The Code VIP – Mini Story

Hello this is AJ, welcome to the mini story. Let’s get started.

There was a monkey.

Was there a monkey?

Yes, there was a monkey.

What was there?

A monkey.

Was there a dog or was there a monkey?

There was a monkey, of course.

Where was the monkey?

Well, the monkey was in Honolulu.

Where is Honolulu?

In Hawaii. Honolulu is in Hawaii. It’s a city in Hawaii.

So who was in Honolulu?

A monkey.

Perhaps I should say what was in Honolulu?

A monkey.

And what was the monkey’s name?

The monkey’s name was Chim-chim. Chim-chim the monkey.

So what the dog’s name?

The dog’s name was Heva. H-e-v-a, Heva.

So what was the monkey’s name?

The monkey’s name was Chim-chim.

And who was Heva?

Heva was a dog.

So was Heva a monkey?

No, Heva was not a monkey.

What was Heva?

Heva was a dog.

And what was Chim-chim?

Chim-chim was a monkey.

And where was Chim-chim?

Chim-chim was in Honolulu.

Where was Heva?

Heva was on the Island of Maui.

Ah, so where was Chim-chim?

Chim-chim was in the City of Honolulu. He was in Honolulu City.

And where was Heva?

Heva was on the Island of Maui.

Was Heva in Maui or on Maui?

On. Heva was on Maui. We usually say someone is on an island, so Heva was on Maui.

Was Chim-chim in Honolulu or on Honolulu?

Chim-chim was in Honolulu. We usually say in a city, so Chim-chim was in Honolulu and Heva was on the Island of Maui.

Now, what kind of monkey was Chim-chim? What was his job?

Ah, well, he was an entrepreneur. Of course, obviously, most monkeys are entrepreneurs. Chim-chim was also an entrepreneur.

An entrepreneur is a business leader, someone who creates their own business, makes their own business.

So Chim-chim was an entrepreneur. Was Heva an entrepreneur?

No, Heva wasn’t an entrepreneur.

So who was an entrepreneur?

Chim-chim.

And what was Chim-chim?

A monkey.

And where was Chim-chim?

In Honolulu.

What was Heva?

A dog.

What was Heva’s job?

Well, Heva didn’t have a job. Dogs don’t have jobs.

So did Heva have a job?

Obviously not. No, Heva did not have a job.

What was Chim-chim’s job?

Chim-chim was an entrepreneur. He was a special entrepreneur who loved something a lot.

What did he love a lot? What did Chim-chim the monkey love a lot? It’s obvious. Did he love bananas a lot?

No, of course not. Of course Chim-chim the entrepreneur did not love bananas. He loved salsa, salsa. Not salsa dancing, but salsa sauce with tomatoes and spices. He loves to eat salsa, as many monkeys do.

So what did Chim-chim love?

Chim-chim loved salsa.

Did he love to dance salsa or did he love to eat salsa?

He loved to eat salsa. He did not like dancing salsa.

So salsa is a dance. It’s the name of a dance, a kind of dancing and salsa is also the name of a kind of spicy tomato sauce.

So which one did Chim-chim particularly love?

He particularly loved salsa. He loved eating spicy salsa.

And what was his job?

He was an entrepreneur.

So Chim-chim got a business idea. He decided to start a salsa company, to make salsa and start a big company to sell salsa, but he needed money.

Where did he go for money?

Well, of course, he went to the bank.

First, Chim-chim went to the bank and he asked the bank for a line of credit.

What did he ask them for?

A line of credit.

Who asked the bank for a line of credit?

Chim-chim. Chim-chim asked the bank for a line of credit.

And he asked for what?

For a line of credit.

What is a line of credit? A line of credit is a specific amount of money that you can borrow from, you can take from. For example, if you have a $10,000 line of credit it means you can borrow up to $10,000. You can borrow less if you want to. You could borrow $3,000 and then later you could add $2,000 more so then you’d be up to $5,000 and then you could do another $3,000. Now you’re up to $8,000. Then you could borrow $2,000 more later and you would reach the maximum, $10,000. Ten thousand is your line of credit. It’s a flexible amount of money you can borrow, so you don’t have to borrow all of it at the same time. So he wanted a line of credit. He wanted an amount of money that he could borrow from, a maximum amount that he could borrow, little by little if he wanted to.

So what did he want from the bank?

He wanted a line of credit from the bank.

And how much money did he want? How much of a line of credit did Chim-chim want?

He wanted $20 million dollars. He wanted a $20 million dollar line of credit.

What kind of line of credit did he want?

He wanted a $20 million dollar line of credit.

What did he want a line of credit for, for what purpose?

He wanted a line of credit for his salsa business.

So how much did he ask for?

He asked for a $20 million dollar line of credit from the bank.

What did the bank say?

Well, the bank said “No. We don’t lend to monkeys.” Oh discrimination, terrible, very terrible. In Honolulu the banks do not lend money to monkeys. It’s a sad situation, I hope we can change it some day, but for now they don’t.

So do banks in Honolulu lend money to monkeys?

No, they don’t. Banks in Honolulu do not lend money to monkeys.

