Juvenile Delinquent – Mini-Story Lesson
Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English and I’d like to welcome you to this mini-story lesson. Okay, I want to start this lesson by telling you about some of the words and phrases that you will hear me use in the story for the lesson. Okay? So let’s start.
First is “juvenile delinquent.” So a juvenile delinquent is a young person who is very badly behaved. You can even say it’s a young person who commits crimes or what we would call a young criminal. And when I say a young person I mean a person between the ages of 10 and 17. When a person is 18, we don’t consider that person a juvenile delinquent anymore. That person’s an adult at that point. So let me give you an example. The policeman told Dan that his son was a juvenile delinquent after his son had stolen a police car. So what I’m saying is the policeman told Dan that his son was a young criminal after Dan’s son had stolen a police car.
Okay, so next is to “be expelled” or to “get expelled.” And you get expelled or you are expelled from a place or thing. And what it means is to be forced to leave and not allowed to return again. Now usually when I hear this word used, it’s used in reference to school. You hear about someone being expelled from school, which means the person’s not allowed to return to school. They’re forced to leave and not allowed to return to school. Here’s an example for you. After John hurt his teacher, he was expelled from school. Okay, so what I’m saying is after John hurt his teacher, he was forced to leave and not allowed to return again to school. He was expelled from school.
Okay, so next I have a great idiom for you and that idiom is to “let someone off the hook.” So if you let someone off the hook it means you free that person of any responsibility. And sometimes you let someone off the hook for something that person has done wrong. And in this case it can kind of be thought of as freeing someone from any punishment from what that person did wrong. But you can think of it the same way. You’re still freeing the person of a responsibility that person has or any responsibility.
Let me give you an example of this one, it’ll really help you understand it better. John was driving his car very fast and a policeman stopped him while he was driving his car. And normally when a person was driving too fast, the policeman would make the person pay a fine. But this policeman knew John. They were friends. So the policeman did not make him pay a fine. He let John off the hook, okay? So what I’m saying is the policeman freed John of any responsibility. He freed John of any punishment related to what he had done wrong, which was driving too fast. He let John off the hook.
Okay, so let’s move on. Next is a “good turnout.” And we say this with respect to an event. A good turnout at an event or a good turnout for an event. And what it means is a lot of people came to the event or a lot of people attended the event, okay? So turnout just refers to the number of people who came.
So a good turnout means a lot of people attended the event. A lot of people were at the event. Here’s an example for you. There was a good turnout for the president’s speech. Okay, so what I’m saying is a lot of people attended the president’s speech. There were a lot of people at the president’s speech.
Okay, so I have one more for you and this is another really good idiom. It’s to “make a name for yourself.” So if you make a name for yourself, it means that you are well-known and respected for something. Here’s an example for you. John made a name for himself as a great athlete when he won 10 Olympic gold medals. Okay, so John was well-known and respected as a great athlete after he won 10 Olympic gold medals. He made a name for himself as a great athlete.
Okay, so now I’m going to tell you a story but I’m also going to ask you a lot of questions as I tell you the story. So when I ask you a question, I want you to answer that question quickly. Okay, just tell me the first answer that you think of.
And don’t worry about making a mistake because you’re going to listen to this lesson many times and so you’ll have a lot of repetition. So if you make a mistake this time, you probably will not make the same mistake the next time you listen to this lesson because you will have had more repetition by then.
And also when you answer these questions, I want you to answer loudly and confidently, okay? Pretend that you’re trying to allow the people who live next door to you to actually hear you answer, okay? Speak loudly. Okay, well it’s time for our story then so let’s begin.
There was a boy and his name was Andy. And Andy was 12 years old and unfortunately Andy was a juvenile delinquent. Yes, Andy was a juvenile delinquent and he liked to throw apples at things. Now let me tell you about the driver of the car. The driver of the car was named Bill and Bill was a coach. He was a baseball coach for the New York Yankees.

And if you really do not have someone to tell the story to, just say the story to yourself but say it loudly, okay? Don’t just think about it in your mind, say it out loud. And I want you to listen to this lesson every day for at least seven days so you get a lot of repetition.
