Lesson 81 - Better, Best & Worse, Worst

Hi everyone. I’m Jennifer from English with Jennifer. Let’s study basic English together. You can learn with my students Flavia and Andreia. Look at our writing. Can you read our names? The first group is easy to read, right? The second group is a little hard. Do you know why?

In Group 1, we wrote with our right hand. In Group 2, we wrote with our left hand. Watch. It’s worse when Flavia writes with her left hand. It’s better when Andreia writes with her right hand because her left hand is worse. So the names in Group 1 look good. Group 1 is better. Group 1 is better than Group 2.

Group 2 is bad. Group 2 is worse. Group 2 is worse than Group 1. In English, we can talk about two things. One thing is good. Another thing can be better. One thing is bad. Another can be worse. Repeat after me. Good, better. Bad, worse. Let’s practice using these words with Flavia and Andreia.

So looking at the names, I can ask which one is better? Which or what. What’s better? What’s worse? Those can be our questions. What’s better? What’s worse? We’re here in Boston. We’re in Massachusetts. Your home is in Brazil. Let’s compare. Mm-hmm, right? There’s differences. What’s better?

What’s worse? The weather in Boston, the weather in Brazil. You could ask questions, and when you ask questions the first thing you say is, “What’s better?” “What’s better?” And then give a choice, A and B. 1 and two. What’s better, the weather in Boston or the weather in Brazil? Right?

Let’s ask Flavia that question. What’s better, the weather weather in Boston or in Brazil? I think it’s sunny. Yes, I know. In Boston, it’s raining a lot of the time. So if the weather in Brazil is better, it also means the weather in Boston is worse than [the] weather in Brazil. Yes. Worse Yeah, you’re right. The weather in Boston is worse than [the] weather in Brazil. Yeah.

Okay, this one can be hard: American music, Brazilian music. What’s the question? What’s better, the American music or the Brazilian music? And you could do without [the]. American music or Brazilian music. Brazilian music is better than American music. Yes, you need to say that!

I think for dancing Brazilian music is better than American music. I think, for dancing. Maybe, yeah, but when I’m driving, I think American music is better than Brazilian music because I want to sing. All right. How about. I know you ladies exercise. You exercise very well.

You can exercise at home or exercise at the gym, right? What’s the question? What’s better, exercis[ing] at home or exercis[ing] a the gym? And when we have the choice about exercising we use the - ing : What’s better, exercising at home or exercising at the gym? One more time.

What’s better, exercise at home. exercising. exercising at home or exercising at the gym? Exercis[ing] at the gym is better than exercis[ing] at home. Correct. Okay. That’s good. When we’re talking about “what,” we have to change “exercise” to “exercising.” Exercising at home is better. Or exercising at the gym is better. Exercising. So let’s hear the difference: exercise - exercise. Exercising - exercising. Exercise - exercise. Exercising - exercising. So what’s better?

Exercising at home or at the gym? Exercising at the gym. Exercising. Exercising at the gym is better. Why? Because at home I don’t like [it]. I don’t like it. I don’t want to. Yeah, and gym. also the gyms have, um, equipment. Like, they have bicycles. They have weights. Yeah.

So it could be very nice. So if exercising at the gym is better, we could also say exercising at home [is] worse than exercising at the gym. Yeah. Yeah, many people would agree. Okay. Today we have our phones. We have computers. We can do a lot with the internet. So we can shop at a store. We can shop online using the Internet. What’s the question? Why is shopping at a store better? Because I [am] walking, I see, I touch. Yeah, we walk around. We look at things. We try. try on. We try on clothes. Yeah, I agree. I like to touch. I like to see things.

Yeah, but sometimes I shop online. Sometimes. But I think shopping at a store is better too. Shopping online is better because it can be fast, but I think shopping online is worse because you can’t touch it. You can’t try it on. It’s true. Okay. When we talk about “better” and “worse,” we can use the word “than.” Andreia’s handwriting is better than mine. My handwriting is worse than Andreia’s.

Where does the word “than” go? Andreia’s handwriting is better than ours. Our handwriting is worse than hers. Can you write with your right hand? Can you write with your left hand? I’m going to ask some questions. Listen. The ladies will answer. Okay. So we have good and better /bad and worse. Okay. What if we go more? So good > better > . best. Bad > worse > . worst. So just like we have questions “What’s better? What’s worse?” the questions can also talk about “best” and “worst.” What’s the best?

Because you have free time. Yes. Yeah, so number two. What’s the worst day of the week? Monday. Yeah. We all think that Monday is worst. The worst. Right? So we say “the best, the worst.” The worse day is Monday. Right? It’s time for work, time for school. Wake up early. Because we can’t sleep, I think Monday is the worst. Okay. Three. What’s the best weather? The best weather.

Sunny. Sunny weather. Yes. Yeah. Sunny. I said sunny and warm. Sunny and warm because in Boston we can have sunny and cold. Yeah, sunny and warm, but not sunny and hot. Sunny warm and warm I think is the best weather. I agree. Yeah. Four. Do you remember the question I asked in number four?

Okay. So again, we have good, better, best. But we say “the best.” Bad, worse, worst. Worst or the worst. The worst. Very good. So remember when we use “worse” and “better” and we compare, we compare with “than,” right? I think, um, cleaning the bathroom is worse than washing the dishes. Washing the dishes is better than cleaning the bathroom. Cleaning in the bathroom.

Cleaning the bathroom is the worst. So when we use “best” and “worst,” we use THE – “the best, the worst,” right? Again, what’s the worst chore for you? Wash the dishes. washing. washing the dishes. So washing the dishes is the worst. The worst. You can say “the worst” or “the worst of all.” The worst of all. And what’s the best place to relax for you? The best place? Mm-hmm.

The best place relax, the best place to relax, to relax is at the park. You can say “is the park” or “at the park.” Yeah. So that’s the best. I think the park is lovely, but for me home is better than the park. But the park is nice. Remember we use “better” and “worse” for two people or two things.

We use “best” and “worst” for three or more people or three or more things. Is Flavia’s handwriting better than mine? I think so. Whose handwriting is the best? I think Andreia’s. Hers is the best. And whose handwriting is the worst? Mine. I think my handwriting is the worst. Make questions. Put the words in the correct order. What’s the best kind of food? What’s the best pet?

What’s the best place for a vacation? What’s the best kind of exercise? Note how we can use “the best” and “the worst” with or without a noun. What’s the best? What’s the worst? Or: What’s the best kind? What’s the worst kind?

What’s the best place? What’s the worst place? Now listen to the ladies’ answers. So let’s think. For you, what what’s the best? What’s the best kind of food? Brazilian food is the best. Let’s find out what Andrei thinks. What is the best? Italian food. Italian food is the best. What do you like?