Can monkeys, can a monkey, borrow money from a bank in Honolulu?

No, no, a monkey cannot borrow money from a bank in Honolulu.

Why?

Well, obviously, because Honolulu banks do not lend money to monkeys.

Do Honolulu banks lend money to people?

Sure they do. Yes, they lend money to people all the time.

Do Honolulu banks lend money to dogs?

Well, yeah. Sure they do. In Honolulu the banks lend money to dogs.

Of course, ‘to lend’ means to give money to someone, but they must return the money later. So that’s ‘to lend’. So ‘to lend’ is the act of giving the money to someone and ‘borrow’ means that you’re accepting the money and in both cases the money must be repaid later. It must be given back later. Okay, so it’s to lend and to borrow. Banks lend money and people borrow money from the banks.

So do Honolulu banks lend money to dogs?

Yes, they lend money to dogs.

Do they lend money to monkeys?

No, they do not lend money to monkeys.

Where do the banks not lend money to monkeys?

Honolulu. The banks in Honolulu do not lend money to monkeys, poor Chim-chim.

Chim-chim could not borrow money from a bank.

Could Chim-chim borrow money from a Honolulu bank?

No, he couldn’t.

Would the bank lend money to Chim-chim?

No, the banks in Honolulu would not lend money to Chim-chim. Ah, poor Chim-chim.

So next he decided to do a stock IPO.

What is a stock IPO? IPO means Initial Public Offering. This is a business term, a stock term. You see it in the newspaper sometimes. An IPO, an Initial Public Offering, means that the business sells stock to anyone in the public or everyone in the public.

An Initial Public Offering means it’s the first time they do it. So it means for the first time anyone can buy a percentage of the company. They can become a part owner. They can buy stock. So this is a way that businesses raise money.

So who decided to do a stock IPO?

Chim-chim. Chim-chim decided to sell stock for his new salsa company to the public for the first time.

So which business did a stock IPO?

Chim-chim’s salsa business did a stock IPO, Initial Public Offering.

Did Chim-chim’s business try to sell stock to the public?

Yes, Chim-chim’s business tried to sell stock to the public.

Did Chim-chim make $20 million dollars from his IPO?

No, Chim-chim did not make $20 million dollars from his IPO.

Did his business make $15 million dollars from the IPO?

No, they did not sell $15 million dollars of stock.

So how much stock did Chim-chim’s company sell?

None. They did not sell any stock. The company did not sell any stock.

So how much stock did the company sell?

None.

So how much money did Chim-chim get from the IPO?

Well, he got none. He got no money from the IPO.

Why didn’t he get money from the IPO?

He didn’t get money from the IPO because he didn’t sell any stock.

So what did Chim-chim do next? Well, he decided to bootstrap his business.

What is ‘to bootstrap’ mean? Well, to bootstrap means to build something starting with nothing. It means you start with nothing and you slowly build it up. So in the world of business, to bootstrap a business means you start the business with almost no money and then you grow it without borrowing, without borrowing money. So Chim-chim decided to bootstrap his company.

And what kind of company did he decide to bootstrap?

He decided to bootstrap his salsa company.

Did he decide to borrow a lot of money or did he decide to bootstrap his company?

He decided to bootstrap his company.

Did he decide to start the company with a lot of money or with very little money?

Very little. He decided to start the company with very little money.

So who decided to bootstrap the salsa company?

Chim-chim. Chim-chim decided to bootstrap his new salsa company.

So first he collected peppers, bananas, tomatoes and other spices. He did this himself. Next he made delicious salsa and then he sold it at flea markets on the weekends.

What is a flea market, f-l-e-a, a flea market? A flea market is a small informal market. So at a flea market there are a lot of people selling lots of different things and they’re all very tiny little businesses, like home businesses. So some people might sell used clothes. Other people sell small little arts and crafts. Some people sell different food items. But it’s all small home-based businesses at flea markets.

So where did Chim-chim sell his salsa on the weekends?

At flea markets.

Did he sell his salsa at malls?

No, no, no, not at malls. He didn’t go to malls to sell his salsa.

Where did he go to sell his salsa?

Flea markets.

Did he sell his salsa at flea markets or at malls?

He sold his salsa at flea markets.

Do flea markets have big businesses or very small home businesses?

Flea markets have small home businesses and Chim-chim was bootstrapping his company, so his company was also a small home business.

He sold his salsa at flea markets and step by step his customers grew in number.

What grew in number?

His customers. He got more and more customers. His customers grew in number.

Gradually, his business expanded and eventually he hired employees.

Did he hire employees immediately or did he wait until he had a lot of customers?

He waited until he had a lot of customers and then he hired employees.

Did he hire employees or did he fire employees?

He hired them.

Did he hire them immediately or after his business grew?

After his business grew. Chim-chim hired employees after his business grew and step by step he built a successful salsa company. Chim-chim became a billionaire.

That is the end of our mini story. Listen to this mini story every day, pause and answer the questions as quickly as possible with a lot of energy, very important. Use a lot of energy, a loud voice when you answer the questions. Move your body as you answer the questions. This is very, very, very important.

All right, I will see you next time. Bye-bye.
