متن انگلیسی درس
Did you bring any wine?
No.
I betrayed my closest friend and watched him burn.
Now Varys’s ashes can tell my ashes:
“See, I told you.”
So, is there life after death?
Not that I’ve seen.
I should be thankful.
Oblivion is the best I could hope for.
I strangled my lover.
I shot my own father with a crossbow.
I betrayed my queen.
You didn’t.
I did.
I betrayed my closest friend and watched him burn.
Watched him burn.
I betrayed my closest friend and watched him burn.
To betray someone means to reveal information that involves someone, who had put their trust in you or to do something to break your loyalty
to that person.
He broke the law, betrayed his family, fled our land.
Now Varys’s ashes can tell my ashes.
“See, I told you.”
Ashes
The remainders of burnt material.
Tyrion is probably thinking he will also be burned to death by Danny’s dragon, as Varys was.
Then, Tyrion describes Varys saying, “I told you.”
This is what someone might tell another person when it’s clear they were right.
But the other person decided not to listen.
Often this is followed by “so”: I told you so.
He says this because Varys saw that Queen Daenerys was becoming crazy, but Tyrion didn’t want to believe it until it was too late.
So, is there life after death?
Not that I’ve seen.
Not that I’ve seen.
Not that I’ve seen.
Not that I’ve seen.
The construction “ Not that I…” is used to make a negative statement saying that you don’t know something.
Did you kill King Joffrey?
No.
Did your wife,the Lady Sansa?
Not that I know of.
Not that I know of it is a common collocation using this construction, but other verbs can also be used.
Example, not that I even care, but has she called?
Not that it’s any of my business, but are you dating him?
Oblivion is the best I could hope for.
Oblivion is the state of something that is not remembered, used, or thought about any more.
Example, everybody rumors the winner.
Sadly, if those in second place always fall into oblivion.
The adjective of oblivious can be used to describe a person that is not noticing or is not aware of something.
Example, as he was cheating on his exam, he was oblivious for the teacher was watching him.
Strangled my lover.
I shot my own father with a crossbow.
To strangle is to kill by preventing someone from breathing, especially with one’s hands.
Here he’s specifically talking about strangling his lover, Shae in season 4.
A crossbow is the weapon seen here.
I tried to make peace with Cersei.
She used their innocence as a weapon against me.
She thought it would cripple me.
And Tyrion?
He conspired behind my back with my enemies.
Forgive him.
I can’t.
You can.
Please, Dany.
We can’t hide behind small mercies.
The world we need won’t be built by men loyal to the world we have.
The world we need is a world of mercy.
It has to be
And it will be.
We do it togheter.
We break the wheel together.
She used their innocence as a weapon against me.
She thought it would cripple me.
To cripple means to make something or someone unable to work or function normally.
We see more of this word later in the video.
He conspired behind my back with my enemies.
Forgive him.
Forgive him.
Forgive him.
Forgive him.
To do something behind someone’s back means to do or say something with bad intention about someone when they are not present.
You defend these men who insult you behind you back.
Some are happy to do it to my face.
Daenerys accuses Tyrion of conspiring against her, as we mentioned before.
To forgive means to stop being angry with someone and no longer want to punish them.
I’ve been searching for you, Daenerys Stormborn, to ask your forgiveness.
Well, forgive me for wasting your time, then.
I will not forgive that.
I will punish them with any arms at my disposal.
The world we need is a world of mercy.
It has to be.
If someone shows mercy, they choose to forgive or to be kind to someone who they have the power to hurt or punish.
Thus,a world with mercy would be a world where everybody would have the capacity to forgive someone instead of trying to punish them or looking for a revenge.
We break the wheel togheter.
Daenerys often talks about breaking the wheel.
While this is not a common expression, what she’s referring to is
the cycle of suffering caused by terrible kings and queens in Westeros
(and elsewhere) that goes around and around like a wheel.
She claims that she will end injustice by breaking this wheel.
This is our city now.
If you look outside the walls of your city, you’ll find thousands of Northmen who will explain to you why harming Jon Snow is not in your interest.
Some of you may be quick to forgive.
The Ironborn are not.
I swore to follows Daenerys Targaryen.
Swore to follow a tyrant.
She freed us from a tyrant.
Cersei is gone because of her, and Jon Snow put a knife in her heart.
Let the Unsullied give him what he deserves.
Say another word about killing my brother and I’ll cut your throat.
Friends, please
Harming Jon Snow is not in your interest.
If something is in your interest, it benefits you in some way.
Sansa is basically saying that harming Jon will cause the North men to want to avenge his death.
This is a formal expression that you can often hear in business.
Example, it’s not in the company’s best interest to have public opinion against it.
Some of you may be quick to forgive.
