Birthday Suit – Point Of View Lesson

Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English. And I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, I’m going to start today’s lesson by telling you the same story that you heard in the mini-story lesson, but this time I’m going to tell you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. So let’s start.

There is a man and his name is Charlie. And Charlie lives in New York. And unfortunately Charlie is an outsider. Charlie is an outsider because he is always in his birthday suit. When Charlie goes to the store, he’s in his birthday suit. When Charlie goes to the library, he’s in his birthday suit. And when Charlie goes to work, he’s in his birthday suit.

You see, Charlie is always in his birthday suit and that’s why he’s an outsider. And, in fact, Charlie is the only person in all of New York who is always in his birthday suit.

Well, Charlie is a waiter and he is a very good waiter. In fact, Charlie is the best waiter in all of New York. And one day Charlie gets a job at an Indian restaurant. And when Charlie gets the job he is very excited because Charlie loves Indian food.

Well, unfortunately, the first day that Charlie works at the restaurant, he gets canned. Yes, Charlie gets canned because the customers do not want to be served by a man in his birthday suit.

Well, after Charlie gets canned, he’s upset. So he calls his girlfriend. And Charlie’s girlfriend’s name is Sara. And Sara knows that Charlie is upset so Sara invites Charlie to have dinner with her and her father. Well, Charlie has never met Sara’s father so he agrees to have dinner with them. He accepts Sara’s invitation.

Well, Charlie walks to Sara’s house and when he arrives at her house, he knocks on the door.

And Sara’s father answers the door. But Sara’s father does not allow Charlie to come in the house. No, he does not allow Charlie to come in the house because Charlie is in his birthday suit.

So Charlie leaves. And after Charlie leaves, Sara’s father tells Sara that she is not allowed to date Charlie anymore. So that night Sara breaks up with Charlie.

Well, after Sara breaks up with Charlie, Charlie is down in the dumps. And he knows he needs a change in his life so he decides to leave New York. And Charlie has a brother who lives in Texas.

So Charlie starts to drive to Texas. And he drives for 14 hours and then his car breaks down.

Well, Charlie’s car breaks down in front of a restaurant. So he goes into the restaurant and there are 12 people in the restaurant. And all of them are in their birthday suits. Well, that night Charlie makes a lot of new friends at the restaurant and he has a lot of fun. And the next day Charlie’s car is fixed. But he decides not to continue driving to Texas.

You see, the owner of the restaurant offers Charlie a job as a waiter and he tells Charlie that he’s allowed to work in his birthday suit. So Charlie accepts the job offer and for the first time in his life Charlie does not feel like an outsider.

Okay, so that is the end of our first point of view story. Next, I want to tell you the same story but this time I want to tell you the story as if it is happening in the future, okay? So let’s say three years in the future.

Okay, let’s start the story.

Three years in the future there will be a man and his name is going to be Charlie. And Charlie’s going to live in New York. And Charlie is going to be an outsider. Yes, Charlie’s going to be an outsider because he’s always going to be in his birthday suit. When Charlie goes to the library, he’s going to be in his birthday suit. When Charlie goes to work, he’s going to be in his birthday suit. And when Charlie goes to the store, he’s also going to be in his birthday suit.

You see, Charlie is always going to be in his birthday suit and that’s why he’s going to be an outsider. In fact, Charlie is going to be the only person in all of New York who is always in his birthday suit.

Well, Charlie is going to work as a waiter and he is going to be a very good waiter. In fact, he’s going to be the best waiter in all of New York. And one day Charlie is going to get a job at an Indian restaurant. And Charlie’s going to be very excited to get the job because Charlie is going to love Indian food.

Well, unfortunately, the first day that Charlie works at the Indian restaurant, he is going to get canned. Yes, Charlie is going to get canned because the customers are not going to want to get served by a man in his birthday suit.

Well, after Charlie gets canned, he’s going to be sad. He’s going to be upset. So he is going to call his girlfriend. And Charlie’s girlfriend’s name is going to be Sara. And Sara is going to know that Charlie is upset. So she is going to invite Charlie to have dinner with her and her father. And Charlie will never have met Sara’s father so he’s going to accept the invitation to have dinner with them.

