Roach Vacation Commentary text by ghasem keshtkar(richardghk) 28299

Hi. This is AJ Again whith another commentary. this is a commentary for roach vacation. Now, I’m not going to talk about roaches right now, but I’m going to talk about vacations and travel. So actually that, story, that roach vacation story it came from my idea came from my travels to Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Chapel Hill North Carolina is where Chris Moses lives. Chris the other person on these lessons Chris Moses. So Chris lives in Chapel Hill North Carolina. Chapel Hill North Carolina is in the East, the eastern part of the United States. It’s actually in the Southeast. So North Carolina is in this Southeast. I AJ. I live in San Francisco, which is in the West on the west coast, of course. So I had a very difficult trip coming here. It was terrible in fact, so I had a ticket of course. I had a ticket on American Airlines to fly to Chapel Hill. I was supposed to get up in the morning and leave in the morning. I think it was nine o’clock in the morning and I was supposed to arrive in Chapel Hill about seven o’clock at night. Seven or eight at night so it would be okay. It’s a little bit long because I had to fly across the United States across the country, but not bad. Unfortunately the night before they American Airlines called me on my cell phone at 2 a.m. 2 in the morning. They called me and left a message. So I’m sleepy, I wake up. Check my message. It says your Flight is cancelled. Damn it Man I was Unhappy. my flight was cancelled and they gave me a new flight. The new flight was leaving. I think at 10 o’clock at night, which is terrible. I hate to fly at night. I hate buses at night, I hate planes at night. It’s terrible because I can’t sleep. You know, some people are lucky they can sleep on a plane. Tomoey [Aj’s wife] can sleep On a plane, she’s usually okay, but she’s little. But I know people they get on a plane they can fly all night and they sleep and the next day they don’t feel terrible they feel okay, but not me. I feel terrible when I take a bus or a train at night. I never sleep. Also. I have long legs. My legs are very long and the seats are Always very small and so it’s very uncomfortable for me. All for me, so I was I was unhappy they changed my flight. Anyway, I slept all night and the next day I got up and so I went to the airport but then I got to the airport and my flight was cancelled again, they cancelled it again, and now they gave me a new flight this time at 11 o’clock at night. So 11:30. I think it was so this is my third. It now it’s at 11:30 flight. So very late. I’m tired. I’m at the airport. So anyway, I sit at the San Francisco Airport. Luckily, I had my computer so they had a wireless connection. I could I could get on the internet. So I did some email just waiting for my plane and then they delayed my flight so they didn’t cancel. It not cancelled not finished. But’ but they delayed it. It’s a delayed means late. It’s going to be late. So now my flight was at 12:40. So after midnight. 11:40, so this was not good. But anyway, I got on the flight at 12:40 and flew to Chicago because it was not a direct flight. So a direct flight means no stopping right now. Popping in between but this was not a direct. I had to stop in Chicago and change. Unfortunately I missed my next flight because my first flight was late because it was delayed, I got to Chicago my next airplane already gone. It’s left. So I’m very very tired because I know sleeping that night and now I miss my plane I have to find another plane. So I go to American Airlines and I show them my boarding pass and they say oh, okay, they check their computer and they give me the next flight was like 4 hours later. So they give me a new boarding pass for the next for the new flight in four hours. So and then I had to wait in the Chicago airport for four hours and I have no sleep. I’m very very tired.I Tried to sleep. I laid down on the floor in the Chicago airport. I didn’t really sleep maybe a little bit a couple hours and then I got finally I couldn’t sleep so I decided to drink some coffee. So I went to Starbucks and got a big coffee and drink it and then finally I got on my last plane

