Vocabulary and Expressions:
Lover:
A romantic partner.
(generally NOT someone you have sex with just one time).
Example : What do you want to do this weekend, lover?
Shots:
A small does of alcohol.
Example : Let’s take a shot!Tequila or whisky?
Come over:
To move towards the speaker.
Example : Come over here and give me a kiss.
Start up:
To begin or set in motion.
(Adding ‘up’ puts more emphasis on ‘start’).
Example : I can’t start up my motorcycle. Could you help?
Jukebox:
A music machine found in bars.
Example : I’m going to put my favourite song on the jukebox.
Don’t mind me:
Don’t worry about what I am doing.
Example : Don’t mind me, I just need to fix this and then I’ll leave.
Waist:
Part of the body between the ribs and hips.
Example : He put his hand on her waist while they danced.
Follow my lead:
To mimic someone’s actions.
Example : Just follow the instructor’s lead and try to keep up.
Shape of:
Something’s form, contours or outline.
Example : She liked the shape of his nose.
Magnet:
Something that attracts other things.
(e.g. an iron magnet attracts iron and other metals).
Example : It’s a bad idea to get a magnet near your phone.
Heart is falling:
To be falling in love.
(Not a common expression)
Example : My heart is falling hard for her.
Bedsheets:
Linens used to dress a bed.
Example : I need to wash my bedsheets.
Brand new:
Recently acquired.
(‘brand’ adds emphasis to ‘new’)
Example : You like my watch? It’s brand new!
One week in:
After one week of time.
(Can be any amount of time in)
Example : The movie was awful, I left 20 minutes in.
Thrifty:
Using money carefully and not wanting it.
Example: Traveling world taught me to be thrifty.
Bag:
Slang term for a woman’s purse.
Example : I’ll hold your bag while you buy the tickets.
Sweet and sour:
A sauce with contrasting flavours.
Example : I usually order sweet and sour pork at the Chinese restaurant.
Doing okay:
Doing well, not bad.
Example : She said she’s doing okay since the break-up.
Backseat:
The rear part of a vehicle.
Example : Do you want to ride in the front or the backseat?
Grammar and culture:
Bar vs. Club:
Bar: for sitting, drinking.
(sometimes live music).
Club: place with drinks and loud music for dancing.
Van the man:
Van Morrison - singer famous for “Brown Eyed Girl”.
Like a magnet do:
Grammatical error- should be “like a magnet does”.
Pronunciation :
To find a lover:
Fine-duh luh-vuh.
(Note: in American English the R is pronounced in “Lover”).
Example : It’s so hard to find a lover in this town.
Doing shots:
doin’ shots.
Example : Things got messy when we started doing shots.
Reduction of ‘And’ :
Me and my = me-n-my.
Push and pull = push-n-pull.
Sweet and the sour = sweet-n-thuh-sour.
Hours and hours = hours-n’hours.
Example : Could you pass the salt and pepper?
Give it a chance:
give-ih-uh chance.
Example : You’ve never even tried haggis.

Start to dance:
Star-tuh-dance.
Example : The music came on and they started to dance.
I want your love:
I wanchur love.
Example : I want your love, do you feel the same?
