Magic Camera – Point Of View Lesson
Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English and I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, in this lesson I’m going to tell you the same story three different times. But each time I tell you the story, I’m going to change the point of view for the story. First, I want to tell you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. So let’s start.
There is a gorilla and his name is Charlie. And Charlie is married and his wife’s name is Rebecca. And Charlie and Rebecca have a problem. Their money is in short supply. Their money is in short supply so they are unable to pay their rent. They do not have enough money to pay the rent for their home.
Well, one day Charlie purchases a camera at a garage sale and he pays $121 for the camera. And when Rebecca sees the camera, she blows a fuse. Yes, Rebecca blows a fuse because Charlie has spent all of their money on the camera.
And after Charlie purchases the camera, Rebecca yells at him for 11 hours every day. So finally, Charlie tells Rebecca to get off his back. Well, Rebecca tells Charlie that she will get off his back after he has enough money to pay the rent.
Well, Charlie loves the camera and soon he realizes that the camera is a magic camera. Yes, he learns that it’s a magic camera because the camera takes pictures five days in the future. When Charlie takes a picture of a car, the picture of the car shows that car five days in the future, not at the moment when Charlie takes the picture.
Well, Charlie live in Paris and the same week that Charlie purchases the camera, the World Cup, the Gorilla World Cup, in fact, is being played in Paris. Well, the championship game of the Gorilla World Cup is to be played in five days. So five days in the future, the game will be played. So Charlie goes to the football stadium and he takes a picture of the scoreboard and then he places a large bet on the Gorilla World Cup championship game.
Well, five days later, the Gorilla World Cup championship game is played and Charlie wins the bet. And he makes $176,000 from the bet. And after he collects the money, he goes home and he shows it to Rebecca. And then Rebecca finally gets off Charlie’s back.
Okay, so that’s the end of our first story in this lesson. Now in that story, I told you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. Next, I want to tell you the story as if it’s going to happen in the future. So let’s start.
40 years from now in the future, there will be a gorilla and his name’s going to be Charlie. And Charlie’s going to be married and his wife’s name will be Rebecca. And Charlie and Rebecca are going to have a problem. Their money is going to be in short supply. So they are not going to have enough money to pay the rent, the rent for their home, that is.
Well, Charlie is going to go to a garage sale and he’s going to purchase a camera at the garage sale. And he’s going to pay $121 for the camera. And when Rebecca sees the camera, she’s going to blow a fuse. Rebecca’s going to blow a fuse because Charlie will have spent all of their money on the camera.
Well, after Charlie purchases the camera, Rebecca is going to yell at Charlie for 11 hours every day. So finally Charlie is going to tell Rebecca to get off his back. Well, Rebecca is going to tell Charlie that she will get off his back after he has enough money to pay the rent.
Well, Charlie is going to love the camera and soon he’s going to learn that the camera is a magic camera. You see, the camera is going to take pictures of things five days in the future.
Well, Charlie is going to live in Paris and the same week he purchases the camera, the Gorilla World Cup is going to be played in Paris. And the championship game is going to be played five days in the future so Charlie is going to go to the football stadium and he’s going to take a picture of the scoreboard. And after that, Charlie is going to place a large bet on the Gorilla World Cup championship game.
Well, five days later, the Gorilla World championship game is going to be played and Charlie’s going to win his bet. He’s going to win $176,000 from the bet. And after he collects the money, Charlie’s going to go home and he’s going to show the money to Rebecca and finally Rebecca is going to get off Charlie’s back.
Okay, so that’s the end of our second story in this lesson. Now in that story, I told you the story as if it’s going to happen in the future, okay? So I have one more story for you in this lesson. Now in this story,
you’re going to hear the story from Charlie’s point of view. And the story is going to be told as if it’s already happened in the past, okay? So you’re going to have to pretend right now when I tell this story that I’m a gorilla named Charlie, alright? Alright, so let’s start the story.
Hello, I’m a gorilla and my name’s Charlie and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago. You see, at that time I was married and my wife’s name was Rebecca and Rebecca and I had a problem. Our money was in short supply. Yes, our money was in short supply so we did not have enough money to pay the rent. We didn’t have enough money to pay the rent for the home that we lived in, okay?
Well, I went to a garage sale and at the garage sale I purchased a camera. And I paid $121 for the camera. Well, when Rebecca saw the camera, she blew a fuse. Yes, she blew a fuse because I spent all of our money on the camera.
And after I purchased the camera, Rebecca yelled at me for 11 hours every day. So finally, I told her to get off my back. Well, Rebecca told me that she would get off my back when I had enough money to pay the rent.
Well, I really loved the camera and soon I learned that the camera was a magic camera. Yes, you see it was a magic camera because it took pictures of things five days in the future. You see, when I took a picture of a car, in the picture was the car five days in the future, not at the moment I took the picture. So the camera took picture of things five days in the future.
Well, I lived in Paris at that time and at the time I purchased the camera, the Gorilla World Cup was being played in Paris. And the championship game was going to be played five days later, five days in the future. So I went to the football stadium and I took a picture of the scoreboard and then I placed a large bet on the Gorilla World Cup championship game.
Well, five days later, the Gorilla World Cup championship game was played and I won the bet. Yes, I won $176,000 from the bet. And after I won the bet, I went home and I showed Rebecca the money and finally she got off my back.
Okay, so that was the last of our three stories in this lesson. Now in that story, I told you the story from Charlie’s point of view, okay? And the story was told as if it was happening in the past. So that means
I’ve told you all three stories in this lesson now. So I want you to listen to these stories every day for at least seven days.
And when you listen to these stories, I just want you to relax and I want you to try and understand what’s happening in the story. And, of course, I always want you to remember the point of view that the story is being told from. Okay, this will help you to understand how the language changes when the point of view changes that someone is speaking from, okay?
When someone speaks about something in the future, the words change. They’re different from when someone speaks about something happening in the present or in the past, okay? Or when I change the point of view so Charlie was telling the story, the words also changed. Alright, so when you listen to this lesson, just try and understand what’s happening and remember the point of view that the story is being told from. And it’s always important to relax as you listen to these things and just try and have fun.
Alright, well that’s all for this lesson. I’ll see you next time.
