Build Your English Confidence
Hello, I’m Emma from mmmEnglish and this video is a little different to my usual YouTube videos because it’s actually a video recording of a podcast interview that I did just a few days ago, with the guys from Real Life Global. Now, it was my first podcast interview so I was a little bit nervous!
But I hope you enjoy listening to us and hearing about some of the things we discuss. Ethan and Chad from real-life global are very cool guys! We had lots of fun together! They host their podcast so they can talk to lots of English teachers and English learners about studying English, about the best ways to do it lots of tips and advice but also, lots of practice with just general conversation.
So, it’s fantastic listening practice for you! In this episode, we talk a lot about building your confidence as an English speaker. And I gave some advice and some tips about how to get more of it - more CONFIDENCE, that is! I also created a worksheet that is just for listeners of the podcast.
So, if you listen until the end you’ll find out how to download it (and it’s completely free!!) But, you’ll need to watch the podcast recording to find out how to use it. Now, we spoke for quite a while actually, the podcast goes for almost an hour!
So, make sure that you’ve got a drink and some snacks and some time just to relax and enjoy listening to three native English speakers strategies to build your confidence as an English speaker. I hope you enjoy it!
Oh, you would life reliance on what’s going on later cinnamon check here from real-life English.
When we believe that listening to podcasts is a fun, natural, effective, or superpowered, or even way to learn English so download this podcast or this video podcast and listen to us while you’re stuck in traffic, walking the dog, having your lunch so right in the Crew always shoveling snow shoveling snow. Awesome.
So I join you today in the virtual studio with the first of all, Mr. V, himself Ethan how you doing man are yeah pretty well tell you okay since the show’s the snow shoveling and today we have a very special guest.
A fellow countrymen or countrymen of mine, Mike Jacoby from originally from Melbourne, right yeah oh yeah oh yeah that’s all yeah it’s awesome having you on our part cannot say a video podcast and Emily is from English okay anyway, like actually okay because I start making the cooking set.
Originally it was English and it’s got involved a little bit you know that so many different ways that you can say in English. I say like feeling and your so let’s let’s get down to what English still about.
You mentioned was cooking English but maybe to just get the podcast rolling, you could quickly summarize little bit about your channel about yourself what you’re doing in case of people haven’t heard of part of your channel your website for shy guys online site lessons that originally whereabouts cooking and I was kind I was teaching English in China find a way to make English more interesting and more fun, focusing on topic, which allows riches food and eating lots of other people do enjoy that.
Tay-Sachs was the original idea behind that channel developed a bit more and I had a lot of fun session video confidence in speaking the eyes and things like that my lessons are focused on actually speaking and actually having conversations in English teacher Ozzie English as well.
You tell people to develop their styling and you United writing other people other friends Australians who probably have a little bit more than I day so there’s lots of opportunity to practice the stallion accent and listening to state which is black.
Most of the challenge lies any programs on your on your dad would be interested in making the great content. You there quickly rope in use attempt to probe in some your friends to help you out.
So maybe explain what roping mean and what is about someone into something means that you try and convince them to do it or you get them to do it, even though they probably want to see trying both in that way and your friendship means that you are asking them to do a save the 40 like a cowboy is like his lawsuit with the video put show action to elicit your line right so you know it’s it’s right we should change kind of a little bit difficult to explain without being a little bit politically incorrect, but usually it is someone who maybe comes from the country or maybe a little bit less educated then then people live in cities and universities in that kind of thing are very casual and laid back and relaxed the monsters of Australian slang.
So I went that we probably use instead type redneck or something like that of the extreme version of the country hick redneck I think is a good a good time with web explain redneck many times on the sport customs are people in the states. Maybe like white trash or trailer trash like I offensively: someone what harsh you’re right, it’s not a compliment really say start Monday.
Some people might went with pride where that have that kind is roll or label time when you have a job. They have to do lots of different tasks you might have to be the accountant.
One day the accounts had on and then the next day your managing staff managerial had done and then unite the next day you might be doing a presentation like superpowered manager on your party hat below the Bogan’s have that party had on all the times for the business of the front party at the back of my letter style that some common among bug and my trash right just spotted a few moments since coming back to straight to the else does.
