Banana Plantation – Point Of View Lesson

Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English. And I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, in today’s lesson I’m going to tell you a story from three different points of view. First, I want to tell you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. So let’s start.

There is a monkey and his name is George and George lives in Cambodia. And George’s father owns a banana plantation and he sells bananas to every monkey in Cambodia. So George’s father is loaded.

Well, when George is 16 years old, his father gives him $344,000. But unfortunately, George spends the money quickly. Yes, George spends the money quickly because he is a spendthrift.

Well, after George spends all of his money, he asks his father for more money. But George’s father cuts George off.

Well, George does not have any money so he gets a job. He actually gets a job working for his father. George picks bananas for his father and he is the only monkey who picks bananas for his father. But there are also 98 elephants who pick bananas for George’s father. Well, unfortunately, George’s father does not treat the elephants well, no. He whips the elephants while they pick bananas. He whips the elephants because he wants them to work faster.

Well, George is bummed out when his father whips the elephants so he asks his father to stop whipping them. But unfortunately, George and his father do not see eye to eye on how to treat the elephants. And the next day, George’s father whips the elephants again so George quits. George quits his job picking bananas for his father.

Well, after George quits his job, the elephants bake George a banana cake to thank him. And George does not have a place to live so the elephants ask George to live with them and George says yes. So George lives with the elephants.

Well, when George’s father learns that George is living with the elephants, he tries to give George money to buy a house to live in. But George refuses to take the money from his father because his father has not stopped whipping the elephants.

Well, about a year later, George’s father dies. So George becomes the new owner of the banana plantation. And after George becomes owner of the banana plantation, he frees all of the elephants and for the rest of their lives he gives the elephants all of the bananas they ever want.

Okay, so that completes our first story in this lesson. Now remember, in that story I told you the story as if it is happening right now in the present. Next, I want to tell you the story as if it’s happening in the future.

Okay, so I’ll tell you the same story but this time I’m going to change the point of view to the future. So let’s start.

49 years from now in the future, there will be a monkey and his name is going to be George. And George is going to live in Cambodia. And George’s father is going to own a banana plantation and he’s going to sell bananas to every monkey in Cambodia. So George’s father is going to be loaded.

Well, when George is 16 years old, his father is going to give him $344,000. And unfortunately, George is going to spend the money quickly because George is a spendthrift. Well, after George spends all of his money, he’s going to ask his father for more money. But George’s father is going to cut George off.

Well, George is not going to have any money so he’s going to get a job. He’s actually going to get a job working for his father. George is going to pick bananas for his father and he will be the only monkey who picks bananas for his father. But there will also be 98 elephants who pick bananas for George’s father. Well, unfortunately George’s father is not going to treat the elephants well, no. George’s father is going to whip the elephants while the elephants pick bananas. He’s going to whip the elephants because he’s going to want them to work faster.

Well, George is going to be bummed out when his father whips the elephants so he’s going to ask his father to stop whipping the elephants. But unfortunately, George and his father are not going to see eye to eye on how to treat the elephants and the next day, George’s father is going to whip the elephants again. So George is going to quit his job. George is going to quit his job picking bananas for his father.

Well, after George quits his job, the elephants are going to bake George a banana cake to thank him. And George isn’t going to have a place to live so the elephants are going to ask George to live with them and George is going to say yes. So he’s going to live with the elephants.

Well, when George’s father learns that George is living with the elephants, he’s going to try to give George money to buy a house to live in. But George is going to refuse to take the money. George is going to refuse to take the money from his father because his father will not have stopped whipping the elephants.

Well, about one year later, George’s father is going to die. So George is going to become the new owner of the banana plantation. And after George becomes owner of the banana plantation, he’s going to free all of the elephants and for the rest of their lives he’s going to give the elephants all of the bananas they ever want.

Okay, so that is the end of our second story in this lesson. Now remember, in that story I told you the story as if it was happening in the future sometime, okay? So I have one more story for you in this lesson. This time I’m going to tell you the story from George’s point of view. And the story will be told as if it has already happened in the past. So when I tell you this story, you’re going to have to pretend that I’m a monkey, okay? George the monkey, that is. Alright, so let’s start the story.

Hello, I am a monkey and my name is George and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago. You see, at that time I lived in Cambodia. And my father owned a banana plantation and he sold bananas to every monkey in Cambodia. So my father was loaded.

Well, when I was 16 years old, my father gave me $344,000. But unfortunately, I spent the money quickly because I was a spendthrift. Well, after I spent all of my money, I asked my father for more money. But my father cut me off.

Well, I didn’t have any money so I got a job. I actually got a job working for my father. I picked bananas for my father and I was the only monkey who picked bananas for my father. But there were also 98 elephants who also picked bananas for my father. Well, unfortunately, my father did not treat the elephants well. He whipped the elephants while they picked bananas. He whipped them because he wanted them to work faster.

Well, I was bummed out when my father whipped the elephants so I asked my father to stop whipping them. But unfortunately, my father and I did not see eye to eye on how to treat the elephants. And the next day, my father whipped the elephants again so I quit. I quit my job picking bananas for my father.

Well, after I quit my job, the elephants baked me a banana cake to thank me. And I didn’t have a place to live so the elephants asked me to live with them and I said yes. I lived with the elephants then.

Well, when my father learned that I was living the elephants, he tried to give me money to buy a house to live in. But I refused to take the money from my father because my father had not stopped whipping the elephants.

Well, about one year later, my father died. So I became the new owner of the banana plantation.

And after I became owner of the banana plantation, I set all of the elephants free and for the rest of their lives I gave the elephants all the bananas they ever wanted.

Okay, so that’s the end of our third and final story in this lesson. Now in that story I told you the story from George’s point of view. And the story was told as if it had already happened. So now I want you to listen to this lesson every day for at least seven days. And as you listen to each one of these stories, I want you to remember the point of view that the story is being told from.

And as you listen to these stories more times, you will start to understand how the words change as the point of view changes for this story.

Okay, that’s all for this point of view lesson then. I’ll see you next time.
