Airplane Pilot - Point Of View Lesson
Hello. I am Joe Weiss, one of the directors of Learn Real English and I would like to welcome you today to the point of view lesson for the Advanced Conversation Club. So as you may already know, I will tell you three different versions of the story that we heard in the mini-story lesson. And as you listen to these stories I want you to notice how the words change. I don’t want you to pay attention to the grammar, but just notice how the words change as we change the point of view. And I think that this will really help you to learn grammar without you having to even think about it. You’ll just kind of learn it automatically.
Okay, so in this first story I’m going to tell you, I’m going to tell the story as if it is happening right now, in the present. So, are you ready? Okay, I know I’m ready so let’s start with the first story.
There is a bear and the bear’s name is Bob. Now Bob wants to be an airplane pilot. Bob is unable to go to school to learn how to be an airplane pilot. He is unable to go to school because he does not have enough money to pay for school.
Well, Bob loves food. And when Bob eats, he always pigs out. After Bob eats a meal there are never any leftovers. Now Bob eats so much food that he gains a lot of weight. He gains a lot of weight because he eats so much food. He gains 311 pounds, a lot of weight! So Bob’s mom is very worried about Bob. So she asks Bob to shed some pounds. But Bob refuses.
Well, I have some more information about Bob. Bob loves seafood. And Bob has a brother named Charlie. And Charlie, too, loves seafood. But Bob’s mother does not like seafood. But she does love chicken.
Well, there is this one day where Bob and Charlie go to a seafood restaurant. And they arrive at the restaurant at 5:07 p.m. And the name of the restaurant is The Delicious Fish. Well, when Bob arrives at the restaurant, he is famished. He is so hungry that he eats all of the food in the restaurant. But he still is not full. So then he eats the plates that are on the table.
Well, that night at the restaurant Bob meets Barack Obama. And Barack Obama tells Bob that he wants him to be his airplane pilot. And Barack Obama gives Bob $5,678 and Bob is to use this money to pay for school so he can learn how to be an airplane pilot. So Bob is very excited. He finally has enough money to pay for school.
So the next day Bob goes to an airplane pilot school. And when he arrives at the school he tries to get into the airplane. But he is unable to get into the door to the airplane. You see, he is too fat to fit in the airplane because he has gained so much weight. So the teacher at the school tells Bob that he has to lose 321 pounds. And then he can become an airplane pilot.
Well, Bob is very upset because he wants to be an airplane pilot. So he decides to change his diet. He changes his diet. He only eats 3 small meals a day. And he never pigs out. And after only 3 months, Bob loses 323 pounds, a lot of weight. And then he aces his airplane pilot exam.
And now he’s an airplane pilot and he flies Barack Obama all over the world.
Okay, so that’s our first story. I was telling that story as if it was happening right now in the present.
Now, I’m going to tell you the story as if it’s happening 5 years from now, so 5 years in the future. Okay, let’s start.
Five years from now, there will be a bear and the bear’s name will be Bob. Now Bob is going to want to be an airplane pilot. But Bob is going to be unable to go to school to learn how to be an airplane pilot. You see, Bob will never have enough money to be able to pay for school. So he’s never going to be able to have enough money to pay for school.
Well, Bob is going to love food. And anytime Bob will eat, he will pig out. Bob will never leave any leftovers after he eats a meal. After he’s going to eat a meal there will never be leftovers.
Well, Bob will gain a lot of weight. He will gain 311 pounds, a lot of weight! And his mom is going to be very worried. So she is going to ask Bob to shed some pounds. But Bob’s going to refuse.
Okay, well, I have some more information about Bob. Bob is going to love seafood. And he’s going to have a brother named Charlie. And Charlie is going to love seafood, too. But Bob’s mom is never going to love seafood. She’ll love chicken though.
