Shady Uncle – Point Of View Lesson

Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English.

And I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, in this lesson you will hear me tell a story three times. It will be the same story each time but each time I tell the story I’m going to change the point of view. So first I want to tell you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. So let’s start.

There is a man and his name is Anthony. And Anthony is 19 years old and Anthony wants to own a restaurant. But unfortunately, Anthony does not know how to manage a restaurant. Well, Anthony has an uncle and his name is Louis and Louis owns a restaurant. And Louis knows that Anthony also wants to own a restaurant so Louis takes Anthony under his wing.

Well, Louis and Anthony are very different. Anthony is very honest and he does things by the book. But Louis is different. Louis is shady and he does not do things by the book. Let me give you an example. Louis pays his employees under the table because he refuses to pay taxes. But Anthony is different than Louis. Anthony always pays his taxes because he does things by the book.

Well, unfortunately, Louis’ restaurant is under water and he needs money because he is in debt $112,000.00. So he robs a bank. Yes, Louis robs a bank.

He steals $714,000.00 from the bank. And after he robs the bank, he counts the money at the restaurant. Well, when Louis is counting the money, Anthony arrives at the restaurant. And when Anthony sees the money he knows that Louis has robbed the bank. So he calls the police.

Well, after Anthony calls the police, the police arrest Louis and they give all of the money back to the bank. Well, the owners of the bank are so happy that they give Anthony a reward of

$234,000.00. And Anthony uses the money to open his first restaurant. And at that restaurant, he does everything by the book.

Okay, so that brings us to the end of the first story. Now in that story I told you the story as if it is happening right now in the present. Next, I’m going to tell you the story as if it’s happening sometime in the future, let’s say 111 years in the future. So let’s start.

111 years from now, in the future, there will be a man and his name is going to be Anthony. And Anthony’s going to be 19 years old and Anthony is going to want to own a restaurant. But Anthony isn’t going to know how to manage a restaurant. Well, Anthony’s going to have an uncle and his name will be Louis.

And Louis is going to own a restaurant and Louis is going to know that Anthony also wants to won a restaurant so Louis is going to take Anthony under his wing.

Well, Anthony is going to be very honest and he’s going to do things by the book. But Louis is going to be different than Anthony. Louis is going to be shady and he is not going to do things by the book. For example, Louis is going to pay his employees under the table. Yes, he’s going to pay his employees under the table because he’s going to refuse to pay taxes. But Anthony is going to be different than Louis. Anthony is always going to pay his taxes because he’s going to do things by the book.

Well, unfortunately, Louis’ restaurant is going to be under water. And he’s going to need money because he’s going to be in debt 112,000.00. So he’s going to rob a bank. Yes, Louis is going to rob a bank. He’s going to steal $714,000.00 from the bank. And after he robs the bank, he’s going to count the money at the restaurant. Well, when Louis is counting the money, Anthony is going to arrive at the restaurant and Anthony’s going to see the money and then he’s going to know that Louis has robbed the bank so Anthony is going to call the police.

Well, after Anthony calls the police, the police are going to arrest Louis and they’re going to return all of the money to the bank. And the owners of the bank are going to be so happy that they’re going to give Anthony a reward of $234,000.00. Well, Anthony is going to use the money to open his first restaurant. And at that restaurant, he’s going to do everything by the book.

Okay, so that’s the end of our second story in this lesson. Now in that story, I told you the story as if it was going to happen 111 years in the future. So I have one more story for you in this lesson. In this next story, you’re going to hear the story from Anthony’s point of view and the story’s going to be told as if it’s already happened in the past. So let’s start.

Hello, my name is Anthony and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago in the past. At that time, I was 19 years old and I wanted to own a restaurant. But unfortunately, I didn’t know how to manage a restaurant. Well, at that time I had an uncle and his name was Louis.

He’s no longer alive anymore, that’s why I say I had an uncle. Well, Louis owned a restaurant and Louis knew that I also wanted to own a restaurant one day so Louis took me under his wing.

Well, Louis and I were very different. I was very honest and I still am very honest and I did things by the book and I still do things by the book. But Louis was different than me. Louis was shady and he did not do things by the book.

For example, Louis paid his employees under the table because he refused to pay taxes. But I always paid my taxes because I did things by the book.

Well, unfortunately, Louis’ restaurant was under water and he needed money because he was in debt $112,000.00. So he robbed a bank. Yes, that’s right.

Louis robbed a bank and he stole $714,00.00 from the bank. And after he robbed the bank, he counted the money at the restaurant. Well, when Louis was counting the money at the restaurant, I arrived there. I arrived at the restaurant when Louis was counting the money and when I saw the money I knew that Louis had robbed the bank so I called the police.

Well, after I called the police, the police arrested Louis and they returned all of the money to the bank. And the owners of the bank were so happy that they gave me a reward of $234,000.00. Well, I used that money to open my first restaurant and at the restaurant, I did everything by the book.

Okay, so that is the end of our third and final story in this lesson. Now remember, in that story, I told you the story from Anthony’s point of view and the story was told as if it had already happened in the past. So that brings us to the end of this lesson.

So I want you to listen to this lesson every day for at least seven days.

And as you listen to each story, I just want you to relax and try to understand what’s happening in the story. Oh, and remember the point of view the story is being told from. That’s very important because you will soon notice that the words in the story change as the point of view changes.
