Luigi’s Italian Restaurant – Point Of View Lesson

Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English and I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, in this lesson I’m going to tell you the same story three times but each time I tell you the story, I’m going to change the point of view for the story. Okay, so first I’d like to tell you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. So let’s start.

There is a man and his name is Peter and Peter is a student at New York University. And Peter is studying business. Well, Peter meets a woman named Amanda. He meets Amanda in a marketing class and Peter really likes Amanda so Peter invites Amanda to have dinner with him at his apartment on Tuesday. And guess what? Amanda really likes Peter so Amanda accepts Peter’s invitation. So Peter asks Amanda to arrive at his apartment on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. sharp.

Well, Amanda loves men who know how to cook. And Peter knows this so Peter tells Amanda that he plans to cook dinner for her on Tuesday. He does not plan to go to a restaurant and bring the food to his apartment. Well, when Amanda hears this, she is excited because she loves men who know how to cook. But Peter is not excited about cooking. He’s not excited about it at all. In fact, he’s worried about it because Peter can’t even boil water. So cooking dinner for Amanda is going to be a tall task for Peter.

Well, on Tuesday, Peter’s last class ends at 2:00 p.m. so at 2:00 p.m. Peter goes home because he needs to start cooking dinner. But when he arrives at home, he’s pretty tired. So he decides to rest for just five minutes. But once he starts to rest, he is out like a light and he sleeps for far more than five minutes. He sleeps for a long time. In fact, he doesn’t wake up until 7:02 p.m. and that’s only 28 minutes before the time that Amanda is to arrive at his apartment for dinner that night and Peter has not cooked dinner yet.

So this is what Peter does. He goes to Luigi’s Italian Restaurant and he orders two large pieces of lasagna to go. And he gets the food and he arrives at his apartment before 7:30, so he arrives before Amanda arrives. And when Amanda arrives at 7:30, he serves the lasagna for dinner along with a bottle of red wine.

Well, Amanda really loves the lasagna because she loves Italian food and she really enjoys having dinner with Peter that night. So she asks Peter to join her for dinner again the next night and she asks him to go with her to her favorite restaurant. Well, of course, Peter happily says yes and the next night Peter and Amanda have dinner at Amanda’s favorite place to eat, Luigi’s Italian Restaurant. But fortunately for Peter, Luigi does not serve lasagna on Wednesdays.

Okay, so that’s our first story in this lesson. Now in that story, I told you the story as if it is happening right now in the present. For our next story, I’m going to change the point of view. I want to tell you the story as if it will happen in the future, okay, let’s say 49 years from now in the future. Alright, so let’s start.

49 years from now in the future, there will be a man and his name will be Peter and Peter will be a student at New York University and he’s going to be studying business. Well, Peter’s going to meet a woman and her name is going to be Amanda. And he’s going to meet Amanda in a marketing class and Peter’s really going to like Amanda so he’s going to ask Amanda to have dinner with him at his apartment the following Tuesday. And guess what? Amanda is also going to like Peter so she’s going to accept Peter’s invitation to have dinner with him at his apartment on Tuesday. And so Peter is going to ask Amanda to arrive at his apartment on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. sharp.

Well, I want to tell you a little more about Amanda. Amanda is going to love men who know how to cook. And Peter’s going to know this so Peter is going to tell Amanda that he plans to cook for her on Tuesday, cook dinner for her, not just go to the store and bring food back or go to a restaurant and bring food back. He’s going to plan to cook dinner for her. And Amanda’s going to be very happy to hear this. Unfortunately, though Peter is not going to be very excited about this. No, he’s not going to be excited about cooking at all because Peter isn’t even going to know how to boil water. That’s right. So cooking dinner for Amanda is going to be a tall task for Peter.

Well, on Tuesday, Peter’s last class is going to end at 2:00 p.m. so at 2:00 p.m. Peter’s going to go home because he’s going to need to start cooking dinner. And he’s going to arrive at his apartment and he’s going to be very tired. So he’s going to decide to rest for just five minutes.

Well, unfortunately, once Peter starts to rest, he’s going to be out like a light and he’s going to sleep for a long time. Peter isn’t going to wake up until 7:02 p.m. so that means Peter is just going to have 28 minutes until Amanda is to arrive at his apartment for dinner that night.

