Haha yeah today we are learning with the one the only Will Smith.

So will smith has got to be one of the most charismatic guys out there from singing to acting to youtubing, he’s really done it all.

So today we will first learn with him seeing a rap song on The Ellen Show, and then he is going to tell us a story about jumping out of a plane.

In addition to all that we have a really fantastic pronunciation lesson prepared for you today

Our first guest is one of the biggest movies stars in the world.

Please, welcome Will Smith.

On your mark ready set let’s go

Dance floor pro I know you know I go psycho when my new joint hit

Just can’t sit

Got to get jiggy with it, that’s it

Now honey honey come ride DKNY all up in my eye

You gotta Prada bag with a lot a stuff in it

Give it to your friend let’s spin

Everybody lookin’ at me Glancin’ the kid

Wish you nig was dancin’ the jig

Here with this handsome kid Ciga-cigar right from Cuba-Cuba

I just bite it

It’s for the look I don’t light it

I llway the amay on the anceday orflay

Give it up jiggy make it feel like foreplay

Yo my cardio is infinite

Ha ha

Big willie style’s all in it

Gettin jiggy wit it, Na na na na, na na na na.

Gettin jiggy wit it, Na na na na, na na na na.

Gettin jiggy wit it, Na na na na, na na na na .

Gettin jiggy wit it, Na na na na, na na na na .

Wow, well, thanks a lot, Ellen!

It’s been great.

That’s all we’ve got time for.

Thank you very much, everyone.

We’ll take a quick commercial break, and Hi, Will. That was.

That was enjoyable.

On your mark ready set let’s go

Dance floor pro I know you know I go psycho when my new joint hit

Will starts his song off with a variation of the expression on your mark, get set, go.

This is what athletes (such as runners) are told before competing in a race.

Will here uses it to just mean “get ready”.

Why are you ignoring me?

All right, on your mark.

Look. I didn’t mean to weird you out yesterday.

Stop it. I’m not falling for these little mind games.

Get set.

It’s not a game. It’s how I feel.

I said enough, Sanjay.

Run, Sanjay!

What’s happening?

He must know something we don’t.

Stop running, Alex! It’s a trap!

Then he says, dance floor pro.

The dance floor is the area, generally of a club or discotheque,

that’s dedicated to dancing.

We have to dance to this.

With each other?

Uh-huh.

Oh, no. Dance floors aren’t my thing.

Oh, let’s not limit ourselves.

NO. I can’t.

Yes, you can, come on.

Now, a dance floor pro is how Will is referring to a person who can dance very well.

Which of these would be another way to say pro?

As you’ll see, the main theme of this song is dancing. In fact, the name of this song is get jiggy wit it.

To get jiggy is hip hop slang that means to start dancing.

Dance floor pro I know you know I go psycho when my new joint hit

Just can’t sit

To go psycho means to go crazy, which figuratively means to become very enthusiastic about something.

In this line, joint means song (a very uncommon slang) and hit means play.

We often would say hit it meaning “start playing the music”.

So, he’s saying that when his new song is played, he can’t sit, which means he can’t help to start dancing.

We often use the collocation can’t sit still, meaning we need to move.

My little brother can’t sit steel; he needs constant entertainment.

From his Prince of Bel Air days his recent Aladdin movie, you probably know Will Smith never misses the chance to bust some moves when the opportunity presents itself.

Got to get jiggy with it, that’s it

Now honey honey come ride DKNY all up in my eye

You gotta Prada bag with a lot a stuff in it

Give it to your friend let’s spin

Honey is a term of endearment, similar to baby, usually used for a romantic partner.

Here is simply asking a girl to dance with him (come ride) DKNY is a fashion brand.

Prada is an even more famous luxury fashion firm, known for its shoes and bags.

The thing with Prada bags is that they are enormous. Plus he says to the girl that she has a lot of stuff in it.

Why does he say that?

Well, carrying a big prada bag is not practical when you want to get jiggy or start dancing.

So, he says “give it to your friend, let’s spin”

Here let’s spin is another way to say let’s start dancing.