The Ironborn are not.
If someone is quick to do something, he or she has a tendency to do such a thing.
Example, he’s quick to make excuses when he does something wrong.
I swore to follows Daenerys Targaryen.
To swear is to promise you’ll do something. In a kingdom subjects swear to follow or be loyal to their king or queen.
Will you fight for me?
Swear to me.
And the other night, after I left her, she went to meet him.
I swear to you.
Swear to me on what?
On my life.
But I don’t care about your life.
You swore to follow a tyrant.
She freed us from a tyrant.
A tyrant is a person who has complete power in a country and uses it in a cruel and unfair way, like Cersei or Joffrey.
Here Sansa calls Daenerys a tyrant.
Here, Yare uses free as a verb, meaning to help someone escape something, in this case, the tyranny of Circe’s leadership.
Let the Unsullied give him what he deserves.
Say another word about killing my brother and I’ll cut your throat.
And I’ll cut your throat.
And I’ll cut your throat.
Let the Unsullied give him what he deserves.
Say another word about killing my brother and I’ll cut your throat.
To deserve something means that you are worthy of either a reward or punishment, depending on the context.
Example, you did an excellent job on this project. I think
you’re deserve a raise.
Yara is saying that John deserves the punishment of dying for the crime of
killing the Queen.
Your throat is the front part of your neck specifically where food and liquid passes when you eat or drink.
Arya is obviously threatening to kill Yara.
John committed his crime here.
His fate is for our King to decide.
Or our queen.
My lords and ladies.
I suppose this is the most important moment of our lives.
What we decide today will reverberate through the annals of history.
I stand before you as one of the senior Lords in the country.
A veteran of two wars. And I’d like to think my experience has led
to some small skill in statecraft…
Uncle?
Please sit.
In one of the few funny moments in this episode, Sansa shoots down her uncle’s claim (probably to be the new King) without mercy.
This also is interesting because it shows how much she’s evolved as a character, commanding more respect than her uncle who is her senior.
Jon committed his crime here.
In this context, to commit means to do and is always co-located with something wrong or illegal.
Some collocations are: to commit murder, suicide, adultery, etc.
We’ve committed treason all of us.
Walder Frey commit sacrilege that day.
Is fate it’s for our King to decide.
Fate is what will happen to a person or think the future that someone or something will have.
So I will let the gods decide my fate.
I demand a trial by combat.
We decide today reverberate through the annals of history.
Sansa’s uncle speech here is full of formal and sophisticated words.
Reverberate means to echo or vibrate.
Example, the lion’s roar reverberating through the canyon.
The phrase “reverberate through the annals of history” is a figurative way to say that whatever action they take in that moment will have an effect in all that’s to come in the future.
Annals our chronological historical records, and this word is usually used as a phrase “in the annals of …”
Example, His name will live on forever in the annals of science.
I stand before you as one of the senior Lords in the country.
Before, as used here is a formal synonym of “ in front of.”
Senior can mean old, but in this case, it means experienced.
As a senior lord, he’s held his ruling position for longer than many of the other Lords in the kingdom.
You will hear this word used in everyday English as well.
If you say for example, “my brothers two years my senior”, you’re saying your brother is two years older than you.
A veteran of two wars.
A veteran is someone who has fought in a war.
But he’s the veteran of a hundred battles.
They wrote songs about him.
You can also use this word to describe anyone who’s experienced in a particular field.
Example, he’s a veteran journalist who is usually the first find out important news.
I like to think my experience has led to some small skill in statecraft.
Statecraft is the ability to work as a statesman: that’s to say, someone in a political position in charge of ruling over a state.
Why just us?
We represent all the great houses, but whoever we choose, they won’t just rule over lords and ladies.
Maybe the decision about what’s best for everyone should be left to … well, everyone.
Maybe we should give the dogs a vote as well.
I’ll ask my horse.
To rule means to govern, to have the official power to control a country and the people who live there.
Example, the Queen ruled the country for 55 years.
And sometimes we say rule over with the same meaning.
Example, In Medieval times many English Kings tried to rule over Scotland but failed to do so.
Here, everybody laughs at Sam because what he’s proposing is that the
next King be chosen by all the citizens of Westeros instead of by those with authority.
What he’s actually suggesting is that they adopt a democratic approach to deciding who the next leader should be.
Something to consider here is that Game of Thrones is based on Medieval
Times, and in such a period the idea of democracy was basically non existent, and if anything seemed like a crazy concept.
Who, then?
There’s nothing in the world more powerful than a good story.
Nothing can stop it.
No enemy can defeat it.
And who has a better story Than Bran the Broken?
He crossed beyond the wall, a crippled boy, and
became the Three-Eyed Raven.
