Barbara Needs Glasses – Point Of View Lesson
Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English and I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, in today’s lesson I’m going to be telling you a story from three different points of view, same story but three different points of view. First, I want to tell you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. So let’s start.
There is a woman and her name is Barbara. And Barbara wants to get a driver’s license. Barbara wants to get a driver’s license because she wants to be able to drive a car. But, unfortunately, Barbara is unable to get a driver’s license because she flunks the driving test.
Yes, Barbara flunks the driving test because she has poor eyesight so she is unable to see well. And Barbara needs to wear glasses and she knows that she needs to wear glasses but she refuses to purchase a pair of glasses because a pair of glasses costs an arm and a leg.
Well, Barbara loves paintings so one day Barbara purchases a painting of a dog. And she hangs the painting in her bedroom. But Barbara hangs the painting upside down. She hangs the painting upside down because she’s unable to see well. But even after Barbara hangs the painting upside down she still refuses to purchase a pair of glasses.
Well, the next day is Barbara’s mother’s birthday so Barbara bakes a cake for her mother. But Barbara puts salt in the cake instead of sugar. Barbara puts salt in the cake instead of sugar because she is unable to see well so she is unable to see what she puts in the cake. And even after Barbara puts salt in the cake instead of sugar she still refuses to purchase a pair of glasses.
Well, about a week later Barbara wants to visit her grandmother and her grandmother lives in New York. So Barbara decides to take a train to New York. But, unfortunately, Barbara gets on the wrong train. Yes, Barbara does not get on the train that is going to New York. She gets on the train that’s going to Texas. You see, Barbara gets on the wrong train because she’s unable to see well, so she’s unable to read the signs at the train station.
And after Barbara gets to Texas she’s in a bind. Yes, Barbara’s in a bind because she has very little money. Well, Barbara needs to get a job because she’s broke. And, fortunately for her, she finds a job working for an eye doctor. And on the first day she works for the eye doctor, the eye doctor realizes that she’s unable to see well. So the eye doctor makes her a pair of glasses. And he gives her the glasses for free so the glasses do not cost an arm and a leg.
Well, after Barbara saves some money she goes home and she gets a driver’s license. And her mother’s next birthday she bakes a cake for her mother again but this time she uses sugar instead of salt in the cake.
Okay, so that’s the end of our first story, first point of view story. In that story I told you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. So next I want to tell you the story as if it’s going to happen sometime in the future. So let’s start.
Eight years from now in the future there will be a woman and her name is going to be Barbara. And Barbara is going to want to get a driver’s license because she’s going to want to be able to drive a car. But, unfortunately, Barbara is going to be unable to get a driver’s license because she’s going to flunk the driving test.
Yes, you see, Barbara going to flunk the driving test because she’s going to have poor eyesight so she isn’t going to be able to see well. So Barbara’s going to need to wear glasses and she’s going to know that she needs to wear glasses but she is going to refuse to purchase a pair of glasses. She’s going to refuse to purchase a pair of glasses because a pair of glasses is going to cost an arm and a leg.
Well, Barbara is going to love paintings so one day she’s going to purchase a painting of a dog. And she’s going to hang the painting in her bedroom. But, unfortunately, Barbara’s going to hang the painting upside down. Yes, Barbara’s going to hang the painting upside down because she isn’t going to be able to see well. But even after Barbara hangs the painting upside she still is going to refuse to purchase a pair of glasses.
Well, the next day is going to be Barbara’s mother’s birthday so Barbara’s going to bake a cake for her mother. But Barbara’s going to put salt in the cake instead of sugar. Yes, she’s going to put salt in the cake instead of sugar because she isn’t going to be able to see well so she isn’t going to know what she’s putting in the cake. But even after Barbara bakes the cake with sugar instead of salt she still is going to refuse to purchase a pair of glasses.
