DIY – VIP Mini Story
Hello, this is A. J. welcome to the mini story for this month. Let’s get started.
Nicola, Heva the dog and Chimmy the chimp are treasure hunters. They are in Hong Kong looking for the famous nunchucks of Bruce Lee. Now, of course, nunchucks are a martial arts weapon (two sticks with a chain in between) and Bruce Lee was a famous martial arts actor – movie star – and the nunchucks of Bruce Lee are worth a lot of money.
So why do Nicola, Heva the dog and Chimmy the monkey want the nunchucks of Bruce Lee?
Well, because the nunchucks of Bruce Lee are worth a lot of money.
Now, their rival, Geddy the giant rat, is also looking for the nunchucks. He also wants them because they are worth a lot of money. Nicola, Heva and Chimmy get a tip (a suggestion). They hear that a cook on a dinner cruise knows how to get the nunchucks, so they go on the dinner cruise.
They go back to the kitchen in the back of the boat to find the cook and talk to him. When they enter the kitchen, they see the cook and he’s screaming “Awe!” A giant rat is grabbing his throat choking him.
Now, of course, ‘choking’ means to grab and squeeze someone’s neck and throat.
“Geddy the giant rat”, the three say simultaneously.
Do they say it at the same time or do they say it separately?
They say it at the same time. They say it simultaneously.
“You three again”, says Geddy. “You’re too late, fools.” Geddy throws the cook against the wall then turns to face Chimmy, Heva and Nicola. The three rush forward to save the cook. Chimmy and Heva jump on Geddy as Nicola grabs the cook to rescue him.
So do they go forward slowly or quickly?
They go forward quickly. They rush forward.
What does Nicola do?
Nicola grabs the cook to rescue him.
Chimmy, Heva and Geddy wrestle and fight and struggle. Chimmy is fast and Heva is very strong, but Geddy is also strong and he’s mean and tough.
What do Chimmy, Heva and Geddy do? What do they do?
They wrestle and fight.
Who wrestles and fights together?
Chimmy, Heva and Geddy wrestle and fight together.
Who do Chimmy and Heva wrestle and fight against?
Well, they wrestle and fight against Geddy. Each of them is fighting against Geddy.
Why are they fighting against Geddy?
Because they are rivals and they’re trying to save the cook.
What was Geddy doing to the cook?
He was choking the cook.
Geddy kicks Chimmy and throws Heva then runs to the back of the kitchen, out the back of the boat and dives off the boat into the water. He swims away and escapes.
Does Geddy kick Heva?
No, Geddy doesn’t kick Heva. Geddy kicks Chimmy.
What does Geddy do to Heva?
Geddy throws Heva, then he runs to the back of the boat, dives into the water and swims away to escape. Nicola takes care of the cook who is lying on the floor.
Where is the cook?
The cook is lying on the floor.
“I told the rat where to find the nunchucks”, gasps the cook.
‘Gasp’ means to say something but with kind of a weak voice. So if you have a tough time breathing, it’s hard to breath, we say you are gasping for air. So the cook gasps, he says “Ah, I told the rat where to find the nunchucks.”
Why does the cook gasp?
Well, the cook gasps because he was just choked. Geddy was choking him, so it’s difficult for the cook to breathe.
So what does the cook do?
He gasps. He gasps.
Does he talk normally or does he gasp for air as he speaks?
He gasps. He gasps. “I told the rat where to find the nunchucks”, he gasps.
Who gasps?
The cook. The cook gasps.
Chimmy yells, “Where? Where are the nunchucks?” “Chimmy, he’s hurt. Leave him alone”, says Nicola. “You shouldn’t go there”, says the cook. “The nunchucks are owned by Emile Rothschild. He’s a horrible man, don’t become his enemy.” “Please, just tell us where to find the nunchucks’, says Chimmy. “They’re worth a lot of money.” “Chimmy, stop”, says Nicola. The cook shakes his head and raises an arm. “Okay, I’ll tell you, only because I hate Rothschild”, says the cook. “They are shooting a martial arts movie on The Peak.”
What are they shooting on The Peak?
A martial arts movie.
Are they shooting a gun, pow, pow?
No, they’re not shooting a gun. They’re shooting a movie.
To ‘shoot’ a movie means to record a movie. So we say shoot a movie. Sometimes we say shoot a photograph, shoot a camera. It just means to take a picture, to record a movie.
So are they recording a martial arts movie on The Peak?
Yes, they are shooting a martial arts movie on The Peak.
Where are they shooting a martial arts movie?
On The Peak.
Where is The Peak?
The Peak is on Hong Kong Island.
A ‘peak’ is a mountain top and Hong Kong Island has a peak. It has a mountain and at the top of the mountain it’s called The Peak. It’s called The Peak of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Peak or just The Peak, the top. It means the top.
So are they shooting a martial arts movie near the water?
No, they’re not shooting a martial arts movie near the water.
