John Has Big Feet – Point Of View Lesson

Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English and I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, in today’s lesson I’m going to tell you the same story that you heard in the mini-story lesson but I’m going to tell you that story from three different points of view. First, I want to tell you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. So let’s start.

There is a man and his name is John. And unfortunately John is unable to find a wife. Yes, John is unable to find a wife because he has very big feet. Yes, John has very big feet but he does not want to have very big feet. In fact, John wants his feet to be smaller.

Well, one day John goes to see a doctor and he tells the doctor that he wants his feet to be smaller. Well, the doctor tells John that if he wants his feet to be smaller then he needs to go under the knife. And then he tells John that it costs $1 million to go under the knife. Well, John does not have $1 million so he is unable to go under the knife. Yes, that’s right. John is unable to go under the knife so he still has very big feet.

Well, as you know, John wants his feet to be smaller but he does not know how to make his feet smaller. So John goes on the internet to do some research. And when John is doing some research he learns how to make his feet smaller. He does! John learns that if he drinks 112 cups of coffee every day for three months then his feet will be smaller. So that’s what John does.

John drinks 112 cups of coffee every day. He does this for three months. And during those three months John spends a lot of money buying coffee at Starbucks. And John is wired every day.

But unfortunately John’s feet do not get smaller. Poor John.

Well, John is upset because he does not know how to make his feet smaller. So he wants to clear his mind. So he goes for a walk. Yes, John goes for a walk because he wants to clear his mind.

And after John walks for 10 minutes he hears a woman scream. Now the woman’s name is Doris and Doris screams because her house is on fire and she is unable to get out of the house.

Well, after John hears Doris scream he goes into Doris’ house and he uses his big feet to put out the fire. He does! John walks on the fire with his big feet. That’s how he puts out the fire. And after John puts out the fire he goes home. Yes, John goes home. He doesn’t even talk to Doris before he leaves.

Well, the next day John goes to the store and he runs into Doris there, excuse me, he bumps into Doris there. John bumps into Doris at the store. And when Doris sees John she thanks him.

Doris thanks John for saving her life. And then she invites John to have dinner with her that night at her house. Well, John thinks that Doris is easy on the eyes so he accepts her invitation to have dinner with her that night.

Well, that night John and Doris have dinner together. And after dinner they talk all night long.

And then John and Doris have dinner together again the next night. And the night after that they also have dinner together. You see, John and Doris fall in love. And soon after that they get married. And for the first time in John’s life he’s happy to have very big feet. Yes, it’s true! John is happy to have very big feet because his big feet allowed him to meet his wife, Doris.

Okay, that’s the end of our first point of view story. Now in that story I told you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. Next, I want to tell you the story as if it’s going to happen in the future. Let’s say that this story is going to happen 11 years in the future. So let’s start the story.

Eleven years from now there will be a man and his name is going to be John. And John is going to be unable to find a wife. Yes, John is going to be unable to find a wife because he’s going to have very big feet. And John isn’t going to want to have very big feet. In fact, John’s going to want his feet to be smaller.

Well, one day John is going to go see a doctor and he’s going to tell the doctor that he wants his feet to be smaller. Well, the doctor is going to tell John that if he wants his feet to be smaller then he needs to go under the knife. And he’s going to tell John that it will cost $1 million to go under the knife. Well, John isn’t going to have $1 million so he is going to be unable to go under the knife. So John is still going to have very big feet.

Well, as you know, John is going to want his feet to be smaller but he isn’t going to know how to make his feet smaller. So he’s going to go on the internet to do some research. And when John does his research, he’s going to learn how to make his feet smaller. You see, John’s going to learn that if he drinks 112 cups of coffee every day for three months then his feet will get smaller.

So that’s what John’s going to do. John’s going to drink 112 cups of coffee every day. He’s going to do this for three months and during those three months John’s going to spend a lot of money buying coffee at Starbucks. And John’s going to be wired every day. But unfortunately John’s feet are not going to get smaller.

Well, John’s going to be upset. John’s going to be upset because he isn’t going to know how to make his feet smaller. So he’s going to want to clear his mind. So he’s going to go for a walk.

John’s going to go for a walk because he’s going to want to clear his mind. And John’s going to walk for 10 minutes and then he’s going to hear a woman scream. Yes, John’s going to hear a woman scream. Now the woman’s name is going to be Doris and Doris is going to scream because her house is going to be on fire and she’s going to be unable to get out of the house.