A cultural experience. Never thought about going the mother yourself. I did have one when I was about 2 1/2 and three is out so we could put on the show notes page that you might be getting any of them.
Excellent loss comments about them… And then we can the real stuff that a female mullets is called bullet frolicked which is like a front so it would be like long in the front and shorten the back.
Okay, let’s let’s move on to some real English learning powerful stuff. We do take advantage the embassy today can like pick your brain a little bit because you mentioned you started off with cooking English and then now it seems that you can transition in your focus a lot on building confidence. Helping learners. I guess feel more confident when their speaking summit that was very were also very interested in doing. Like from our like language learning experiences.
In light work would lots of students from all over the world would you notice that confidence is one of the biggest barriers to actually just grabbing the bull by the horns known actually just speaking and not feeling scared to know so would you like to maybe just tells little bit about your your your teaching methodology will you do with students how you build confidence and maybe why that’s really important.
Like 20 questions in one sink, confident that you need to to to learn English online and in recent years, like using phenomenon where you are actually in control of the online you can choose teacher is all of the teachers can choose the one that what you can choose their styling and jollity methodology that works for you can choose where you study how you study things create so much more opportunity for success when learning a language.
I think that that provide so much opportunity that students really need the students that gravitate towards me and more of a capillary tube to line intent to try and what I offer my students is a place where this opportunity to practice it to use what they already had to use that as a to grow from because one of the things that I hear so often from from all of my students. I’m sure that you guys here.
This is well over time that how can I improve my improvement but can I do and is always about putting into practice, it’s not about memorizing or learning or taking one morning finishing using and become comfortable with what you got building through real conversation and we’ll practice some kind of spikes that I feel with English, so I gave those opportunities to students by practicing inquiry by starting to spot to create spaces online in particular that a safe type of practice unite all my love is a big space will say sign many nations and opportunities to find groups of people or teachers who are really interested in similar goals and objectives to you so I think that that’s kind of where English tries to fill some of those opportunities for students to practice so you can imagine there that a lot of people ask about grammar.
So for you. What role would you say that grammar should play in people’s learning English. So I think the opinion that that once students reach the intermediate level of English they understanding, ability to communicate using it might not be well it’s not hundred percent accurate but you can communicate your message and what does it all for you, and you can stop speaking to people having conversations meeting people talking about new topics and through the Trinity unite your listening skills building your vocabulary aligning you what you trying new words you’re pulling words that are somewhere in the back of your head to the front again and kind of reading some of the things that you got back in school and say when it comes to grammar and vocabulary.
I’m on a big supporter of once you reach that intermediate level where communication is possible, still awkward and uncomfortable, but it’s possible that the point where going into practice unite is what’s going to really teaching to take your English to the next level when you hit that. I guess like when you first a little grammar likely to get overloaded with grammar at the beginning it can be like a little overwhelming because of similar rules and restrictions.
I think if you just have that sick documents safe ground when you say safe. In that case, mean everyone’s just everyone’s there to help you out. No one’s really kinda like no one’s really what if you say something wrong to you to unite what the space to create online is a space where the stakes are okay in fact there where necessary, and actually the really exciting part about learning a language when you space you’re in a live conversation and where it’s going or what can happen next.
So everything is a let you know you you’re watching you looking for any clues they can help you to be success when tempted to say the next space in the first instance is just the optimum space aligning the best possible space debate. It’s not like sitting back cruising watching YouTube videos and just unite with me weds that strict on space. Discomfort is what really love your your senses and let to take on new information and try anything that safe place is really important for that because you so easy to just be cut down by a lack of confidence.
Confidence is a sci-fi talking a lot. That confidence just like KN said really strange thing because sometimes you have heaps of it. So much of it at the time, in a split second, you can lose it completely mental kindness game to convince herself or to bring yourself back into a place of of confidence and that option when you lose confidence when you realize that you make a mistake is to just let go and kind of find a way to get away from that situation difficult thing is to to keep going to accept.
I think that when you’re when you’re talking about mistakes and learning from them on. This is a really important part of taking your English to the next level. It’s about identifying areas that your not getting things right and maybe call it site conversation with someone say something that you what you don’t understand the Trinity to find out what it is, my meant context and understand.
