Lesson 88 - Vocabulary Review- Colors & Foods
Hi everyone. I’m Jennifer from English with Jennifer. Are you learning English? You can study with my students Flavia and Andreia. Sometimes the ladies learn new things with me. Sometimes we review. We talk together, and Flavia and Andreia use the words and the grammar they know.
Remember to make time to review and practice. Here’s a rainbow game you can use to review colors and foods. You can talk about what you like to eat and what you don’t like. Listen. Hey ladies. Let’s start with a game. Okay?
This is a game about a rainbow. Rainbow. I love rainbows. Do you? No? I know…You know rainbows. Do you know rainbows? When I see rainbows, I love to take pictures. Look at that. This is near my house. Yeah. You like rainbows. Say, “We love rainbows.” Rainbows. Where do we see rainbows?
The sky. In the sky. When? So we see them in the sky and when? After… rain. After rain. After it rains. Yes. Okay. So after it rains, sometimes we see a rainbow. And when I see a rainbow, I always take a picture, I have pictures of rainbows. This rainbow is special. How many rainbows? Two. Yeah. Like a double. You can say “a double rainbow.” I was like, “Oh my gosh!” Yes. I took a picture.
Beautiful. Yeah, yeah. Beautiful. I think we have lots of rainbows in Massachusetts. It’s good. What colors are in the rainbow? You tell me. What colors? What’s the first color? Yellow? Red? Red. Orange. Yellow. Whoopsies! Yellow. I don’t remember. Green. Blue. Purple. Uh-huh. Purple. Well, yeah. Purple…violet.
Sometimes we say “violet.” But “purple.” So again… Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. Can you say them? Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. In the United States, we have different accents. People in one state speak differently from another.
I say orange (or inj). Sometimes you may hear orange (awr inj)…(ornj). So there’s different pronunciations. I say…I usually say orange (or inj). Yeah. In fast speech, I might say orange (ornj), but you’ll hear different pronunciations of “orange.” Okay. Think of fruits and vegetables. What fruits and vegetables are red? Strawberries. Okay. Let’s do…we’ll do fruits and vegetables.
For short, you can say “veggies.” Veggies. Did you know that? Fruits and veggies. Veggies are vegetable. Okay. So we could have strawberries…tomatoes. Uh, some say tomatoes… Are tomatoes fruits or vegetables? Fruit. I don’t know! I’m going to put them here and say, “I don’t know.” Maybe it’s a fruit. Maybe it’s a vegetable. Tomatoes. Um… uh, cranberries. Cranberries. Ooh yes.
Cranberries.I like cranberries. How about fruits, vegetables…which fruits or vegetables are orange? Carrots. Carrots! That’s a good one. Yeah. Orange. Orange! Yeah. You can eat an orange. Like orange juice. Fruits or vegetables that are yellow? Banana. Yep. I love bananas. Bananas. Lemons. Lemons. Yeah. Lemons. Pineapple?
Oh yeah! Pineapples. I love pineapples. Mango? Are mangoes yellow or orange? They’re in between. Yeah, but mangos. Yeah. Mangos. How about anything that’s green? Fruits or vegetables. Which fruits or vegetables are green? Lettuce. Avocado. How about, um, peppers?
Actually, we have green peppers, yellow peppers… orange peppers, red peppers. Peppers can be any of those colors. True. Lettuce, avocado… In the US…in American English and in the United States, we have lemons and limes. They’re different. Right? Lemons are yellow. Limes are green. Lemons. Limes. Yeah. Lime. So we have lemons and limes. So I think of a yellow lemon and a green lime.
They’re similar, though. Lemons and limes. Anything that’s blue? Oh yes! Fruit. Blueberries. Blueberries. No, I can’t think of any vegetables that are blue. No. Anything purple? Is anything purple? Grapes. Right. Oh yes. Grapes. Actually, what colors can grapes be? Right? Green.