and I arrived here in North Carolina. I think it was at about 4 o’clock in the afternoon and I rented a car and I drove to Chris’s house, but I was really really really tired. Of course exhausted because this whole long night and day without sleep in airports in airplanes truly terrible. So anyway, I came here and then I took a nap and really I had to look sleep for a whole the next day. I slept went to sleep and slept really late and Till I finally I felt better. So that’s that’s where I thought about the roach vacation story. I thought that we should write a story about traveling. So people can learn a little vocabulary like boarding pass. That’s a very common word very common phrase that you hear in the airports all the time. And but I was also just thinking about airplanes and travel a lot. So So that’s why that was on there. So in general then I arrived here in North Carolina. And this is where we have recorded all the lessons for flow English. So we’ve been recording at Chris’s house we have each of us has a laptop computer and we each have an expensive professional microphone and some recording software for computers and so for Wow over I guess it’s been over two weeks Now everyday we’re recording lessons. We write the stories and then rerecord the lessons and it’s been a lot of work. We’ve been working on my mind. My head is crazy because I’m just thinking about lessons and stories all the time. But you know, it’s also been fun. Chris is an old friends that we know each other. We have known each other for a long time. Chris and I met in 1994. We went to school together at the University of Georgia. We went to graduate school together master’s degree program. So since then we have known each other after we finished school after we finished our masters degrees. Actually we both worked at the 1996, Atlanta. Enter Olympics you both work there for the summer. We had summer jobs at the Olympics and then both Chris and I taught English in Korea together. So it was our first teaching jobs actually both of us. We both taught in Seoul Korea. anyone from Korea. I can tell you my neighborhood. I lived in young Jay dong. I lived in young Jay dong in Seoul Korea. Leah in this is in 1996 and 1997. It was my very first English teaching job and I was teaching little children little Korean children. In fact, they were they were great. They learned English so fast because little children learn very very fast and that experience I think it affected me seeing the children learn fast. Yeah, I started thinking. Why do adults have so much trouble right? Because , I was trying to learn a little Korean but it was so difficult for me. But my little children in my class. They’re learning English very very very fast after one month. My students were speaking only English in my class. Cause I had a rule no Korean. So after one month no Korean these little children could speak only English to me. It’s amazing. So, you know later I got another master’s degree. My second master’s degree is in English teaching English and I learned about this idea of learning languages and the differences between adults and children. There are there are different ideas about this some people think that children have a special ability in adults lose it that adults can’t learn in a natural way. Some people think this however other people including me think that adults can learn like children that we definitely can learn like children. Good research about this that in fact adults can do it. The problem is adults Don’t do it a children learn very naturally. How do children little children small children? Kindergarten first grade four years old 5 years old. How do they learn a new language? A Foreign language. Well, basically they listen basically they listen my little Korean students. Listen to me every day. They listen to me tell stories. They listen to me sing songs and they sang songs. Also we played games we did little picture games, but they mostly they listen they listen they listened I didn’t force them to speak. I didn’t say you

must speak. Okay, they I was relaxed. They could just listen. Listen. Listen, did they study grammar? My little four-year-old children? No, of course not we never studied grammar rules. Well, they couldn’t understand grammar rules, but they did learn grammar. They learn grammar from the stories. They learn grammar from listening to me. So they learned Natural grammar not textbook grammar, but what do adults do do adults learn this way USUALLY? No, what do adults in by adults. I mean middle school high school University and older. older children and adults learn very unnaturally. What do they do? They get text books and they study this difficult complicated rules; the past tense, the past Perfect, the present Perfect, the past perfect progressive, modal’s etc. Etc. And all these difficult grammar ideas. What do adults do also? adults try to speak too soon. They force themselves to speak. in an adult class. It’s on the first day day one the same middle school Japan. They won. They make this children. Say hello. How are you? Repeat after me. Hello. How are you? And the children say Well the middle school children say hello. How are you? And they say no no, no try it again. And they so it’s all speaking speaking speaking not listening. Listening to correct English. not listening to native speakers. not listening to funny stories. No, they are trying to speak immediately. So that’s what that’s the problem. That’s why adults cannot learn or do not learn the same as children. WHAT do adults need to do? well if you want to speak well, if you want to have natural English, you’ve got to listen, you got to focus on listening first. You gotta forget the grammar rules. focus on listening listening listening relax. be like a child. learn like a little small child. They don’t think about rules. Just listen to stories. Listen. Listen. when you can speak just speak. communicate. if you make a mistake, it’s okay. Don’t think about mistakes little children. Don’t worry about mistakes. Only adults are so serious. Ow I must not make a mistake.

. So try to be like a little child. That’s the best way to learn English. Okay. See you next time. Bye. Bye. This is AJ.