You’ve also got an opportunity to ask for more information if you need if you’re not being clear what you’re saying is it’s not clear, then someone else is going to ask you to clarify your going tonight that you need to find a better way to explain this idea different things that are happening and can come out of stakes in conversations.
That’s really just there. We just said I just covered a lot of different areas but they’re all kind of like linked in some ways and in many ways, which is also like a lot of the stuff we would talk about one thing that you said that which one of many was this whole idea about when you’re when you put into that situation. Wait, I guess maybe kind of we use the term a lot to get out of your comfort zone. You know when you’re out of that comfort zone in your you’re really struggling to put phrases together.
It’s interesting you sit it seems like your your or your senses, thoughts like focus little bit more to get into this kind of like survival mode. You know it’s a Muslim the firefly. That’s it. And you get insect is flow. I realize I had this a lot when I was present what I’m up’s first move to Brazil at the end of the day or maybe not even at the end of the dates was laid off but it all just like exhausted because I felt like my brain was is like processing old information like totally different.
It is, like how you go to the gym like work your butt is at work in your mind you know when you get likely tired to like your some thoughts from like making so many different sounds that you’re not used to making is like having a conversation hours of conversation starts to take a toll on your your or muscles.Quite a few students.
We actually do training like for Joe are you cheeks everything because often when speaking a different language. When you state actually using completely different parts of your mouth. Your tongue that you wouldn’t normally use showing that we could link to my private lessons and flattering one that the photos with the mullet that yeah will numbers think about mullet’s.
Oh what else to say about that whole thing about folks and really harder than getting quite tired. I think that’s full of guess the advice of give his full into the trap because sometimes you’re just speaking like really well and my English is perfect right now but in like an hour later you dislike you can’t see anything.
I think it’s because you’re slowly fatiguing yourself and it starts to get harder and harder, but I think if you go through the zone where you like you said to take it up a level I think was the term used its coupon to come down a little bit stupid just to just chill out and not worry so much about this comment down downtimes we you feel like it’s really hot talk, you know, yeah and what you said about confidence in about your classes. How do how do you organize that I made you have students converse with other students, or are you conversing with them the whole time. How does that.
How does that flow kind of work with with their practicing their speaking a few different courses that I say that I’ll talk about now is that conversation confidence kind. Of course, until XMI’s relevant when he gripped training course say the first thing is that everyone is connected, or comes together through Facebook and say anyone stops and students from all over the world. We connect together in the Facebook rate and one of the fast tasks that that I get students to do is to make a short video of themselves and paste it into the great to share it with everyone.
This is often a really challenging thing today when I started making videos and I know that you guys when I first started making videos and placing them online. It was one of the scariest things I’ve ever done in my life. I like putting yourself out there when you’re not used to it and unite. Suddenly anyone can see it and got nowhere to hide. This idea of creating your online video to introduce yourself.
It breaks down the fast role of bricks on the wall like it just introduces you to the other people in the grade you get to meet a few of the other people but not as confronting as unite being put in front of each other on a screen and having to talk to each other. You’re just running a little bit more about the past.
You listen to what my voice sounds like you can see what they look like here a bit about interesting and I said that’s the first step in a progressively that a little bit more and a little bit more and it will get to the point where my students will be speaking together and then we have great conversations with all of us come together one-on-one conversations with native speakers as well.
So it’s like a progression to the cost without a lot of confident speaking English. I should say that the courses designed for students who had an intermediate kind of levels that they have taken pool sentences together and express themselves. But that confidence is what’s holding them back from taking themselves to the next level coming I guess that’s a perfect point whether kind of the slowly growing older, grammar, and more. The structural stuff when they hit that stage is the best way to discover bloated really really get a lot better with through the practice said the biggest hurdle. I guess because at that point when you had told you. You have a choice.
You can either take the leap into a space that you feel a bit uncomfortable and you have to start using your English speaking with people and practicing that way I can kind of choose to not date that I guess where anyone wants to be and what I like to do is just try and help people that push that heddle exposing yourself and kind of challenging yourself that way means that you got the opportunity to prove to yourself that you can.
