here is bulky which means massive something that is huge and very large and big.

b. undoubtedly the boss underestimated his employee’s ability to work hard.

Yes essential word here is undoubtedly which means certainly, certainly the boss underestimated his employees

c. The value of our house was underestimated by at least two thousand dollars.

Yes it was underestimated. It was undervalued. Very nice words underestimate.

The next essential word is victorious.

You can see the girl in this picture is victorious which means having won a victory or conquering, victorious.

A person who is the winner of a match competition or something.

Let’s use these words in different context.

a. Playing in New Jersey, the Jets were victorious two years in a row. They were winner. Two years in a row, two years after another one.

b. Terry faced the challenge with the bad altitude attitude excuse me with a bad attitude that he could not be victorious.

So actually Terry face the challenge. So can you remember the meaning of challenge?

Yes challenge means to call for a fight or here actually it has different context it means difficulty.

c. Our girls’ volleyball squad was victorious over a taller team. victorious.

Can you tell me the noun of this word? The noun is victory and the adjective is victorious.

The next essential word is numerous, numerous. As you can see in this picture there are many many trees.

So numerous means very many or several, several.

a. Critics review numerous movies every week.

b. Dr. Fisher had resisted accepting money from the poor woman on numerous hours calls.

Resist. Can you tell me the meaning of Resist? Means to act again somebody.

c. The debater used numerous documents to back up his statements. That’s right the essential word here is

Debate which means discussion. So debater is a person who discusses.

And there is another word documents which means actually written files or handwritten files. Numerous very nice word.

And the last word of this lesson is flexible. You can see this girl she is very flexible which means easily bends or willing to yield.

Flexible. And the noun of this word is flexibility, flexibility.

a. The toy was flexible, and the baby could bend it easily. Flexible.

b. Remaining flexible, Nick listened to arguments from both sides.

b. a mouth’s flexible body allows it to squeeze through narrow openings. flexible.
