Time Machine – Point Of View Lesson
Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English and I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, so in today’s lesson, I’m going to tell you the same story from three different points of view. First, I want to tell you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. So let’s start.
There is a man and his name is John and John wants to travel back in time to the year 1977. He wants to travel back in time to the year 1977 because he wants to meet Bob Marley. You see, Bob Marley is John’s favorite singer. But unfortunately, John is unable to travel back in time because he does not have a time machine.
Well, John needs a time machine so he goes to a store to buy a time machine and there are a lot of time machines at the store. But unfortunately, all of the time machines at the store are rip offs so John does not buy a time machine from the store.
Well, after John leaves the store he sees his friend Joe and he tells Joe that he wants to buy a time machine. Well, Joe has a time machine and he is selling it. Joe is selling his time machine for $234,000. Well, John does not have $234,000 so he haggles with Joe over the price. But unfortunately, Joe does not budge on the price so John does not buy the time machine from Joe.
Well, John still wants to travel back in time to the year 1977 because he still wants to meet Bob Marley. And he is unable to buy a time machine so he builds one. Yes, that’s right. John builds a time machine and it takes him 7 years to build it and it costs $76,000 to build. And after he builds the time machine he is able to travel back in time. But unfortunately, before he travels back in time he gets cold feet. Yes, John gets cold feet so he does not travel back in time.
Well, I have some good news for you about John. One year after John builds the time machine, he gets the courage to use it and he does use it. He uses the time machine to travel back in time to the year 1977. And he meets Bob Marley and Bob Marley asks John to join his band. So John joins Bob Marley’s band and he has so much fun that he stays. He never returns to the present time.
Okay, so that’s the end of our first point of view story. Now in that story I told you the story as if it is happening right now in the present. Next I want to tell you the story as if it will happen sometime in the future. So let’s start.
Sometime in the future, okay, let’s say 42 years from now in the future, there will be a man and his name is going to be John. And John is going to want to travel back in time to the year 1977. He’s going to want to do that because he’s going to want to meet Bob Marley. You see, Bob Marley is going to be his favorite singer. But unfortunately, John is not going to be able to travel back in time because he isn’t going to have a time machine.
Well, John’s going to need a time machine so he’s going to go to the store to buy one and there will be a lot of time machines at the store. But unfortunately, all of the time machines at the store are going to be a rip off. They’re all going to be rip offs. So John is not going to purchase a time machine at the store.
Well, after John leaves the store he’s going to see his friend Joe. And Joe is going to have a time machine and he’s going to be selling his time machine. He’s going to be selling his time machine for $234,000. Well, John isn’t going to have $234,000 so he’s going to haggle with Joe over the price. But Joe will not budge on the price so John is not going to buy the time machine from Joe.
Well, John is still going to want to travel back in time to the year 1977 because he’s still going to want to meet Bob Marley. But he’s going to be unable to purchase a time machine so John’s going to build one. Yes, John’s going to build a time machine and it’s going to take him 7 years to build and it’s going to cost $76,000 to build. And after John builds the time machine he will be able to travel back in time. But unfortunately, John is going to get cold feet before he travels back in time so he isn’t going to do it. He isn’t going to travel back in time.
Well, one year after John builds the time machine, he’s going to have the courage to use it. And he is going to use it. He’s going to use the time machine to travel back to the year 1977 and he’s going to meet Bob Marley. And Bob Marley is going to ask John to join his band. John’s going to say yes and he’s going to have so much fun that he’s going to stay. John will never return to the present time.
Okay, that’s our second point of view story. Now in that story I told you the story as if it will happen sometime in the future, I think I said 42 years in the future. So I have one more point of view story for you in this lesson. In this one I’m going to tell you the story from John’s point of view and I’m going to tell you the story as if it’s already happened in the past. So let’s start the story.
Hello, my name is John and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago. You see, at that time I wanted to travel back in time to the year 1977 because I wanted to meet Bob Marley. You see, Bob Marley was my favorite singer, that’s why I wanted to meet him. But unfortunately, I was unable to travel back in time because I didn’t have a time machine.
Well, I needed a time machine so I went to the store to buy a time machine. And at the store there were a lot of different time machines but all of the time machines were rip offs so I did not buy a time machine at the store.
Well, after I left the store I saw my friend Joe and Joe had a time machine. And he was selling it. Joe was selling his time machine for $234,000. Well, I didn’t have $234,000 so I haggled with Joe over the price. But Joe did not budge on the price so I didn’t buy the time machine from Joe.
Well, I still wanted to travel back in time to the year 1977 because I still wanted to meet Bob Marley. And I was unable to purchase a time machine so I built one. I built a time machine. It took me 7 years to build and it cost $76,000 to build. And after I built the time machine I was able to travel back in time. But unfortunately, before I traveled back in time I got cold feet. Yes, I did, I got cold feet so I didn’t go. I did not travel back in time.
Well, one year after I built the time machine I had the courage to use it. So I used the time machine to travel back to the year 1977. And I met Bob Marley and Bob Marley asked me to join his band. So I joined Bob Marley’s band and I had a lot of fun. So, I stayed. I never went back to the present time.
Okay, so that was our third and final point of view story for this lesson. In that story I told you the story from John’s point of view and you heard the story as if it had already happened in the past. So I want you to listen to this lesson every day for at least 7 days. Now, you may need to listen to it even longer than 7 days. The goal here is to learn the material deeply.
So listen to each one of these stories and as you listen to it remember what the point of view for the story is, okay? And also try to just understand what’s happening in the story. Don’t try and memorize the words or anything. If you listen to this lesson enough times, you’ll start to understand how the words change as the point of view changes for the story.
Okay, well that’s all for this point of view lesson then. I’ll see you next time.