I think you guys do on a couple of usually hot like a quite staying at the start of your past so I always always think about when I’m talking to my students by Vanguard that the hottest guy and say he says if you hear a voice within you say you can’t paint then by all means voice will be silenced and I think that it is the fate perfect way to kind of get that have heddle challenge where the easy option is to say on.
I can’t do it or I say Bob or my granite say that I can’t be too embarrassing and uncomfortable. Is it going to feel just trying instantly is going to prove to yourself that you can do it any of that the problems that you need to do to fix the next time you need to make the next time. How is a lot easier.
Yes, like I think if you don’t do that if you don’t like pasta is like a threshold threshold the right word is like if you if you don’t get to that. You just be stagnant. You just you don’t really grow to think you need it. You need to look for those hurdles looks those pain points is all I do know if I can do that in the that’s where you should be going. That’s more like it. Like your guiding star you know if you before those those those things that make you feel comfortable make you feel less confident.
That’s probably assigned. That’s probably what you should be doing, but is pretty cool prove anything in life are yeah conversation about confidence is not specific to English at all varying degrees. We we all have confidence issues for the three of us usually speaking English is not really a challenge but other things in life when you have to do a huge presentation at University Art. You know what call or something like that way.
You have to put yourself in a position where you feel uncomfortable and is a risk that you might not be able to do it but you do everything that you can to succeed and to do it well and I think unite all of these lessons that were talking about now can be applied across life excellent so that you have anymore questions Ethan just since were talking about confidence and maybe some people are listening how the classes are considering getting classes that don’t have class for whatever reason.
What are things that you can do anyway outside of class to increase their confidence like you have any habits or routines that you suggest people take on this topic on probably three 343 things that I like to set as talk about probably more tips and ways I guess. Good habit to get into the first one is to surround yourself with the right kind of people on the second one is about preparation and the third one is about small wings or setting goals that are really Achievable and being kind to yourself, and so will go through each of them in a little bit of detox. They take a bit of explaining.
The first one is you know when I talk about surrounding yourself with the right kind of people it’s and this is another life lesson just about English, but it applies to English.
If you surround yourself with people who encourage you to support you, motivate you and to inspire you to to do the things that you are trying to do, then your chances of succeeding increased tenfold like, or that the chances of you succeeding are so much higher because if you’re around people who are in are proactive in their there also searching for the same goals are trying to achieve the same same things unite you can motivated motivate each other and inspire each other to keep going you.
You make each other accountable as well so unite if you if you think about when you stop an English course you stop at the same level as someone but your your friendly apartment is quite diligent and they working you know, doing a lot of homework or work outside of the classroom to keep improving and you notice that they are improving faster than you, then you probably gonna try and keep up with them.
Given what Hada to keep up with them and surrounding yourself with those type of people is is part of the strategy to improve, you know you’re the sum of the five closest people to you, and I think that that’s really true in the way that you learn English as well.
So that’s and that’s part of what I sort of look into it or what I focus on with him English providing the space for those people to connect and if you think about United different English nations online.
You can find almost anything it some. It is seen others groups of people who are high level advanced English learners who are professionals in trying to seek really great job opportunities and there also unite people who are interested in cooking or this people who have English book clubs and things like that.
Connecting yourself with the with the type of personal the group of people that has similar interests similar names and similar goals as you is going to motivate you to keep to keep studying and to keep trying to keep practicing.
Sorry so I have a group of my iron but for four women. Actually it’s a Facebook group that is for women learning English and it’s kind of a unique set of space because when it comes to confidence. Women have kind of different confidence issues when they speaking English to men and say unite.
That’s kind of a little mage space that I working and unite those opportunities to kinda connect in those groups. So my grip is full of women who who are on United very nervous about meeting people online and feeling uncomfortable and unite through through practice activities and sound ways to connect with each other.
They build their confidence together and I think that’s a really important thing for people who lack confidence speaking English, finding groups like that is really can help you to to level up to know what you got this about the yeah aspect of I think it’s great to Scripture giving them a specific area what it’s like just a little extra edge of feeling comfortable because there are unfortunately a little crazy people.
Mine should radically exactly why I started that group we have to go into detail about that but you know that’s the fact. The fact is, is also united that in certain cultures and you know even religions unite. It’s not always okay for for mixed kind of groups and things like that. So this lots of different little nations that it feels.