Where are they shooting a martial arts movie?
On The Peak.
Are they shooting a movie at the top of a mountain or at the bottom of a mountain?
At the top on The Peak. They’re shooting a martial arts movie on The Peak.
Who says they are shooting a martial arts movie on The Peak?
The cook.
The cook says, “I’ll tell you where the nunchucks are. They’re shooting a martial arts movie on The Peak. Rothschild lent them the nunchucks to use in the movie. The nunchucks will be on the set.”
What did Rothschild do?
He lent the nunchucks to the movie company.
Did he borrow the nunchucks?
No, he didn’t borrow the nunchucks. He lent the nunchucks.
‘To lend’ is to give to someone for a short time, but then you want it back. And then ‘to borrow’ is to receive something for a short time and then you give it back. ‘Lending’ is the verb. ‘To lend’ means to give for a while, not permanently. And ‘to borrow’ means to take or receive for a while, not permanently.
So does Rothschild borrow the nunchucks or does Rothschild lend the nunchucks?
Rothschild lends the nunchucks.
So does he give them to the movie company or does he take them from the movie company?
Rothschild gives them to the movie company for a while. He lends them to the movie company.
Who lends the nunchucks to the movie company?
Rothschild. Rothschild lends the nunchucks to the movie company or, if we want to say the past, Rothschild lent them to the movie company.
Did he lend them or did he borrow them?
He lent them (past). He lent them to the movie company. So he already did it.
Who lent the nunchucks to the movie company?
Rothschild did.
And who borrowed the nunchucks?
Well, the movie company borrowed the nunchucks. They borrowed the nunchucks from Rothschild. Rothschild lent the nunchucks to the movie company and the movie company borrowed the nunchucks from Rothschild.
So where will the nunchucks be?
On the set, on the movie set.
A movie ‘set’ is a movie location. It includes the cameras, the tents and the actors and the buildings. It’s the location where a company shoots a movie, makes a movie, records a movie.
The set is the location where it happens. So the nunchucks will be on the set of the movie.
Where is the set of the movie?
On The Peak. The set (the movie location) is on Hong Kong Peak and the nunchucks will be on the movie set. The nunchucks will be used by the movie company, so they’ll be on the location (on the set).
What will be on the movie set?
Bruce Lee’s nunchucks, Bruce Lee’s famous nunchucks, which are very expensive.
Where will Bruce Lee’s nunchucks be?
On the movie set.
Nicola, Heva and Chimmy return to their hotel in Hong Kong. The next day, Chimmy, Heva and Nicola go to The Peak of Hong Kong Island. There’s a big movie set there with lots of workers and actors. The three go to the casting office and sign up as extras for the movie.
A ‘casting office’ is where a movie company hires actors or staff. A ‘movie cast’ means a group of actors. That’s called the cast. So a casting office is where they hire. It’s like human resources in a normal company, casting office. They sign up as extras for the movie. An ‘extra’ is an actor that does not speak. So they pay them a little bit of money. They’re usually not professional actors, sometimes yes, sometimes no, but they don’t talk at all. That’s an extra in a movie. So the three go to the casting office and sign up as extras for the movie.
Do they sign up as normal actors?
No, they don’t get a job as normal actors. They’re not going to speak in the movie. They sign up as extras. They just stand there and don’t speak.
Where do they go, which office?
They go to the casting office, the hiring office.
Do they go to the casting office or do they go to the human resources office?
Well, they go to the casting office. In movie companies they call it the casting office not human resources and they sign up as extras for the movie.
Once on the set, they sneak around and search for the nunchucks. They go to the prop tent and enter and inside the prop tent they see a familiar face.
A ‘prop’ is a piece of equipment. It’s something used in a movie. It’s not a person. It’s not alive. A gun is a prop. A plant is a prop. Furniture can be a prop, anything, any kind of object. It’s an object that will be in a movie. That’s called a prop. So the prop tent is where the keep all the props, they collect all the props and organize them.
So which tent do they go to?
They go to the prop tent.
Who goes to the prop tent?
Chimmy the monkey, Heva the dog and Nicola the woman.
Why do they go to the prop tent?
Because they’re looking for the nunchucks and the nunchucks will be a prop in the movie. They will be an object in the movie.
And inside the prop tent what do they see?
They see a familiar face.
Geddy the rat is already there and he’s holding the nunchucks. Geddy says, “You three are becoming quite annoying.” “You’re the annoying one, you big rat”, says Heva. As the three move towards Geddy he laughs. As everyone prepares to fight, there are loud shouts outside the tent. “Security, Security, someone is stealing the props!” Men in black suits rush into the tent. One yells, “Hold it right there!” ‘Hold it right there’ means stop immediately. Hold it right there. ‘Hold it’ means stop.
To be continued next month….
See you next time. Just listen to this story each day for two or more weeks and I will see you later. Have a great day, bye-bye.
