Blind Date – Point Of View Lesson

Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English. And I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, so in today’s lesson I am going to tell you the same story that I told you in the mini-stories but this time I’m going to tell you that story from three different points of view. First, I want to tell you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. So let’s start.

There is a woman and her name is Mary and Mary wants to find a boyfriend who shares the same interests as her. For example, Mary loves fine food and Mary also loves dancing. And Mary is light on her feet so she is an excellent dancer. So Mary wants to find a boyfriend who also loves fine food and dancing.

Well, one day Mary goes on a date with a football player and his name is Carl. And Carl is good-looking and he is rich. And Carl tells Mary that he wants to wine and dine her on their date. But unfortunately Carl does not wine and dine Mary on their date, no. Carl takes Mary to McDonald’s and Carl makes Mary pay for dinner. So Mary does not go on a second date with Carl.

Well, about a week later Mary goes on a date with Bill. And Bill is a chef at an expensive restaurant so he also loves fine food. And Bill and Mary go to a club on their date. But unfortunately there is a problem. Bill has two left feet so when Bill dances with Mary he steps on her toes. So Mary does not go on a second date with Bill either.

Well, the day after Mary has her date with Bill she stays at home. She stays at home because her feet hurt her. And while she’s at home her friend Rebecca visits her and Rebecca wants to arrange a blind date for Mary. Well, Mary has never been on a blind date but she agrees to do it. So Rebecca arranges a blind date for her, for Mary, excuse me, and her friend, Gino.

Well, the next day Mary and Gino go on a blind date and they are like two peas in a pod. They’re both from New York and neither one of them has been on a blind date before. And Gino is a dance instructor so he also loves dancing. And on their date Gino wines and dines Mary at an Italian restaurant so Gino also loves fine food, just like Mary.

Well, after Gino and Mary finish dinner at the Italian restaurant they go dancing. And Gino is light on his feet so Mary loves dancing with Gino. And after Gino takes Mary home, Mary smiles because she has finally found a boyfriend who shares the same interests as her.

Okay, so that brings us to the end of our first point of view story. In that story I told you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. Next I want to tell you the story as if it will happen sometime in the future. So let’s start the story.

32 years from now in the future there will be a woman and her name is going to be Mary. And Mary is going to want to find a boyfriend who shares the same interests as her. You see, Mary is going to love fine food and she’s going to love dancing. And Mary is going to be light on her feet so she’s going to be an excellent dancer. So Mary will want to find a boyfriend who also loves dancing and fine food.

Well, one day Mary is going to go on a date with a football player and his name will be Carl. And Carl is going to be rich and good-looking. Well, Carl is going to tell Mary that he wants to wine and dine her on their date. But unfortunately Carl is not going to wine and dine Mary on their date, no. Carl is going to take Mary to McDonald’s and Carl is going to make Mary pay for dinner. So Mary is not going to go on a second date with Carl.

Well, about a week later Mary is going to go on a date with Bill and Bill is going to be a chef at an expensive restaurant. So Bill is also going to love fine food. And Bill and Mary are going to go to a club on their date. And unfortunately there will be a problem though. Bill is going to have two left feet so Bill is going to step on Mary’s toes when he dances with her. So Mary is not going to go on a second date with Bill either.

Well, the day after Mary has her date with Bill she’s going to stay home. She’s going to stay at home because her feet are going to hurt her. And while Mary is at home her friend Rebecca is going to visit her. And Rebecca is going to want to arrange a blind date for Mary. Well, Mary will never have been on a blind date before but she’s going to agree to do it. So Rebecca is going to set up a blind date, she’s going to arrange a blind date between Mary and her friend, Gino.

Well, the next day Mary and Gino are going to go on a blind date and they’re going to be like two peas in a pod. They’re both going to be from New York and neither one of them will have been on a blind date before. And Gino is going to be a dance instructor so he’s also going to love dancing. And on their date Gino’s going to wine and dine Mary at an Italian restaurant. So Gino’s also going to love fine food, just like Mary.

Well, after Gino and Mary finish dinner at the Italian restaurant, they’re going to go dancing and Gino is going to be light on his feet, just like Mary. So Mary is going to love dancing with Gino.

And after Gino takes Mary home that night, Mary is going to smile because she will have found a boyfriend who has the same interests as her, a boyfriend who shares the same interests as her.

Okay, well that’s our second point of view story. Now in that story I told you the story as if it will happen in the future at sometime. So I have one more point of view story for you in this lesson and in that story I want to tell you the story from Mary’s point of view. I want to tell you the story as if it’s already happened also, okay? So for this point of view story you’re going to have to pretend I’m a woman named Mary. So let’s start the story.

Hello, I’m a woman and my name is Mary and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago. You see, at that time I wanted to find a boyfriend who shared the same interests as me. And at that time I loved fine food and I also loved dancing and I was light on my feet so I was an excellent dancer. So I wanted to find a boyfriend who also loved fine food and dancing.

Well, one day I went out on a date, I went on a date with a football player and his name was Carl and Carl was rich and he was good-looking. And Carl told me that he wanted to wine and dine me on our date. But unfortunately Carl did not wine and dine me on our date, no, no, no. Carl took me to McDonald’s on our date and he made me pay for dinner. So I did not go on a second date with Carl.

Well, I had never been on a blind date before but I agreed to do it. So Rebecca arranged a blind date between her friend, Gino, and I.

Well, the next day Gino and I went on a blind date and we were like two peas in a pod. We were both from New York and neither one of us had been on a blind date before. And Gino was a dance instructor so he also loved dancing, just like me. And on our date Gino wined and dined me at an Italian restaurant, so Gino also loved fine food like I did.

Well, after Gino and I finished dinner at the Italian restaurant, we went dancing and Gino was light on his feet so I loved dancing with Gino. And after Gino took me home that night, I smiled because I had finally found a boyfriend who shared the same interests as me.

Okay, well that brings us to the end of our third and final point of view story in this lesson. Now in that story I told you the story from Mary’s point of view and the story was told as if it had already happened in the past. So that brings us to the end of this point of view lesson.

So I want you to listen to this lesson every day for at least seven days and as you listen to each point of view story, it’s very important that you remember the point of view that the story is being told from, okay? Because the words in each point of view story are going to change, as the point of view changes, the words in the story change. And the more you listen to these stories the more familiar you will be with how these words change as the point of view changes for the story.