I think there are so many great psychics out there and and unite. We’ll we’ll have our incentive following. I guess of a particular people that are attracted to us because of that, I think that that finding those nations is a really key pot of some of improving your English is the second one that I had was to him that the second kind of tape that I had is about preparation and I think that preparing for conversations is one of the best things that you can do to boost confidence that is not to unite think about every line in the conversation, you can come possibly anticipate how the conversation is going to go but you can use the context of the conversation to really help you to think about what’s going to happen.
What could possibly be spiking about, you know where you who you talking to what’s happening around you when you visit all of these things, unite, help you to think about possible topics. Maybe some set vocabulary that you might need to brush up on that kind of thing just preparing in that way gives you a little bit of support and a bit of backup I guess to make you feel a bit more confidence, rather than just walking into a conversation going to sign it… What this is all about, but unite.
It’s they really set of simple strategies, but being aware of them of them and being on proactive about them is really going to help take the pressure off. I guess it’s a good thing. For example, what you do with your close group very Facebook when you get them to record video for some introduce themselves and just talk a little bit because that’s something you do all the time.
You always introduce yourself. So that part of your English generally develops much quicker than present – talking about what you did last weekend was the second development I just like having these little semi like a loosely written scripts starts will come from talk about stuff because you 40 kind of but most of the information ready to go to your tone exactly and it’s also like lots of people have to use English primarily in a work context or maybe they speaking to customers and the kind of thing.
So focusing you know on those particular situations without having to use English most is a huge part of the pace of the puzzle. I guess my point learning a whole bunch of vocabulary about going to the beach. If you’re speaking to a customer about import importing shoes from Siberia. All are irrelevant, but that you know you really think about that context and you kind of understand the possibilities around context and what with that and I think build on go from there.
You know you can live beach vocabulary later when it’s relevant, but unite for now focus your energy on getting that pot right then build nice okay so preparation you say that one is about being really action oriented and you know I touched on this before about United. One thing is to kind of sit back and watch whole bunch of YouTube videos and unite try and absorb English.
That way, but being really proactive and taking action takes for a lot of people who don’t naturally have that confidence so that ability to describe you know I’m just gonna try it. It takes a bit of planning and a bit of preparation but also you G yourself up like talk yourself up like that yourself, talk yourself into it to the point where you sugar for my life. No yourself. Take a deep breath in and just do it.
If you unite think about it too long, you end up talking yourself out of it right you know you stand there is always that amount of time that passes, that is too long and you miss the opportunity and you. It’s quite hard to kind of push yourself back into that energy space but a good way to kind of be action oriented and to focus on things that you can do is to have a small wing strategy.
So that’s unite this idea of becoming fluent in English or becoming improving unite with your IL-6 and you want to get to IL site that’s a that’s a year-long two year long. Three long three year long plan but unite with God every day. You know you’re trying to sort of move towards this goal. Any field goal is only to reach that number right then unite. It’s a long road and there’s not a lot of comfortable spots to stop on the side of that right and just relaxing, taking the view, it’s a long hard right, exactly.
But if you you change your perspective on that a little bit and you you stop thinking about a small wing strategy. What can you do today or tomorrow or the next day or next week, it becomes easy to see your progress and I think that that’s one of the things that’s really important confidence is to be out of the prove to yourself that you are making progress doing things and trying new things.
So what I usually give to my students and down and what I actually prepared for it for your listeners as well is a kind of a weekly plan that can help to strategize what to think of a strategy about your small wings for the week and it could be you nice things like on Tuesday I’m going to go to Starbucks order Michael feet in English.
I’m not can I use my native language. I’m getting specifically to Starbucks and I’m going to speak in English. I’ve never done it before, but I’m just going to set that goal for myself and you do it at the end of the week you know if you have a couple of these goals, you know, it might be introduce yourself to a new online group and or or even make a video of yourself and posted into a group that you already feel comfortable in little things like that that you can keep track of and see that you may progress.