Well, Charlie’s going to walk to Sara’s house and when he arrives at her house, he’s going to knock on her door. And Sara’s father is going to answers the door. And unfortunately Sara’s father is not going to allow Charlie to come in the house. Yeah, Sara’s father is not going to allow Charlie to come in the house because Charlie’s going to be in his birthday suit. And so Charlie’s going to leave. And after Charlie leaves, Sara’s father is going to tell Sara that she’s not allowed to date Charlie anymore. So Sara’s going to break up with Charlie.

Well, after Sara breaks up with Charlie, Charlie is going to be down in the dumps. And he’s going to need a change in his life so he’s going to decide to leave New York. Yes, Charlie’s going to decide to leave New York. And Charlie’s brother is going to live in Texas. So Charlie is going to start to drive to Texas. And he’s going to drive for 14 hours and then his car’s going to break down. Poor Charlie.

Well, Charlie’s car is going to break down in front of a restaurant. So Charlie’s going to go inside the restaurant and there will be 12 people in the restaurant when he goes into the restaurant. And all 12 people are going to be in their birthday suits. Well, that night at the restaurant Charlie is going to make a lot of new friends. And he’s going to have a lot of fun. And the next day, Charlie’s car is going to be fixed. But Charlie isn’t going to continue driving to Texas, no.

You see, the owner of the restaurant is going to offer Charlie a job as a waiter. And he’s going to tell Charlie that he’s allowed to work in his birthday suit. So Charlie’s going to accept the job offer and for the first time in Charlie’s life he isn’t going to feel like an outsider.

Okay, so that’s the end of our second point of view story. Now in that story, I told you the story as if it was happening in the future, three years in the future actually. Okay, so next I want to tell you the story from Charlie’s point of view. And when I tell you the story, I’m going to tell you the story as if it has already happened, okay? So you’re going to have to pretend I’m Charlie. Okay. So let’s start the story.

Hello, my name is Charlie and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me in the past. You see, at that time I lived in New York. And unfortunately I was an outsider. Yes, I was an outsider because I was always in my birthday suit. When I went to the store, I was in my birthday suit. When I went to work, I was also in my birthday suit. And when I went to the library, I was in my birthday suit.

You see, I was always in my birthday suit and that’s why I was an outsider. I was the only person in all of New York who was always in his birthday suit.

Well, I was a waiter at that time and I was a very good waiter. I was an excellent waiter actually. In fact, I was the best waiter in all of New York. And one day I got a job in an Indian restaurant. And I was very excited when I got the job because I loved Indian food.

But, unfortunately, the first day that I worked at the restaurant, I got canned. Yes, I got canned. I got canned because the customers did not want to be waited on by a man in his birthday suit.

Well, after I got canned, I was upset. So I called my girlfriend. Now my girlfriend’s name was Sara. And Sara knew that I was upset so she invited me to have dinner with her and her father.

Well, I had never met Sara’s father before so I accepted her invitation to have dinner with them.

Well, I walked to Sara’s house and when I arrived at her house, I knocked on the door. And Sara’s father answered the door. But unfortunately Sara’s father would not allow me in the house. He would not allow me to come in the house. You know why he would not allow me to come in the house? He would not allow me to come in the house because I was in my birthday suit. Well, so I left. Yeah, I left. And after I left Sara’s father told Sara that she was not allowed to date me anymore. And that night Sara broke up with me.

Well, after Sara broke up with me, I was down in the dumps. And I knew that I needed a change in my life. So I decided to leave New York. Yes, I decided to leave New York. And my brother lived in Texas. So I started to drive to Texas. But unfortunately after I drove 14 hours, my car broke down. Yes, my car broke down.

My car broke down in front of a restaurant. So I went inside the restaurant and there were 12 people in the restaurant. And they were all in their birthday suits. Well, that night at the restaurant I made a lot of new friends and I had a lot of fun. And the next day my car was fixed.

But I decided not to continue driving to Texas.

You see, the owner of the restaurant offered me a job as a waiter and he told me that I was allowed to work in my birthday suit. So I accepted the job offer and for the first time in his life I didn’t feel like an outsider.

Okay, well that’s the end of our third and final point of view story. So that brings us to the end of this point of view lesson. So I want you to listen to this point of view lesson every day for at least seven days. And as you listen to each story, please remember the point of view that the story is being told from. Okay?

Is the story being told as if it’s happening right now? Is the story being told as if it will happen three years from now? Or maybe the story is being told from Charlie’s point of view as if it has already happened. So just think about the point of view that the story is being told from as you listen to each story.
