Personal Vision VIP – POV
Hello, this is AJ. Welcome to the point-of-view stories for this month’s lesson set. Now, in the point-of-view stories, of course, I will tell the same mini story again, but I change it a little bit. Sometimes we tell the story from the present, sometimes from the future, sometimes from a different point of view.
Let’s start. Let’s tell it from the present first. So here we go.
There is a cat named Felix. There is a cat named Felix and he is full of regrets about his life. He feels he should’ve gone to college. In fact, he constantly says to himself “If I’d gone to college, I would have a stable career now. I should’ve gone to college.” But that is not his only regret. He also feels he should’ve gotten married. He feels he should’ve gotten married because he’s lonely and so he says to himself constantly “If I’d gotten married, I wouldn’t be lonely now. I should’ve gotten married.” And that wasn’t his only regret, you see? That isn’t his only regret. He also feels he should have traveled more. He regrets not traveling. He says to himself “If I’d traveled more, I wouldn’t be bored now. I should’ve traveled.”
Well, Felix is miserable. He’s not happy. He is not happy because he’s full of regrets about his life and finally he decides to change this attitude. He decides to live now. He says to himself “I shouldn’t have regrets. I should live now.” And he does. He enrolls in online courses. He starts to date women and he books (he buys) a ticket for around the world trip.
Okay, that’s the end of version one. That’s in the present. You can hear even sometimes I want to go back to the past and I correct myself. So you don’t need to worry about what is the correct tense. There’s no correct verb tense. As you can see, we can tell the same story in several different verb tenses. It just depends on the point of view you have, so just relax about that.
Now let’s imagine that this is going to happen in the future. Now, normally, we don’t tell an entire story in the future. We don’t normally do that, but I will do it to help you get more practice with the future. So we can imagine I’m dreaming about this, that I had a vision, that I’m imaging it will happen in the future. So I will tell the entire story in the future. Here we go.
In the future there will be a cat named Felix and he’s gonna be full of regrets. (Our longtime VIP members know that “gonna” means going to. If you’re new, “gonna” means going to. We use it in casual speech. We do not use it in writing really.) So there’s gonna be a cat, his name is gonna be Felix, he’s gonna be full of regrets and he will think about his regrets all the time.
See, he’s gonna feel that he should have gone to college, for example. He’ll (“ll”, “ll”, “ll” hear the ‘ll’? That’s future.) He’ll say to himself constantly “I should’ve gone to college. If I’d gone to college, I would have a good career now. I would have a lot of money now. I should’ve gone to college.” But that won’t be his only regret. “Won’t” means will not. We also use it for the future.
He’ll also regret not getting married. He’ll say to himself constantly “I should’ve gotten married. If I’d gotten married, I wouldn’t be lonely now. I should’ve gotten married.” Yes, he’ll say this to himself constantly because this cat in the future will be lonely. That won’t be his only regret, he’ll have more. He’ll also regret not having traveled. He’ll say to himself “Ah, I should’ve traveled. If I’d traveled, I wouldn’t be bored now. I should have traveled.”
So in the future this cat will be bored, he’ll be lonely and he’ll be poor. He’ll have a lot of regrets. He’s constantly gonna think about these regrets. He’s constantly gonna think about his past life and all the mistakes he made. Until finally one day in the future he’ll decide to change his life. He’ll decide to live in the moment. He’ll decide to live fully and he’ll (“ll” again) say to himself “I shouldn’t have regrets. I should live now.” After that, he’ll enroll in online courses, he’ll start to date women and he’ll book a ticket for around the world trip.
Okay, that is the end of that version of the story, the future version. We have one more version and that version is first person. We call it first person. “First person” is when you talk about yourself. So imagine that I am Felix the cat and I am talking about my own life. That’s first person. We say I, I, I. When you say I, I, I, I is the subject, that is called first person. So imagine I am Felix, I am talking about my life. Let’s start.
Hello, I am Felix the cat and I am full of regrets about my life. I regret everything in my life. I should have done so many things, but I didn’t. You know I should’ve gone to college. If I’d gone to college, I would have a stable career now and I would have a lot of money. I should’ve gone to college, but I didn’t. I never went to college. I regret it.
And, you know, I’m lonely now and the reason is I didn’t get married. I should’ve gotten married. If I had gotten married, I wouldn’t be lonely now. I should’ve gotten married. But that’s not all, I’m also bored. You know if I had traveled, I wouldn’t be bored now. I should have traveled. If I had traveled, I would be living an exciting life. I should have traveled.
Aaaahhh, but you know, maybe I shouldn’t have all of these regrets. Maybe I shouldn’t regret everything in my life. In fact, I should live now. I shouldn’t have anymore regrets. I should live fully now and I’m going to. I will enroll in online course and constantly learn.
I’ll start to date women and have fun and have a great social life and I’m gonna book a ticket for around the world trip.
And that is the end of the third version. Now, you hear in the third version that I’m talking for myself as if it’s happening now, as if I’m Felix and it’s happening now. So I’m using the present a lot and at the end I’m using the future. So, again, you don’t need to worry about verb tenses, sometimes we mix them. Just get a feeling for them. How do you do that? Just by listening to these stories every day and each month you get new ones and in several months, four or five, six months or more, you will start to feel the English grammar.
Instead of thinking about thousands of rules, you’ll start to feel what is correct, you’ll feel the meaning and then after a few more months, you’ll start to use the grammar more correctly as you speak without thinking. So just listen to these stories every day for seven days, 10 days or more, up to you.
That’s the end of our POV (point-of-view) stories for this month. I will see you next time, bye-bye.