One of my favorite things to do is to to make sure that my students always reward themselves for that because it’s too easy to just kind of push everything to the side and say that’s done, but if you’ve got thing like you know like ride or going out with friends to celebrate or something like that unite at the end of the week or at the end of the month it some night. It helps to motivate you and to encourage you to keep improving the golden heard of something similar to this like people were trying to start a routine.
For example, running like giving themselves a reward. After doing the wrong like a little something so slight. If you usually smaller to reserve yourself some sort of treat or some sort of like little satisfaction that you have that you can eat after that.
But it’s kind of it. Actually there something in your brain that are programmed you to associate those two. So then eventually you don’t need the chocolate or the ward or whatever and you’re just like motivated to do that thing talk about language divided by food any one glossary also.
So just about the topic of treating yourselves celebrated the skill even better. If you have those five people will work out with doing it with you. Much of the start, it’s better to have people got hold you accountable support you have similar goals as you so you also bring together makes it even more powerful.whole celebrate this small women’s right. Yeah, that great man telling me is is so good for her for keeping you focused on the goal and you are keeping you moving forward. Because if you’re doing it on your mind and you you know you got this goal that in your head set.
It’s so easy to just unite if you don’t actually achieve it, or you too busy or something happens and you get distracted it’s way too easy when it’s just in your head to say anything about it, not mention it to anyone but his friends or this group of people who assign with your laser video or did you do it like to do.
You know, you kind of feel a bit like there. I wish that I didn’t now it’s all about kind of nation that helps to keep pushing towards that goal, other side of the just going back to the reward of it. If you actually learning.
Maybe the group or you’re with other people are speaking with you constantly when you learning the language on your own, maybe you don’t see yourself improving but other people what you say like your English is much better this week.
Your blog will really like to start working so you… Sense of improvement like we were talking about earlier, the maybe if you learning on your own. It’s going to feel more like you’re an uphill battle.
Yeah title yeah it is quite common for him. Unite Western father now sells and we have such high expectations for ourselves that we often don’t see that we refuse to see it. I know you guys must have the same thing but I just get constant emails from some students who are learning English saying you know my vocabulary so bad in my grandma so bad then unite, we have this tendency to to to tell ourselves these negative things which I’m also not true or you know the not as bad as we make them out today and I think that unite having other people around you really help you to see cost some of those kind of negative thoughts and negative aspects that you know it’s difficult to to to work through on your and sometimes it’s very true.
I just sit this out. For example, working in a team like in a study and it seems the kind of thing that’s gonna make you stay up an extra hour see Dr. Dupuis publishers out tomorrow. Yeah, the expectation is that official talk about expectation would have to wrap this port cost up because I have a some friends waiting for me to go kayaking on expecting your breakfast of a crumpets and Vegemite supported all of those loosing them actual come home for Christmas, I misread you in the US, the pork also your your house right yeah I am I am old Straley I’m in Melbourne I the other side’s she’s a Scotia Westside decided know what to little gold bloods and Crips is not like America.
That’s what I thought the website side done on the red Benedetto bosons were imparted video Westside decided I gotten English like all. Just listening to the podcast you really need to watch the video just to talk to Emma you were.
You mentioned this, but if you want to give a little bit more detail. You have a special gift to the people were watching or listening help a worksheet that they can download, so it helps them to put a couple of the strategies that I talk about today into action so I’m sure you guys can link to it under the on your webpage, but I’ll give you my webpage as well. It’s English/real life English and how many times does have three 3M’s 3M three in so.com/real life English.
I was not actually the first that I was also like your your name if you were to say like your name, really, my English yeah there’s lots of like coincidental kind of things going on that you can make 3M’s working lots of different context that helps.
I just for short people sometimes call Emma M. Estrella those others that were getting very frustrated by this run English and stored heaps of his right yeah yeah only thing that keeps good pronounced types yet Queensland or Queensland.
Maybe I do know I’ll see if I can find one 40 I don’t see the and also if you just listening on the website as well, that was linked English/life English or this port because it will show notes for this episode will be a real life global/Emma English-MO sport EMM a EN GLI SH to Emma thank you so much for joining us on this port custody was great having another string will have one a straight in on the port cost for the first female Street house ever notes for joining us and I said no I do check out the videos on YouTube with you like cooking or you’re interested in confidence in English it’s really great stuff so just to finish up as well.