Well, about a week later Barbara is going to want to visit her grandmother and Barbara’s grandmother is going to live in New York. So Barbara is going to decide to take a train to New York. But, unfortunately, Barbara is going to get on the wrong train. Yes, Barbara is not going to get on the train going to New York. She’s going to get on the train that is going to Texas. She’s
going to get on the wrong train because she isn’t going to be able to see well so she’s going to be unable to read the signs at the train station.
And when Barbara arrives in Texas she’s going to be in a bind. Yes, Barbara’s going to be in a bind because she isn’t going to have a lot of money. Well, Barbara’s going to need to find a job because she’s going to be broke. And, fortunately for her, she’s going to find a job working for an eye doctor. And on the first day she works for the eye doctor, the eye doctor is going to realize that Barbara is unable to see well. So he’s going to make Barbara a pair of glasses and he’s going to give the glasses to Barbara for free. So the glasses will not cost an arm and a leg. The pair of glasses will not cost an arm and a leg.
Well, Barbara is going to save some money and then she’s going to go home. And she’s going to get a driver’s license. And on her mother’s next birthday she’s going to bake a cake for her mother again but this time she’s going to put sugar in the cake instead of salt.
Okay, so that’s the end of our second point of view story. Now remember, in that story I told you the story as if it will happen in the future, eight years in the future, I believe. So I have one more point of view story for you in this lesson. In this point of view story you’re going to hear the story from Barbara’s point of view and the story is going to be told as if it has already happened in the past, okay? So you’re going to have to pretend that I’m Barbara, okay? So let’s start.
Hello, my name is Barbara and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago. You see, at that time I wanted to get a driver’s license because I wanted to be able to drive a car. But, unfortunately, I was unable to get a driver’s license because I flunked the driving test.
Yes, it’s true. I flunked the driving test because I was unable to see well. You see, I had poor eyesight. And I needed to wear glasses and I knew I needed to wear glasses but I refused to purchase a pair of glasses because a pair of glasses cost an arm and a leg.
Well, I loved paintings so one day I purchased a painting of a dog and I hung the painting in my bedroom. But, unfortunately, I hung the painting upside down. Yes, I hung the painting upside down because I was unable to see well. But even after I hung the painting upside down I still refused to purchase a pair of glasses.
Well, the next day was my mother’s birthday so I baked my mother a cake. But, unfortunately, I put salt in the cake instead of sugar. Yes, I put salt in the cake instead of sugar because I was unable to see well so I was unable to see what I was putting in the cake. But even after I put salt in the cake instead of sugar I still refused to purchase a pair of glasses.
Well, about a week later I wanted to visit my grandmother and my grandmother lived in New York. So I decided to take a train to New York. But, unfortunately, I got on the wrong train. Yes, it’s true. I did not get on the train that was going to New York. I got on the train that was going to Texas. You see, I got on the wrong train because I was unable to see well so I was unable to read the signs at the train station.
And when I arrived in Texas I was in a bind. I was in a bind because I had very little money. Well, I needed to find a job because I was broke. And I was fortunate because I found a job working for an eye doctor. And the first day that I worked for the eye doctor he realized that I was unable to see well so he made me a pair of glasses. And he gave me the glasses for free so the pair of glasses did not cost an arm and a leg.
Well, after I saved some money I went home and I got a driver’s license. And on my mother’s next birthday I baked her a cake again but this time I put sugar in the cake instead of salt.
Okay, so that’s the end of our third and final point of view story. Now in that story remember, I told you the story from Barbara’s point of view. And also remember the story was told as if it had already happened in the past. So I want you to listen to this lesson every day for at least seven days. And as you listen to each story it’s very important to remember the point of view that the story’s being told from. And as you listen to the stories more and more, you’ll be able to understand how the words change as the point of view changes, okay? This is a really powerful way for you to learn grammar without having to memorize any boring grammar rules.
Okay, so that brings us to the end of this lesson so I’ll see you next time.