Well, one day, 6 years from now, Bob and Charlie are going to go to a seafood restaurant. And they’re going to arrive at the restaurant at 5:07 p.m. And the name of the restaurant will be The Delicious Fish. So Bob will be famished when he arrives at the restaurant. Bob will be so hungry that he’s going to eat all of the food in the restaurant. But he still will not be full. So then he’s going to eat the plates that are on the table.
Well, that night at the restaurant, Bob’s going to meet Barack Obama. And Barack Obama is going to tell Bob that he wants him to be his airplane pilot. And Barack Obama is going to give Bob $5,678 and the money will be so Bob can pay for school and then he will be able to learn how to be an airplane pilot. So Bob’s going to be very excited because he will finally have enough money to pay for school.
So Bob’s going to go to an airplane pilot school the next day. And he will try to get into an airplane, of course. But he’s going to be unable to fit in the door to the airplane. You see, he’s going to be too fat to fit in the airplane. So Bob’s teacher at the school is going to tell him to lose 321 pounds. And then he will be able to be an airplane pilot.
So Bob will be very upset. He’ll be super upset because he’ll want to be an airplane pilot. So what he will do is he will change his diet so he can lose some weight. He will change his diet. He will only eat 3 small meals each day. And he will never pig out anymore. Well, after only 3 months, Bob will have lost 323 pounds, more weight than the teacher had told him to lose. And he’s going to ace his airplane pilot exam. Then he will become an airplane pilot. And he will fly Barack Obama all over the world.
Okay, so that was the end of our second story. Remember now, in that second story, I was telling you the story as if it was happening sometime in the future, so far away from now, a long time from now.
Okay, now it is time for our third and last story. I’m now going to tell you the story from Bob’s point of view. So you now have to pretend that I am Bob and that I am a bear, of course. Okay, are we ready?
Here we go.
I am a bear and my name is Bob. And I have always wanted to be an airplane pilot. But I have been unable to go to school to learn how to be an airplane pilot. I have been unable to go to school because I have never had enough money to pay for school.
Well, I love food. Whenever I eat a meal, I always pig out. And after I eat any meal, there are never any leftovers. Well, I had gained a lot of weight because I always pigged out. I had gained 311 pounds. And my mother had become very worried. So she had asked me to shed some pounds.
But I refused.
Well, I have some more information. I love seafood. I have always loved seafood. And I have a brother named Charlie. And he, too, has always loved seafood. Now my mother has never loved seafood. But she has always loved chicken.
Well, one day my brother Charlie and I went to a seafood restaurant. And we arrived at the restaurant at 5:07 p.m. And the name of the restaurant was The Delicious Fish. Well, when Charlie and I arrived at the restaurant, I was famished. I was so hungry that I ate all of the food in the restaurant. But I still wasn’t full. So then I ate the plates that were on the table.
Well, later that night at the restaurant, I met Barack Obama. And Barack Obama told me that he wanted me to be his airplane pilot. Then he gave me $5,678 and he gave me the money so I could pay for school and learn how to be an airplane pilot. So, as you can imagine, I was very happy. I finally had enough money to pay for school.
So the next day I went to an airplane pilot school. And once I arrived at the airplane pilot school, I tried to get in the airplane. But I was unable to get in the door to the airplane. You see, I had gained so much weight that I did not fit in the airplane. I was too fat. So the teacher at the school told me that I had to lose 321 pounds and then I could learn to be an airplane pilot.
Well, as you can imagine, I was very upset. Because I had finally had enough money to pay for school but I could not fit in the airplane. So I changed my diet. After that time I only ate 3 small meals each day. And I never pigged out. And after only 3 months, I had lost 323 pounds. And then I aced my airplane pilot exam. And now I fly Barack Obama all over the world.
Okay, so that’s the end of our third story. So you know what that means. That means that we have finished the point of view lesson. So remember what I told you at the beginning of the lesson. I want you to listen to each story and I want you to notice how the words in the story change. And this will help you learn grammar. It is a very powerful technique.
Okay, that’s all for now. I’ll see you next time.
