The Hon. Charles: Oh hello, Lucy. I say, isn’t this awful about Mother’s diamonds?

Lucy: Yes, terrible, Charles!

You know, I saw Sir Montague go up to his bedroom at about 6.30. You don’t think he took them, do you?

C: Oh, I don’t think so! He usually dresses for dinner about then. Of course, I was in the billiard room, doing some practice, so I didn’t see where anyone was. Where were you, by the way?

L: Little me? Oh, I was in the music room all the rime. Didn’t you hear me on the piano? And the housekeeper - er, what’s her name? Mrs Forbes - was in the dining room. Probably making sure everything was in place for dinner.

No sign of the butler, though.

C: Morgan? Oh, I know where he was. Mother told me he was in her room for at least half an hour between 6 and 7. They were discussing which wines to have for dinner in the next few days.

L: Ah. And what about Derek? Isn’t he gorgeous! Where was he all this time? I heard him go upstairs. I thought perhaps he wanted to talk to your mother.

C: He looked in on me in the billiard room, and mentioned he was going to his room to write a letter.

[Ah] Of course, his room’s right next door to Mother’s! [Oh]