Well, Peter is going to need to think of something fast so he’s going to go to Luigi’s Italian Restaurant and he’s going to order two large pieces of lasagna to go. And he’s going to get the food and then he’s going to go to his apartment and he’s going to arrive before Amanda arrives at 7:30 p.m. sharp. And after Amanda arrives, Peter is going to serve the lasagna for dinner along with a bottle of red wine.

Well, I have some more to tell you about Peter and Amanda. Amanda is going to love the lasagna because she’s also going to love all Italian food. And she’s really going to enjoy having dinner with Peter that night so Amanda is going to ask Peter to join her for dinner again the next night.

She’s going to ask him to go with her to her favorite restaurant and, of course, Peter’s going to say yes. So the next night, Peter and Amanda are going to have dinner at Amanda’s favorite place to eat, Luigi’s Italian Restaurant. But fortunately for Peter, Luigi isn’t going to serve lasagna on Wednesdays.

Okay, well that’s our second story in this lesson. This time when I told you the story, I told you the story as if it was happening in the future, 49 years in the future. So there’s one more story in this lesson. This time I’m going to change the point of view to Peter’s point of view so when I tell you this story, I’m going to tell you the story as if Peter is telling you the story. And I’m going to tell you the story as if it’s already happened in the past. Alright, well let’s start then.

Hello, my name is Peter and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me in the past, a long time ago. You see, at that time, I was a student at New York University and I was studying business. Well, I met a woman named Amanda. I met her in a marketing class and I really liked Amanda so I invited Amanda to have dinner with me at my apartment on Tuesday of that week. And fortunately, Amanda really liked me also. So she accepted my invitation. So I asked Amanda to arrive at my apartment on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. sharp.

Well, Amanda loved men who knew how to cook and I knew this because she had told me that when I first met her. So I told Amanda that I was planning to cook dinner for her on Tuesday, I was not planning to just go buy some food at a restaurant and bring it to the apartment for dinner.

I was planning to cook for her. And when I told her this, she was really excited about it. But I wasn’t excited. No, I wasn’t excited about cooking at all. You see, I was worried about it because I couldn’t even boil water. So cooking dinner for Amanda was a tall task for me.

Well, on Tuesday, my last class ended at 2:00 p.m. so at 2:00 p.m. I went home. I went home because I needed to start cooking dinner. But when I arrived at home, I was tired. So I decided to rest for just five minutes. But unfortunately, once I started to rest, I was out like a light and I slept for a long time. I slept for a long time, alright, I didn’t wake up until 7:02 p.m. and that was just 28 minutes before Amanda was to arrive at my apartment for dinner that night and I had not cooked dinner yet.

Well, I needed to do something and I needed to do it fast so this is what I did. I went to Luigi’s Italian Restaurant and I ordered two pieces, two large pieces of lasagna to go. And when the food was ready, I went to my apartment immediately and I arrived before Amanda arrived at 7:30 p.m.

And when Amanda arrived at 7:30 p.m. sharp, I served the lasagna for dinner along with a bottle of red wine.

Well, Amanda loved the lasagna because Amanda loved Italian food. And Amanda and I enjoyed a really nice dinner together that night so Amanda asked me to join her for dinner again the next night and she asked me to go with her to her favorite restaurant. So, of course, I said yes. So that next night, Amanda and I had dinner at Amanda’s favorite place to eat, Luigi’s Italian Restaurant.

But fortunately for me, Luigi didn’t serve lasagna on Wednesdays.

Okay, well, that’s the end of our third and final story in this point of view lesson. Now in that version of the story, I told you the story as if Peter was telling you the story and I told you the story as if it had already happened in the past. So we are now at the end of this lesson so I’d really like you to learn this material deeply so I want you to listen to this lesson every day for at least 7 days.

You may even wish to listen to this lesson for longer than that, maybe 14 days. However long it takes you to learn the material deeply, that’s how long I’d like you to listen to this lesson. And just as you listen to each one of these stories, just relax and just try and understand what’s happening in the story. And always remember the point of view that the story’s being told from.
