A. Listen to these people responding to invitations. Complete the chart. Which event sounds the most interesting?

Martin:

Hey, Martin. Do you want to go to a concert with me next week?

Oh. Well, maybe. Who’s playing?

It’s local band- Burnt Fingers. Have you heard of them?

No. What kind of music is it?

Actually, I’m not really sure. It’s just that I got some free tickets. My friend Anna is going, too. We’re going to meet after work.

Anna’s going to go? Huh. OK, well, yeah, that’d be great. So, when is it?

It’s on Monday at seven.

Monday? Oh, no. I have a meeting on Monday with my boss. We probably won’t finish until seven or so.

Oh, that’s too bad. I know Anna would like to see you, too. Oh, well.

Well, wait. Maybe I’ll call my boss and ask her if we can change the day. Maybe we can meet on Tuesday.

OK, yeah. Find out and let me know.

Julia:

Hey, Julia. Do you want to go bowling with us on Friday night?

Friday night? Sure. What time?

Around ten.

Ten o’clock? That’s pretty late.

Yeah, but we don’t get out of class until nine. And then we’re going out for pizza. We’ll go bowling after that.

Well, I don’t know. My favorite movie is on TV this Friday. It starts at nine-thirty.

Oh, come on! You can always rent the movie and watch it another time.

Yeah, I guess. But you know what? I think I’ll pass this time. I’m pretty tired, and I don’t really want to be out so late. I’d rather just stay home and watch a movie.

OK. Well, maybe next time.

Rachel:

Do you have any plans for this weekend, Rachel?

Not really. Nothing special. How about you? What are you doing?

Actually, I’m going to go to a bookstore. One of my favorite authors will be there, and he’s going to read from his latest book.

Oh, that sounds like fun. Who is he?

Rick Davies. He’s a crime-fiction writer. His books are great.

Huh. I’ve never heard of him. But I don’t read a lot of crime novels.

So, anyway, would you like to go?

Oh, sure. When is it?

Sunday at three o’clock.

Oh, that’s too bad. I usually go to see my grandmother on Sunday afternoon.

Oh, well, that’s OK.