Well, John’s going to hear Doris scream and then he’s going to go into Doris’ house and he’s going to use his big feet to put out the fire. Yes, he is! John’s going to walk on the fire with his big feet. That’s how he’s going to put the fire out. He’s going to put out the fire by walking on it.

And after John puts out the fire he’s going to go home. John’s just going to go home. He isn’t even going to talk to Doris before he leaves.

Well, the next day John’s going to go to the store. And guess who he’s going to bump into at the store? Doris! John’s going to bump into Doris at the store. And Doris is going to see John and then she’s going to thank him. Doris is going to thank John for saving her life. And then Doris is going to invite John to have dinner with her at her house that night. Well, John is going to think that Doris is easy on the eyes so he’s going to accept Doris’ invitation to have dinner with her that night.

And that night John and Doris are going to have dinner together. And after dinner they’re going to talk all night long. And the night after that John and Doris are going to have dinner together again. And the night after that they’re also going to have dinner together. You see, John and Doris are going to fall in love. And soon after that they’re going to get married. And for the first time in John’s life he will be happy that he has very big feet. Yes, that’s right. John’s going to be happy to have very big feet because those feet will have allowed him to meet his wife, Doris.

Okay, that brings us to the end of our second point of view story. So in that story I told you the story as if it will happen in the future, 11 years in the future to be precise. So we have one more point of view story today. Now in this story I’m going to tell you the story from John’s point of view. And I’m going to tell you the story as if it has already happened in the past. So you’re going to have to pretend I’m John when I’m telling this story. Okay, are you ready? Then let’s start the story.

Hi, my name is John and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago. You see, at that time I was unable to find a wife. It’s true. I was unable to find a wife because I had very big feet. Yes, I had very big feet but I didn’t want to have very big feet. In fact, I wanted my feet to be smaller.

Well, one day I went to see a doctor and I told the doctor that I wanted my feet to be smaller. Well, the doctor told me that if I wanted my feet to be smaller then I had to go under the knife. And he told me that it costs $1 million to go under the knife. Well, I didn’t have $1 million so I was unable to go under the knife. And thus I still had very big feet.

Well, as you know, I wanted my feet to be smaller but I didn’t know how to make my feet smaller.

So I went on the internet to do some research. I went on the internet to do some research and when I was doing my research I learned how to make my feet smaller. It’s true, I did. I learned that if I drank 112 cups of coffee every day for three months then my feet would get smaller.

So that’s what I did. I drank 112 cups of coffee every day. I did this for three months. And during those three months I spent a lot of money buying coffee at Starbucks. And I was wired every day.

But unfortunately my feet did not get smaller.

Well, I was upset because I did not know how to make my feet smaller. And I wanted to clear my mind so I went for a walk. I went for a walk because I wanted to clear my mind. And after I had walked for 10 minutes I heard a woman scream. Yes, the woman’s name was Doris. And Doris screamed because her house was on fire and she was unable to get out of the house.

Well, after I heard Doris scream I went into Doris’ house and I used my big feet to put out the fire.

It’s true, I did! I walked all over the fire with my big feet. That’s how I put out the fire. And after I finished putting out the fire I went home. Yes, I went home. I didn’t even speak to Doris before I left. I just went home.

Well, the next day I went to the store and guess who I bumped into at the store? Doris! Yes, I bumped into Doris at the store. And when Doris saw me she thanked me. Doris thanked me for saving her life. And then she invited me to have dinner with her at her house that night. Well, I thought that Doris was easy on the eyes so I accepted Doris’ invitation to have dinner with her at her house that night.

And that night Doris and I had dinner together. And after dinner Doris and I talked all night long.

And the next night Doris and I had dinner together again. And the night after that we also had dinner together. You see, Doris and I fell in love. And soon after that we got married. And for the first time in my life I was happy that I had very big feet. I was happy that I had very big feet because those feet allowed me to meet my wife, Doris.

Okay, well that’s the end of our third point of view story. Now in that story I told you the story from John’s point of view and the story was told as if it had already happened in the past. So this brings us to the end of this point of view lesson. So I want you to listen to this lesson every day for at least seven days. The reason I want you to listen to this for at least seven days is because I want you to learn this material deeply.

So as you listen to each of these stories, I want you to remember the point of view that the story is being told from. And I think you will notice that the words in each story change as the point of view changes, okay?
