Shady Character – Point Of View Lesson

Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English and I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, in this lesson, I’m going to tell you the same story three different times but each time I tell you the story, I’m going to change the point of view for that story. So first I want to tell you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. So let’s start.

There is a man and his name is John and John lives in Los Angeles. And John is married and his wife’s name is Marie. And unfortunately, John and Marie have a problem. They are both out of work. Well, John has a brother and his name is Peter. And unfortunately, Marie does not like Peter. She doesn’t like Peter because Peter is a shady character.

Well, one day Peter invites John to have lunch with him at an Italian restaurant. And John does not want to go to the restaurant. He doesn’t want to go to the restaurant because he doesn’t have any money. But Peter offers to pick up the bill for lunch so John agrees to meet Peter at the restaurant for lunch.

So John meets peter at the restaurant for lunch and the food is delicious. Peter eats a pizza and John eats spaghetti. And John is unable to eat all of his spaghetti, it was just, it’s too much for him. So he gets a doggie bag to take home with him.

Well, John and Peter have a great time at lunch and as they are eating lunch, they have a great conversation about their family. But unfortunately, after that, there is a problem. You see, after Peter finishes eating lunch, he flies the coop. He flies the coop because he doesn’t want to pick up the bill for lunch. So John has to pick up the bill for lunch. John doesn’t have any money.

So John has to work in the kitchen at the restaurant all night long. Well, I forgot to tell you that John is an excellent cook. So that night he cooks all of the food at the restaurant and the owner of the restaurant loves the food so much that he hires John to be the head chef at the restaurant so John is no longer out of work.

Okay, so that’s the first story in this lesson. Remember now, in that story, I was telling you the story as if it is happening right now in the future. Next, I want to tell you the story as if it’s going to happen in the future, let’s say 41 years in the future, okay? So let’s start.

41 years from now, in the future, there will be a man and his name’s going to be John and John’s going to live in Los Angeles. And he’s going to be married and his wife’s name will be Marie. And unfortunately, John and Marie are going to have a problem. You see, John and Marie are both going to be out of work. Well, John’s going to have a brother and his name’s going to be Peter. But Marie isn’t going to like Peter. She isn’t going to like Peter because Peter is going to be a shady character.

Well, one day Peter is going to invite John to have lunch with him at an Italian restaurant and John isn’t going to want to go to the restaurant. You see, he isn’t going to want to go to the restaurant because he isn’t going to have any money. But Peter is going to offer to pick up the bill for lunch, so John’s going to agree to meet Peter at the restaurant for lunch.

Well, John is going to meet Peter at the restaurant for lunch and the food is going to be excellent. Peter is going to eat a pizza and John is going to eat spaghetti. And John is not going to be able to eat all of the spaghetti so he’s going to get a doggie bag to take home with him.

Well, both John and Peter are going to have a good time at lunch and as they are eating, they’re going to have a great conversation about their family. But then there’s going to be a problem. You see, after he finishes eating, Peter is going to fly the coop. He’s going to fly the coop because he isn’t going to want to pick up the bill for lunch. So John’s going to have to pick up the bill for lunch and John isn’t going to have any money to pay for lunch.

So John is going to have to work in the kitchen at the restaurant for the entire night. Well, John is going to be a great cook so that night at the restaurant, he’s going to cook all of the food and the owner of the restaurant is going to love the food so much that he’s going to offer John, he’s going to John, I mean, as the head chef at the restaurant. So John is no longer going to be out of work.

Okay, so that’s the second story that you just heard in this lesson. Now in that story, I told you the story as if it will happen in the future. Okay, so we have one more story in this lesson. Now in this next story, I’m going to tell you the story from John’s point of view and I’m going to tell you the story as if it’s already happened, okay? So as I tell the story, just pretend I’m John, okay? Let’s start.

Hello, my name is John and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago. You see, at that time I lived in Los Angeles and I was married and my wife’s name was

Marie. And unfortunately, at that time we had a problem. You see, we were both out of work. Well, I had a brother and his name was Peter. I still do have a brother and his name is Peter. And unfortunately, Marie did not like Peter because Peter was a shady character.

Well, one day Peter invited me to have lunch with him at an Italian restaurant and I didn’t want to go to the restaurant because I didn’t have any money. But Peter offered to pick up the bill for lunch, so I agreed to meet Peter at the restaurant for lunch.

So I met Peter at the restaurant and the food was delicious. Peter ate a pizza and I ate spaghetti. And I was unable to eat all of the spaghetti so I got a doggie bag to take home with me.

Well, both Peter and I really enjoyed having lunch together and while we were eating lunch, we had a great conversation about our family. But unfortunately, after that conversation there was a problem because right after Peter finished eating lunch, he flew the coop. Yes, Peter flew the coop because he didn’t want to pick up the bill for lunch so I had to pick up the bill for lunch. But I didn’t have any money.

So I had to work in the kitchen at the restaurant all night long. Well, I was a great cook, and I still am a great cook. So that night at the restaurant, I cooked all of the food and the owner of the restaurant loved the food so much that he hired me to be the head chef at the restaurant. So after that night, I was no longer unemployed. I was no longer out of work.

Okay, so that was the end of the third and final story in this lesson. Now in that story, I told you the story from John’s point of view and the story was told as if it had already happened in the past. So now that we’re at the end of the third story, that means we’re at the end of this lesson. So I want you to listen to this lesson every day for at least seven days. And as you listen to each story, just remember the point of view that the story is being told from and just try and understand what’s happening, okay?
