Sports events

1) The last football match of the season in England is always the FA Cup Final (FA stands for Football Association). This takes place at Wembley Stadium in London in May. Every football team in the country joins the competition. The winners are usually one of the top teams, like Liverpool, Chelsea or Manchester United, but sometimes one of the smaller teams wins. The FA Cup is the oldest football competition in the world. The first FA Cup final was in 1872.

2) The Boat Race takes place in spring - usually in March. Two boats of eight rowers from Oxford University and Cambridge University race each other on the River Thames in London. The first race was in 1829.

3) Every year since 1981, thousands of runners have taken part in the London Marathon. The fastest runners complete the 26 miles (42 kilometres) in less than two and a half hours, but other people take several hours or even days to finish. The race takes place in April.

4) The Wimbledon Championships is the oldest and most famous tennis tournament in the world, so all the top tennis players are there. The first tournament was in 1877. And it’s the only big tournament that’s on grass. Wimbledon is in south­-west London. The tournament starts towards the end of June. and lasts for two weeks. Traditionally, people eat strawberries and cream at Wimbledon. Every year they eat over 30,000 kilograms of strawberries.
