متن انگلیسی درس

Narrator: I’ll be there for you.

To be there for somebody,  means to make yourself available and willing (ready) to help them when they need it.

Example:

I have the best friends.

I’ve been through some tough times, and they’ve always been there for me.

Subtitles Available:

  1. Hang in there.

  2. Stay strong.

  3. I’m behind you 100%.

  4. The sky’s the limit.

  5. Every cloud has its silver lining.

Write an example with one of these expressions!

Music:

  • your job’s a joke, you’re broke

Your love life’s D.O.A.

Narrator:

To be a joke ;

Normally, a joke is a funny story or trick;

that is said or done in order to make people laugh.

Example:

He told a joke about a farmer and a lawyer that was super funny.

However, more informally, we can say that something or somebody is a joke when we mean that it is considered to be so bad or worthless (without value) that it is ridiculous.

Our new math teacher’s a joke- he can’t even control the class.

The test was a joke.

Everyone finished it in less than an hour.

To be broke;

As used in this song, to be broke is to have very little or no money at all to spend.

Example:

My friends keep asking me if I want to go out tonight, but I’m completely broke.

Be careful not to confuse it with being broken.

If something is broken, that means that it is not working (functioning).

Like, when a phone stops working and you can’t use it anymore, it’s probably broken, and needs to be fixed.

In this case, broken can also imply to be fractured or damaged and no longer in one piece.

He was trying to play football, but all he got was a broken arm.

Music:

Your job’s a joke, you’re broke

Your love life’s D.O.A.

Narrator:

Your love life’s D.O.A.

D.O.A. means Dead-On-Arrival,  a term often utilized in the medical field to a person who needed urgent medical assistance, but died before arriving at the hospital.

In the song, it is used figuratively, meaning to say that the person’s relationships all seem to end very quickly.

However, more commonly we might use the term non-existent, meaning that it doesn’t exist.

Example:

Her prospects for a new job are non-existent.

Music:

  • It’s like you’re always stuck in second gear.

Narrator:

Stuck in second gear;

A gear is the mechanism used for controlling the speed of a vehicle such as a car or motorcycle.

If a car is stuck in second gear, you can’t shift (change) its gear from second to third, so, you can’t move it any faster than what second gear allows you.

In this line, the song compares a person’s life with a care being stuck in second gear- that is,  when you start “running” and having some progress, but can’t go any faster than second gear (slow speed).

Music:

  • When it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month or even your year.

Narrator:

It hasn’t been your day, your week, your month or even your year ;

When you feel like everything around you is working for you, that you are are lucky for how well yoyr life is going on a particular day, you can say that it is your day.

If the time you are referring to is a week, a month, or year,  you can say the corresponding period of time.

Example:

This is totally my year.

I have been promoted twice at work in the last three months,  and it’s only March.

The song talks about the opposite of this situation-When it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month.

Example:

I failed my test and lost my credit card.

This really hasn’t been my day.

Music:

I’ll be there for you

When the rain starts to pour.

Narrator:

To pour;

when referring to a liquid, pouring means to drop (fall).

It’s mostly used when referring to drinks- when talking about filling up a container.

Example:

Could you pour me sone milk?

When we refer to the rain, it means that it is raining heavily.

We can also make this into a phrasal verb with the same meaning by adding the preposition “down”.

Wow, it’s pouring (down) outside.

Music:

You’re still in bed at ten.

You’re still- in beh- daten.

You’re still in bed at ten.

The work began at eight.

The work began-na-deit.

The work began at eight.

You’ve burned your breakfast, so far, things are going great.

Narrator:

So far; As used in the song, it means until now;

Up to the present moment.

Example:

  • Are you enjoying the movie?

  • So far, I haven’t really liked it.

Nothing has happened yet.

To be going great;

Successful and happening in a good way.

Example:

This trip is going great!

I’m having so much fun.

Music:

Your mother warned you there’d be days like these.

(Your mother warn-jew there’d be days like these.)

Your mother warned you there’d be days like these.

But what she didn’t tell you when the world has brought you down to your knees.

Narrator:

To warn;

To inform someone in advance of a danger,  problem, or other unpleasant situation that will happen soon, or that has the possibility of happening.

Example:

I warned her not to waste her money on that movie.

Brought you down to your knees:

If something brings you down to your knees, it defeats you, or makes you extremely weak, as if you were on your knees (figuratively).

The breakup (ended relationship) really brought him down to his knees.

Music:

But what she didn’t tell you when the world…

Buh-wuh-she didn’t tell you when the world…

But what she didn’t tell you when the world has brought you down to your knees and seems you’re the only one who knows what it’s like to be me someone to face the day with.

Narrator:

What it’s like;

How it is;

what it feels like.

Example:

What it’s like to save lives?

It’s impossible for men to comprehend what it’s like to give birth.

Face the day:

The verb to face is to confront and deal with, or accept.

So, to face the day is to deal with the day’s challenges, and take action.

Example:

She couldn’t face the teacher after she had once again forgotten to do her homework.

Music:

Seems you’re the only one who knows

What it’s like to be me (wuh-dits like to be me)

What it’s like to be me

someone to face the day with

Make it through all the rest with

Someone I’ll always laugh with

Even at my worst, I’m best with you, yeah.

Narrator:

To make it through;

To persevere (continue to progress) through a difficult situation or period of time.

That meeting was so boring, I didn’t think I was going to make it through.

I successfully made it through another semester of my Masters!

The rest;

What remains;

everything els.

Example:

It’s delicious, but I can’t finish all this dessert.

Do you want the rest?

At my worst;

If you are “at your worst”, you are in the most serious, understand, or unpleasant state.

Example:

When I get to exercise and meditate in the morning, I’m at my best.

That’s why when I travel, I’m usually at my worst.
