In The Doghouse – Point Of View Lesson

Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English and I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, so in today’s lesson I’m going to tell you the same story that you heard in the mini-story lesson, but I’m going to tell you that story from three different points of view. So first I want to tell you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. So let’s begin.

There is a monkey and his name is Jerry. And there is another monkey and her name is Elaine.

And Jerry and Elaine are married. And Jerry and Elaine love each other very much but they have a problem. Elaine is fed up. Yes, Elaine is fed up with cooking dinner every night. And Elaine is upset with Jerry because Jerry never cooks dinner. So Jerry is in the doghouse. He’s in the doghouse because he never cooks dinner.

Well, Elaine tells Jerry that she’s fed up on a Monday. And that day Elaine refuses to cook dinner.

So Jerry has to cook dinner. Yes, that’s right, Jerry has to cook dinner and he decides to cook fried chicken for dinner. But unfortunately, when Jerry is in the kitchen cooking he’s like a fish out of water. And he burns the chicken. That’s right, Jerry burns the chicken and after Jerry burns the chicken, Elaine leaves. Elaine goes to her mother’s house to eat dinner. So Jerry is still in the doghouse.

Well, the next day is Tuesday and Elaine refuses to cook dinner again. So Jerry decides to get takeout for dinner. And Jerry loves spicy food so he orders spicy Thai food for dinner. And when the food is ready, Jerry takes the food home to eat. But unfortunately, Elaine hates spicy food.

So when Jerry comes home with the spicy food, Elaine leaves. Yes, Elaine leaves. She goes to her sister’s house to eat dinner. So Jerry is still in the doghouse.

Well, the next day is Tuesday and once again Elaine refuses to cook dinner. So Jerry tells Elaine that he wants them to go out for dinner at a nice expensive restaurant. Well, when Elaine hears this she’s excited. She’s very happy because she wants to go out for dinner at a nice expensive restaurant. So that night Elaine dresses very nicely. She wears a very nice dress and she even puts on makeup.

And when Elaine is ready to go, Jerry and Elaine go to the restaurant. But unfortunately, Jerry does not take Elaine to a nice expensive restaurant, no. Jerry takes Elaine to McDonald’s, yes.

Jerry takes Elaine to McDonald’s and when they arrive at McDonald’s Elaine is upset so she leaves, yes. Elaine goes to her brother’s house to eat dinner. So Jerry is still in the doghouse.

Well, the next day is Thursday and Jerry does not want to be in the doghouse anymore but he doesn’t know what to do. So he calls his father. Jerry calls his father that day and he asks him what to do. Well, Jerry’s father tells Jerry to hire a cook to cook dinner each night. So that’s what Jerry does. Jerry hires a cook and his name is Andre. And Andre is an excellent cook.

Well, Elaine’s favorite food is Italian food. So that night for dinner Andre cooks a delicious Italian dinner. And Andre puts candles on the dinner table and he lights the candles and he turns the lights down low. So Jerry and Elaine have a very romantic dinner. And after dinner Elaine is very happy. And she isn’t angry at Jerry anymore. And Jerry is happy, too, because he isn’t in the doghouse anymore.

Okay, well that’s the end of our first story and that story was being told as if it’s happening right now in the present. Okay, so for the next story, I want to tell you the story as if it’s happening in the future, let’s say 17 years in the future. Okay, let’s start the story then.

Seventeen years from now in the future, there will be a monkey and his name will be Jerry. And there will be another monkey and her name will be Elaine. And Jerry and Elaine are going to be married. And they’re going to love each other very much. But unfortunately, they’re going to have a problem. Elaine is going to be fed up with cooking dinner every day. And she’s going to be upset with Jerry because Jerry is never going to cook dinner. So Jerry is going to be in the doghouse. Yes, that’s right. Jerry’s going to be in the doghouse because he’s never going to cook dinner.

Well, Elaine is going to tell Jerry that she is fed up on a Monday. And on that day Elaine is going to refuse to cook dinner. So Jerry is going to have to cook dinner. Yes, that’s right. Jerry’s going to cook dinner and he’s going to decide to make fried chicken. But unfortunately, when Jerry is in the kitchen cooking he is going to be like a fish out of water. So he’s going to burn the chicken.

Yes, Jerry’s going to burn the chicken. And after Jerry burns the chicken, Elaine’s going to leave.

She’s going to go to her mother’s house to eat dinner. So Jerry is still going to be in the doghouse.

Well, the next day’s going to be Tuesday and Elaine is going to refuse to cook dinner again. So Jerry is going to decide to get takeout for dinner. And Jerry is going to love spicy food. So Jerry’s going to order spicy Thai food for dinner. And when the food is ready, Jerry’s going to take the food home. But unfortunately, Elaine is going to hate spicy food. So after Jerry returns home with the spicy food, Elaine’s going to leave. Yes, Elaine’s going to go to her sister’s house to eat dinner. So Jerry is still going to be in the doghouse.

