Juvenile Delinquent – Point Of View Lesson
Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English and I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, so in this lesson I’m going to tell you the same story from three different points of view. First, I want to tell you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. So let’s start.
There is a boy and his name is Andy. And Andy is 12 years old and unfortunately Andy is a juvenile delinquent and he likes to throw apples at things. For example, one day at school Andy throws an apple at his teacher’s head. And, of course, after he throws the apple at his teacher’s head, he is expelled from school.
Well, after Andy is expelled from school he doesn’t have anyone to play with each day. You see, he doesn’t have anyone to play with each day because all of his friends are in school during the day. So Andy is bored and he goes outside and he throws apples at cars. And it’s a very mean and dangerous thing to do but Andy is quite good at throwing apples at cars because he has a very strong arm.
Well, one day Andy throws an apple at a car and the driver of the car stops the car, gets out of the car, runs after Andy, and catches Andy. Now the driver of the car is named Bill and Bill is a baseball coach for the New York Yankees. And when Bill catches Andy, Andy is afraid that he is in a lot of trouble so he begs Bill not to call the police. He begs Bill to let him off the hook.
Well, Bill thinks that Andy has a good arm and he thinks that Andy can be a good baseball player.
He thinks that Andy has a strong arm is what I mean. But he thinks Andy can be a good baseball player so he agrees to let Andy off the hook if Andy plays baseball for the New York Yankees for one year. So Andy agrees to do that and that day he signs a contract to play baseball for the New York Yankees for one year. So Bill lets Andy off the hook.
Well, two days after Andy signs the contract he plays his first baseball game with the New York Yankees. And there is a good turnout for the game that day but no one at the game has ever seen Andy play baseball before that day. But that day Andy plays very well so he makes a name for himself as a great baseball player.
Well, Andy plays baseball with the New York Yankees for the entire year and he plays very well that year. In fact, he plays so well that he wins the award for being the best baseball player of the year. And because he wins the award, the Yankee pay Andy $10 million.
Well, after the Yankees give Andy the $10 million, Andy is rich but he is still a juvenile delinquent and he still likes to throw apples at cars. So Andy buys 1,122 pounds of apples and 10 new cars.
And after that time he only throws apples at his own cars.
Okay, so that’s the end of our first point of view story. In that story I told you the story as if it is happening right now in the present. Next, I want to tell you the story as if it will happen a long time in the future, let’s say 30 years from now in the future. So let’s start.
30 years from now in the future there will be a boy and his name’s going to be Andy. And Andy is going to be 12 years old and unfortunately Andy’s going to be a juvenile delinquent and he’s going to like to throw apples at things. For example, one day Andy is going to throw an apple at his teacher at school. He’s going to throw it at his teacher’s head. And after he throws the apple at his teacher’s head, he’s going to be expelled from school, of course.
Well, after Andy is expelled from school he isn’t going to have anyone to play with each day because all of Andy’s friends are going to be in school during the day. They’re going to be at school. So Andy is going to be bored and he’s going to go outside and he’s going to throw apples at cars. And it’s going to be a very mean and dangerous thing to do but Andy’s going to be quite good at it because Andy is going to have a very strong arm.
Well, one day Andy is going to throw an apple at a car and the driver of the car is going to stop the car, get out of the car, run after Andy and catch Andy. Now the driver of the car is going to be named Bill and Bill is going to be a baseball coach for the New York Yankees. Well, after Bill catches Andy, Andy is going to be afraid that he is in a lot of trouble so he’s going to beg Bill not to call the police. Andy is going to beg Bill to let him off the hook.
Well, Bill is going to think that Andy has a very strong arm and he’s going to believe that Andy can be a very good baseball player. So Bill is going to agree to let Andy off the hook if Andy plays baseball for the New York Yankees for one year. So Andy is going to agree to do that and that day Andy is going to sign a contract to play baseball for the New York Yankees for one year. So Bill is going to let Andy off the hook.
Well, two days after Andy signs the contract he’s going to play his first game with the New York Yankees. And there’s going to be a great turnout for the game. There’s going to be a good turnout, I should say, for the game that day. And unfortunately no one at the game will have ever seen Andy play baseball before that day. But Andy is going to play very well that day so he’s going to make a name for himself as a great baseball player.
Well, Andy’s going to play baseball with the New York Yankees for the entire year and he’s going to play very well for the entire year. In fact, he’s going to play so well that he will win the award for being the best baseball player that year. And because he wins the award, the Yankees are going to pay Andy $10 million, a lot of money.
Well, after the Yankees pay Andy the $10 million, Andy’s going to be rich but he’s still going to be a juvenile delinquent and he’s still going to like to throw apples at cars. So he’s going to buy 1,122 pounds of apples and 10 new cars and he will only throw apples at his own cars after that time.
Okay, so that’s the end of our second point of view story. Now in that story, I told you the story as if it was going to happen 30 years in the future, so a long time from now. So we have one more story in this lesson. Now in this point of view story, I’m going to tell you the story from Andy’s point of view and I’m going to tell you the story as if it has happened a long time in the past. So you have to pretend I’m Andy as I’m telling the story, okay? Alright, let’s start.
Hello, my name is Andy and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago in the past. You see, at that time I was just a 12-year-old boy and unfortunately I was a juvenile delinquent. Yes, I was a juvenile delinquent and I liked to throw apples at things. Let me give you an example. One day at school I threw an apple at my teacher’s head. And after I threw the apple at my teacher’s head, of course, I was expelled from school.
Well, after I was expelled from school I didn’t have anyone to play with during the day. You see, all of my friends were in school during the day. That’s why I didn’t have anyone to play with. So I was bored. So I went outside and I threw apples at cars. And it was a very mean and dangerous thing to do but I was quite good at it because I had a strong arm.
Well, one day I threw an apple at a car and the driver of the car stopped, got out of the car, ran after me, and caught me. Now the driver’s name was Bill and Bill was a baseball coach for the New York Yankees. And when Bill caught me I knew I was in a lot of trouble so I begged Bill not to call the police. I begged him to let me off the hook.
Well, Bill saw that I had a strong arm and he believed that I could be a good baseball player, even a great baseball player. So Bill agreed to let me off the hook if I played baseball for the New York Yankees for one year. So I agreed to do it and that day I signed a contract to play baseball for the New York Yankees for one year so Bill let me off the hook.
Well, two days after I signed the contract I played my first baseball game with the New York Yankees. And there was a good turnout for the game that day but no one had ever seen me play baseball before that day. But I played very well that day so I made a name for myself as a great baseball player.
Well, I played baseball for the New York Yankees for the entire year and I played very, very well that year. In fact, I played so well that I won the award for being the best baseball player of the year. And because I won the award the Yankees paid me $10 million.
Well, after the Yankees paid me $10 million, I was rich but I was still a juvenile delinquent who liked to throw apples at cars. So this is what I did. I purchased 1,122 pounds of apples and 10 new cars. And after that day I only threw apples at my own cars.
Okay, so that’s the end of our third and final story in this lesson. In that point of view story, the one you just heard, I told you the story as if it had happened in the past and the story was told from Andy’s point of view. So we’ve come to the end of this lesson and now I want you to listen to this lesson every day for at least seven days. I want you to do this because I want you to get a lot of repetition. So as you listen to each story just remember the point of view the story’s being told from and try to understand what’s happening in the story, okay?
Alright, that’s the end of this point of view lesson then so I’ll see you next time.