Everybody lookin’ at me Glancin’ the kid

Whish you nig was dancin’ the jig

Here with this handsome kid Ciga-Cigar right from Cuba-Cuba

Glance is one of the many verbs that mean to see or look, but that have a different nuance or connotation.

So, to glance or to take a glance at something is to look at something quickly.

Okay, look, I know you’re giving this speech on your own.

But I wrote up a few talking points for you to take a look at.

Hope you don’t mind.

I’ll glance at it.

In the lyrics of this song, however, glance is used with the sense of just looking at someone continuously, maybe because he is attractive or skilled

So, which of these verbs is not similar to glance?

Here with this handsome kid Ciga-Ciga right from Cuba-Cuba

I just bite it

It’s for the look I don’t light it

This is a cigar.

The most widely recognized cigars come from Cuba.

He’s saying that he likes just to put the cigar in his mouth, but not actually smoke it.

He does it for the look.

You can see here that Joey also thinks that a cigar in his mouth makes him look cool.

An interesting thing to note here is that Will Smith has always tried to be a positive role model.

He doesn’t talk about violence, he doesn’t curse and he doesn’t talk about drugs or other unhealthy things.

This shows in this line because he doesn’t want to condone [support] smoking.

That’s why he says he doesn’t light the cigar.

I llway the amay on the anceday orflay Never heard any of these words before? Well, that’s because this is pig Latin, a way to transform words so others can’t understand you.

Translate, it reads: “Will, the man on the dance floor”.

Give it up jiggy make it feel like foreplay Yo my cardio is infinite

Ha ha

Big willie style’s all in it Gettin jiggy wit it,

Then he says his cardio is infinite. He is referring to his stamina.

Stamina is your ability to perform a physical (cardiovascular) activity, like running, dancing, swimming, etc. for a long time without getting tired.

We have two pronunciation tips in this lesson with Will and Ellen:

First, do you know how to pronounce these words?

Did you pronounce them like Will and Ellen do here?

You’re a very… energetic and adventurous person.

Energetic and adventurous.

Yes.

And that’s a dangerous combination.

Words with this ending can be tricky to pronounce for some learners.

However, it’s not so hard if you take just a moment to focus on the vowel sounds at play here to learn, understand and then, with practice, master this sound combination.

What’s important to know is that these are just two schwa sounds.

Schwa sounds like this: [uh], [uh]

Repeat after me:

adventurous, adventurous. dangerous, dangerous. Let’s see other examples of words with this ending:

This is preposterous.

You know, it’s not exactly glamorous up there.

That’s…that’s… That’s very generous.

How do you pronounce these numbers:

Let’s see how Will says this number.

And part of what I’ve been doing in my 50 th year …

Can recognize the individual sounds?

You said, “for my 50 th birthday, you jump out of a plane for me.”

All these numbers that end in 0 from 20 to 90 end in an [i] sound.

The “th” on the other hand is pronounced [th].

However, between these two sounds we add an [e] sound, and so we say: 30 th, 40 th, 50 th, etc.

The traditional 20 th gift is china…

My parents’ 40 th anniversary’s coming up and I can’t think of a thing to get them.

Your wedding day, your honeymoon, your 50 th anniversary.

Have you ever jumped?

No. you know what, when I was younger, I thought that I wanted to do that.

It was kind of a dream of mine.

And as I got older and wiser, I decided I don’t want to do that.

We should do it together. We would break the internet if we did it together.

Yeah, I’m sure we would. And I don’t need to do that.

I’ve done it on the Oscars, and I’m done.

Don’t need to break it again.

Wasn’t all it was cracked up to be?

No…

No, I think that– and I’m scared of heights.

And I like to–

I think the feeling would be amazing.

But I can’t imagine, like on the edge…

The edge is terrible

Right before.

No, no, no. That’s the bad part.

That’s the bad part.

But then once you’re out, it’s like it’s such a lesson in life, right?

And part of what I’ve been doing in my 50 th year, I’ve been trying to experience all the things that I’d never let myself experience before.