Well, the next night’s going to be Wednesday and once again Elaine is going to refuse to cook dinner. So Jerry is going to tell Elaine that he wants them to go out for dinner at a nice expensive restaurant. And when Elaine hears this she’s going to be very happy because she’s going to want to go to a nice expensive restaurant for dinner. Well, Elaine’s going to dress very nicely that night. She’s going to wear a dress and she’s going to put on makeup.

And after Elaine is finished getting ready, Jerry and Elaine are going to go to the restaurant. But unfortunately, Jerry isn’t going to take Elaine to a nice expensive restaurant, no. Jerry is going to take Elaine to McDonald’s. Yes, Jerry is going to take Elaine to McDonald’s and when they arrive at McDonald’s, Elaine is going to be very upset. So she’s going to leave. Yes, Elaine’s going to leave. She’s going to go to her brother’s house to eat dinner that night. So Jerry is still going to be in the doghouse.

Well, the next day is going to be Thursday and Jerry isn’t going to want to be in the doghouse anymore but he isn’t going to know what to do about it. So he’s going to call his father. Yes, Jerry’s going to call his father and he’s going to ask him what to do. Well, Jerry’s father is going to tell Jerry to hire a cook to cook dinner each night. So that’s what Jerry’s going to do. Jerry’s going to hire a cook and his name will be Andre and Andre is going to be an excellent cook.

Well, Elaine’s favorite food is Italian, it’s going to be Italian. And so Andre is going to cook a delicious Italian dinner that night. And Andre’s going to put candles on the dinner table and he’s going to light the candles and he’s going to turn the lights down low. So Jerry and Elaine are going to have a very romantic dinner. Okay, well that’s our second point of view story. In that story I told you the story as if it was happening 17 years in the future. Okay, so we have one more story left in this lesson. So in this story I’m going to tell you the story from Jerry’s point of view. And the story is going to be told as if it has already happened.

So the story’s going to be told as if it happened in the past, okay? So you’re going to have to pretend I’m Jerry, the monkey, when I tell you this story. So let’s start the story.

Hello, my name is Jerry and I’m a monkey and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to my wife, Elaine, and I. Now I want you to know that Elaine is a monkey also. And at the time of this story, Elaine and I were already married and we loved each other very much. But unfortunately, we had a problem. Elaine was fed up with cooking dinner every day. And she was upset with me because I never cooked dinner. So I was in the doghouse. Yes, I was in the doghouse because I never cooked dinner.

Well, Elaine told me that she was fed up with cooking dinner every day on a Monday. And that day she refused to cook dinner. So I had to cook dinner. Yep, that’s right, I had to cook dinner and I decided to make fried chicken for dinner. But unfortunately, when I was in the kitchen cooking, I was like a fish out of water. So I burned the chicken. Yes, I burned the chicken and after I burned the chicken, Elaine left. Yeah, Elaine went to her mother’s house to eat dinner. And I was still in the doghouse.

Well, the next day was Tuesday and Elaine refused to cook dinner again. So I decided to get takeout for dinner. And I loved spicy food so I ordered spicy Thai food for dinner. And when the food was ready, I took the food home. But unfortunately, Elaine hated spicy food. So after I returned home with the spicy food, Elaine left. Yes, Elaine went to her sister’s house to eat dinner. So I was still in the doghouse.

Well, the next day was Wednesday and once again Elaine refused to cook dinner. So I told Elaine that I wanted us to go out for dinner at a nice expensive restaurant. Well, Elaine was very happy when she heard this because she wanted to go out for dinner at a nice expensive restaurant. So Elaine dressed very nicely that night. She wore a very nice dress and she even wore makeup.

And when Elaine was finished getting ready, we went to the restaurant. But unfortunately, I didn’t take Elaine to a nice expensive restaurant. I took Elaine to McDonald’s. Yes, I took Elaine to McDonald’s and when we arrived at McDonald’s, Elaine was very upset. So she left. Yes, Elaine left. She went to her brother’s house to eat dinner that night. And so I was still in the doghouse.

Well, the next day was Thursday and I didn’t want to be in the doghouse anymore but I didn’t know what to do. So I called my father that day. I called my father and I asked him what to do.

Well, my father told me to hire a cook to make dinner each night. So that’s what I did. I hired a cook and his name was Andre. And Andre was an excellent cook.

Well, Elaine’s favorite kind of food was Italian food. So that night Andre made a delicious Italian dinner. And Andre put candles on the dinner table and he lit the candles and he turned the lights down. So Elaine and I had a very romantic dinner. And after dinner Elaine was very happy and she wasn’t angry at me anymore. And I was happy, too, because I wasn’t in the doghouse anymore.

Okay, well that brings us to the end of our third point of view story. So that means we’re at the end of this point of view lesson. So I want you to listen to this lesson every day for at least seven days. The reason I want you to listen for at least seven days is because I want you to learn this material deeply, okay? And as you listen to each story, I want you to think about the point of view that the story is being told from.

Is the story being told as if it’s happening right now? Maybe the story is being told as if it’s happening 17 years in the future. Or maybe you’re hearing the story told from Jerry’s point of view, as if it happened in the past. So I want you to think of the point of view that the story is being told from and I just want you to understand what’s happening in the story, okay?