Who better to lead us into the future?
Bran has no interest in ruling and he can’t father children.
Good.
Sons of kings can be cruel and stupid, as you well know.
His will never torment us.
That is the wheel our queen wanted to break.
From now on, rulers will not be born.
They will be chosen on this spot are the lords and ladies of Westeros to serve the realm.
Nothing can stop it.
Nothing can stop it.
Nothing can stop it.
Nothing can stop it.
No enemy can defeat it.
This means to win; to beat an opponent.
This could be in a game, contest, or, as is most the case, in Game of Thrones, of war or battle.
Defeated my brother at the Battle of Ashford.
Only battle Robert ever lost.
And who has a better story than Bran The Broken?
Bran has been given the name of “Bran The Broken”.
This is similar to medieval time practices where kings of Europe would be given a name that describes a characteristic of themselves or their reign.
Some examples are: William the Conqueror, Edward the lawgiver, Edward the Confessor.
We hear many such names given to leaders in Game of Thrones, for example, among Daenerys’ many names, she is the Breaker of Chains.
He crossed beyond the wall, a crippled boy, and became the Three-Eyed Raven.
If someone is a cripple, it means that some part of their body doesn’t work.
For example, their legs.
A more polite word to use is handicapped.
We can also say that someone is impaired or disabled.
For example, handicap parking.
Who better to lead us into the future?
To guide someone to a place especially; to act as a leader.
Let’s take a look at these examples of lead.
I believed in him.
I thought he was the man to lead us through the long night but I was wrong just like you.
This woman will lead him into a war he cannot win.
Bran has no interest in ruling and he can’t father children.
Father here is used as a rather formal verb.
For a man, this simply means to have children.
Example he fathered four daughters who have all lead successful
lives.
Good.
Sons of Kings can be cruel and stupid, as you well know.
His will never torment us.
If someone is cruel, they cause others pain or suffering ( either physical or emotional) on purpose and without concern about it.
I’ll never be cruel to you again. Do you understand me.?
You’re my lady now…
To torment is to cause someone a lot of suffering.
Sansa was supposed to marry Joffrey and did marry Ramsay Bolton.
Both enjoyed causing and watching people suffering.
This is why she knows that sons of Kings can be cruel.
From now on, rulers will not be born. they will be chosen on this spot by the lords and ladies of Westeros to serve the realm.
We’ve already considered the verb to rule as a synonym of to govern.
A ruler, therefore, is a person in a position to rule.
When we talk about a ruler, we generally think of a king, emperor, dictator, etc.
This word would not be very appropriate to describe a politician in a democratic state, such as a president or prime minister.
By “be chosen on this spot” Tyrion means that the new ruler will be chosen at the place where they’re gathered at that moment.
A realm is a kingdom, that is, a country that is ruled by king or queen.
Sent copies of that letter to every corner of the realm from the Arbor to the Wall.
I did what I did for the good of the realm.
The realm?
Do you know what the realm is?
I know you don’t want it. I know you don’t care about power.
But I ask you now, if we choose you will you.. will you wear the crown?
Will you lead the seven kingdoms to the best of your abilities from this day until your last day?
Why do you think I came all this way?
The Brandon of House Stark.
I say aye.
Aye.
Aye, Aye, Aye, Aye, Aye , Aye.
I love you little brother.
I always will. You’ll be a good king.
But tens of thousands of Northman fell in the Great War defending all of Westeros.
And those who survived have seen too much and fought too hard ever to kneel again.
The North will remain an independent Kingdom, as it was for thousands of years.
All hail Brand the Broken, First of His Name, King of the Andals and the First Men, Lord of the Six Kingdoms protector of the realm.
Will you lead the seven kingdoms to the best of your abilities from this day until your last day?
This is a formal expression used to say that someone makes an effort to do something as well as possible.
Example, she raised her kids to the best of her abilities as a single mother.
Public speaking is not what he does best, but he gave the presentation to the best of his abilities and managed to keep everybody engaged the whole time.
Why do you think I came all this way?
What Brand means is, that he came from a very far away place.
We often say this as, for example, I came all the way from the other side of the country to watch them perform live.
I missed last bus so I had to walk all the way home from work.
He means that he came because he already knew before that it would be his duty to become the new king and beyond just his journey from
Winterfell to King’s Landing, he may be referring to his whole long journey that we’ve seen throughout the series.
To Brandon of House Stark I say aye.
This means yes in Old English. The opposite is nay. While not common, you can hear these words he used when a group is voting verbally.
All hail Bran The Broken, First of His Name, King of the Andals and the First
Men, Lord of the Six Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm.
This is an expression used to approve enthusiastically a king or queen.
In movies, series or books set in past times, you might also find “all hail the king”.