We have green, red… Sometimes it’s like a light red, dark red. Usually when you go to the store and you see and the labels, the signs, they say “red grapes…green grapes.” But when you really look, there’s like red and purple. Hello. What about eggplant? Do you know eggplant? Eggplant.
Or eggplants. Eggplants are like this. And they’re big. And you can bake them. You can fry them. Eggplants. Eggplants are kind of purple. Right? A little purple. Yeah. Okay. Let’s say we’re hungry. It’s time to eat and let’s make a vegetable salad. What will we use? Lettuce. Carrots. Will we have peppers?
No. No? Well, how about on one side some peppers, and for Flavia – no peppers. Okay. Tomatoes. Yes, we can add tomatoes. Will we have avocado? No? A little? Okay. For me, avocado is fruit.
Oh. Here…avocado…many salads. In Brazil, never. It’s a fruit. It’s a fruit. Yeah. In the US, we like to mix fruits and vegetables. Yeah. And some of them, I don’t know. Like you go to the grocery store, and in the vegetable section, we see avocados and tomatoes. In my mind, I think “vegetables.” But maybe, yeah, they’re fruits.
I don’t really know. In Brazil, [we] usually eat avocado with sugar. Oh really? Yes. But avocados are healthy, and sugar’s not healthy. Sugar plus…lime. Just with a spoon? Yes. Not on bread? Juice (of) limes.
Lime juice. Sugar. So avocado, sugar, and lime juice. And you just mix it? Sometimes with milk. And eat it. Ah, no milk! With a spoon? I have to try. Regular milk? Coconut milk? Regular milk. Yeah. No milk! Mix it…in a blender? Yeah. In a blender. So do you eat it with a spoon or do you drink it?
Whatever you want. You say, “It doesn’t matter. Whatever you want.” Interesting. And it does it have a name? With the drink? No name? Maybe I’ll try it one day. All right. So if we have a vegetable salad, we’ll add avocado…a little bit. Lettuce, tomatoes, and carrots. Um, let’s have a fruit salad.
What will we put in our fruit salad? Fruit salad? Yeah. Cranberry. No? Yeah. Let’s make let’s make a fruit salad. Many fruits? Yes. Right. What will we put in our fruit salad? Strawberry, blueberry, orange juice - orange juice? Orange juice. Really? I was thinking orange slices. No. Orange juice. Yes.
Okay. Banana. Bananas. Pineapple. Bananas. Mangos. Okay. Sometimes grapes. Okay. I like fruits and vegetables together. So I like to put lettuce, tomatoes, carrots… Oh, cucumbers! I like cucumbers. What color are cucumbers? Green. Green. Mm-hmm. And then cranberries and maybe apples, maybe maybe pears. Pears? Pears are green on the outside. Pears. Yeah.
Pears. Ah, okay. They’re green on the outside, and they’re soft and sweet. Yeah, so lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, maybe apple slices, maybe pear slices, and then nuts. How do you say “nuts” in Portuguese? Like walnuts, almonds… Not almonds. I like nuts. Any nuts. Walnuts. “Castanha?” Maybe.
Is that what it is? Yes, all different kinds of nuts. Yes. I guess that’s cashews. Yeah. I like putting walnuts on my salad. Yeah, so there’s all kinds of salads you could make. Good. Repeat after me. We’ll review colors first. Red, orange, yellow, green blue, purple, and violet. Violet is a mix of blue and purple.
Violet. We can also talk about light colors and dark colors: light blue, dark blue, light green, dark green. What’s your favorite color? What color are the walls in your home? Maybe you like a color that’s not in the rainbow: white, black,, brown, gray. Again, repeat after me. We can review fruits and vegetables.
Let’s use plural nouns. Tomatoes, cranberries, cherries, grapes, oranges, mangoes, lemons, bananas, limes, grapes…again. We have green grapes and red grapes. Avocados, cucumbers. Some say “cukes” for short. Blueberries, eggplant.
How often do you eat a vegetable salad? Do you like fruit salads? Tell me in the comments. That’s all for now.
