Hi I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English. And I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson.
Okay, in this lesson I’m going to tell you the same story three times. But each time I tell you the story, I’m going to change the point of view. So, first I’m going to start by telling you the story as if it’s happening right now, in the present. So, let’s start.
There is a tiger and his name is Michael. And Michael is a singer. But unfortunately, Michael has a problem. Michael loses his voice. Yeah, he loses his voice because he smokes too many cigarettes. Well, Michael needs to get his voice back, immediately, because Michael has a gig tonight.
But unfortunately, Michael doesn’t know what he needs to do to get his voice back. Well Michael’s mother is also a singer. So, Michael decides to ask his mother for advice. So, Michael calls his mother and he explains to her that he has lost his voice because he smokes too many cigarettes. And Michael’s mother tells Michael that she knows what he needs to do to get his voice back.
She tells him that he needs to do a shot of whiskey every hour until the time is gig starts. Well, Michael rarely drinks alcohol, but he is desperate to get his voice back. So he agrees to follow his mother’s advice. So that’s what he does. Michael follows his mother’s advice. He does a shot of whiskey every hour until the time is gig starts. And after he does just one shot of whiskey, he’s drunk. Yes
Michael is drunk after doing just one shot of whiskey because he’s a lightweight. But I have some good news, just 10 minutes before his gig starts, Michael gets his voice back and Michael brings down the house at his gig. Well, Michael is very happy because he brings down the house at his gig but the next day when he wakes up, he feels terrible. He is sick when he wakes up and he never wants to drink alcohol ever again. So, Michael vows never to smoke another cigarette because he never wants to lose his voice ever again.
Okay, so that’s the end of our first story in this point of view lesson. Now remember, in that story, I told you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. So next I want to tell you the story as if it will happen sometime in the future. Okay. so let’s begin.
47 years from now, in the future there will be a tiger and his name is going to be Michael. And Michael’s going to be a singer. And unfortunately, Michael’s going to lose his voice. He’s going to lose his voice because he is going to smoke too many cigarettes. Well, Michael is going to need to get his voice back immediately because he’s going to have a gig that night.
But unfortunately, Michael is not going to know what he needs to do to get his voice back. Well, Michael’s mother is also going to be a singer. So, Michael is going to decide to ask his mother for advice. So, Michael’s going to call his mother and he’s going to tell her that he lost his voice because he smokes too many cigarettes.
And Michael’s mother is going to tell Michael that she knows what he needs to do to get his voice back. Michael’s mother is going to tell Michael that he needs to do a shot of whiskey every hour until the time his gig starts.
Well, Michael is rarely going to drink alcohol but he’s going to be desperate to get his voice back. So, he’s going to agree to follow his mother’s advice. So, Michael’s going to follow his mother’s advice. He’s going to do a shot of whiskey every hour until the time his gig starts.
And after doing just one shot of whiskey, Michael’s going to be drunk. Yes, he’s gonna be drunk after just one shot of whiskey because Michael’s going to be a lightweight. Well, just 10 minutes before the start of his gig, Michael’s going to get his voice back and that night at his gig, he’s gonna bring the house down.
Well Michael’s going to be very happy that night. He is going to be very happy that night because you will have brought the house down at his gig. The next morning when he wakes up, he’s gonna feel terrible. He’s going to feel so sick; that he’s never going to want to have any alcohol to drink for the rest of his life. So, Michael is going to vow to never smoke another cigarette because never he’s never going to want to lose his voice ever again.
Okay so that is our second story in this mini story lesson. Sorry, in this point of view lesson. Now in that version of the story, I told you the story as if it will happen in the future. So, we have one more story in this point of view lesson. And this time I’m gonna tell you the story from Michael’s point of view; and I’m gonna tell you the story as if it’s already happened. Okay? As if it’s happened in the past.
So, you’re gonna have to pretend that I’m a tiger named Michael now, when I tell you the story. Alright, so let’s start.
Hello, I’m Michael; and I’m a tiger. And I want to tell you about a story that happened to me a long time ago. You see, at that time I was a singer and I had a problem. I lost my voice. You see I lost my voice because I smoked too many cigarettes.
Well, I needed to get my voice back immediately, because I had a gig that night. But I didn’t know what to do in order to get my voice back. Well, my mother was also a singer so, I decided to ask my mother for advice. So, I called my mother and I told her that I had lost my voice because I had smoke too many cigarettes.
Well, my mother told me that she knew what I needed to do in order to get my voice back. My mother told me that in order to get my voice back, I needed to do a shot of whiskey every hour until the time of my gig.
Well, I rarely drank alcohol but I was desperate to get my voice back. So, I agree to follow my mother’s advice. So that’s what I did. I followed my mother’s advice. I drank a shot of whiskey, alright? you could even say I drank a shot of whiskey, you could say I did a shot of whiskey every hour until the time that my gig started.
And after I did just one shot of whiskey, I was drunk. I was drunk after just one shot of whiskey because I was a lightweight. Well, I have some good news. I got my voice back just 10 minutes before the start of my gig. And that night at my gig, I brought the house down.
Well, after the gig, I was very happy because I brought the house down. But when I woke up the next morning, I felt terrible. I was so sick that I never wanted to drink alcohol ever again. So, I promise never to smoke another cigarette because I never wanted to lose my voice ever again.
Okay. So, that was our third and final time, telling the story in this lesson. And in that version of the story, I told you the story from Michael’s point of view, from Michael the tiger’s point of view and the story was told as if it had already happened.
So, that means that we are at the end of this point of view lesson. So watch and listen to this lesson every day for at least a week. And as you listen to each version of the story, I want you to just think about what’s happening. Try and understand what’s happening in the story, okay? Don’t try and memorize anything. Just listen and make sure you remember the point of view of the stories being told from. And I want you to listen to this every day, for at least one week because I want you to make sure that you learn this material deeply.
Alright, well that’s all for this point of view lesson then. I’ll see you next time.