And I’m doing, you know, my bucket list experiences. And sort of what I discovered is how… how cancerous fear can be in experiencing a life.

If you’re, like you can’t be happy if you’re scared, you know? So I’m really confronting all the things that I’ve ever been scared of.

And I’m just finding this really exuberant freedom in life, you know?

Have you ever jumped?

When you want to ask someone about an experience they have had, you should use the present perfect.

A common mistake some lower intermediate and intermediate learners usually make is to use the simple past for questions like these.

For example, when meaning to ask:

Have you ever watched that movie?

They might say…

did you watch that movie?

So, have you ever spent a long time on a boat before? Yeah.

Are you referring to the time we got stuck on the small World ride at Disneyland?

Have you ever been to the Caribbean?

I went there three years ago for spring break, and got stung by a jellyfish.

My friend had to pee on my leg.

Joe, (have) you ever been in love?

I don’t know.

Then you haven’t.

I decided I don’t want to do that.

We should do it together.

We would break the internet if we did it together.

Yeah, I’m sure we would. And I don’t need to do that.

I’ve done it on the Oscars, and I’m done.

How’s your knowledge of the conditional tenses?

Can you identify which type of conditional sentence this is?

This is the second conditional, and we use it to talk about a hypothetical / imaginary situation and its consequences. The hypothetical situation here is Will and Ellen jumping together.

The consequence, the internet getting broken.

Also, notice that you can invert the format of the sentence.

Will says:

We would break the internet, if we did it together

But you can also say:

If we did it together, We would break the internet

By the way, we say to break the internet when a person, usually a celebrity, does something that receives an immense amount of attention; in other words, it goes viral.

In 2014, Ellen broke the internet when she shared a selfie she took at the Oscars with other celebrities.

We also saw Jennifer Aniston recently break the internet when she posted a picture of a reunion with the other cast members of friends.

To from the second conditional, we use IF + the simple past.

Then, in the other half of the sentence, we use would+ an infinitive verb.

Let’s take a look at some other examples of the second conditional.

If I was a superhero who could fly and be invisible…that would be the best.

If I had one wish, it’d be to build a time machine, go back to when I was 7 when Jimmy Hauser had chicken pox… I would grab that kid and rub him all over my face.

Instead of would, you can also use should or could.

If you wanted to punish them, you should have just made them hang out here.

Don’t need to break it again.

Wasn’t all it was cracked up to be?

No…

If something is not all that it’s cracked up to be, it’s not everything that you hoped based on what other people have said about it.

Everyone loves that new ice cream place, but it’s really not all it’s cracked up to be.

To be honest, darling, having children isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Given my chance again, I’m not sure I’d have any.

Another way we would express a similar idea is saying it doesn’t live up to its reputation; it doesn’t live up to expectations or to the hype.

You can’t force your kids to live up to your unreal expectations.

They’re not perfect, but you love them anyway.

Also applies to adults, probably more so.

And I like to–

I think the feeling would be amazing.

But I can’t imagine, like on the edge…

The edge is terrible.

Right before.

No, no, no. That’s the bad part.

That’s the bad part.

The edge is the outside limit of an object, area, of surface.

Here, they’re talking about the edge of the plane, which is where they stand right before jumping.

I’ve been trying to experience all the things that I’d never let myself experience before.

And I’m doing, you know, my bucket list experiences.

A bucket list is a number of experiences or achievements that a person hopes to have or accomplish during their lifetime.

For example, traveling to a specific place could be on your bucket list.

Maybe, learning English is something on your bucket list which you can cross off.

Meaning, you’ve already achieved it.

Learning to play the guitar has always been on his bucket list. He’s finally doing it.

Five years ago, I made a bucket list.

It was time to start crossing things off.

So I’m really confronting all the things that I’ve ever been scared of.

And I’m just finding this really exuberant freedom in life, you know?

This is an adjective meaning extreme happiness and enthusiasm.

It also means abundance; plentiful. So, when Will says “exuberant freedom” he’s saying he felt a deep feeling of freedom.
