what is up! I’m Ethan, Your RealLife English fluency coach, and I have a dynamite lesson for

you today with the series 13 Reasons Why.

Season 2 just came out on Netflix and I’m really excited about this. I’m already watching it and I

love this series.

However, it’s a bit different than what we usually do because it is a drama. It’s what we might

say in English a bit of tear jerker

so you might get your Kleenex ready. I got mine right here just in case it gets a little emotional

But really, we’re going to have some fun today with this. We’re actually doing a two-parter, The

first part, we took an interview from Ellen, where she’s interviewing the two main stars of the

series and something you might actually notice is that the main actress is Australian. You’ll

notice she has an Australian accent, but in the series she plays an American, so pay attention to

that contrast because then in the part 2 lesson we will be breaking down a scene from the

series which will be bringing you later.

So, let’s jump in to part 1. And first, if you’re new here, please remember to subscribe because

we make new lessons like these for learners like you every single week. Alright, let’s get into the lesson.

everyone is watching this show.

I mean, the breakout hit and I know sometimes when you’re shooting, as an actor, you’re kind of like in a vacuum and you don’t understand that … what happened in the world.

when did you realize, all the sudden, the popularity?

do you have a certain realization moment?

well, I feel like there was definitely a really big moment for me like a week ago.

I don’t have Twitter, Lady Gaga tweeted at me, like reposted an interview where…

I was fangirling and wrote”Katherine” with a love heart. and I kind of freaked out a little bit.

and if anyone knows Katherine, like, if we’re doing an interview and I bring up the words Lady Gaga…

we have to take a minute and like stop

so I think that was a big moment for her.

and what about you?

yeah, well for me, I mean, I go to coachella every year and uh, for fun…

yeah, Coachella, right?

Uhm, but then I went last weekend and it kind of put into perspective how many people are actually watching the show

at one point I was working in front of a crowd and I heard some people whispering, and then someone is like, “is there gonna be a season 2?” and I was like “I have no idea.”

And then someone, when I was passed them, went “Clay” Just one person.

and I turn around and I just waved and everybody screamed like everybody screamed and I just didn’t know what…

I felt scared, I like ran away. I didn’t know what to do.

no one screamed at you before?

No one has a scream at me before, I mean at least not for good reason…

and so each episode you see more and more things that became The Perfect Storm of what happens to this poor girl.

and I think it’s amazing and I think the reason it’s resonating is, you know, most people , not just teenagers but most people watching it, no matter how old you are, has experienced some type of that abuse, whatever it is.

and there’s a lot of different things that happened.

don’t you feel like you’re helping so many young people for putting

  • I know there’s a lot of controversy because people say there’s a lot of heaviness in the show - and there is heaviness.

but in high school right now and even in younger, kids are experience this kind of bullying and all the different things

so you’re doing a service to parents to help them with their kids understanding this, don’t you think?

yeah I mean the main goal I think overall is just to start conversation that with thing are necessary to be had and bring these issues to light and to show them is a real way and many people are talking about it

we reached our goal, I mean cause these conversations

people need to talk about this,

a hit is something that has got a lot of success and popularity

when we say something is a breakout hit we’re saying it’s achieve extreme popularity in a very short period of time

Avatar was a breakout hit in 2009

to shoot

to make a movie or video or take a photograph of something it can also be used as a noun

for example they are going to shoot the movie in New Zealand

I took some lovely shots of the birds

we are also often say video shoot or photo shoot but remember not to make a common mistake of saying video/photo shooting

vacuum

an empty space in which there is no air or other gases

when we say that something happens in a vacuum or is in a vacuum I mean it is separated and not Influenced by people, event, etc

Ellen says actors are in a vacuum while shooting because at the point they don’t receive any response from the public as the film hasn’t yet been released

when did you realise all the sudden the popularity?

All the sudden

happening fast and in the moment you don’t expect it; surprising

I was walking down the street when all the sudden I heard a noise coming out of the darkness

fangirling

a fan girl (like fan boys is for boys) is a girl or woman who is the fan for someone or something

when this word is used as a verb

it means to behave in an obsessive or over excited way

she was fangirling over the autograph she received from Adel

freak out

to lose control of your emotions by getting really happy and excited or experiencing other types of emotions like anger anxiety etc

and I bring up the words Lady Gaga we have to take a minute or like stop

bring (something) up

to mention and make something a topic of conversation

she told her boyfriend not to bring up religion when he meets her parents
