Litterbug – Point Of View Lesson

Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English, and I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, I want to start this lesson by telling you a story that is happening in the present, okay? Now in this lesson I should tell you, I’m going to tell you the same story three different times but I want to start by telling you the story in the present, so let’s start there.

There is a gorilla and his name is Gary. And one day Gary is driving his car and while he’s driving his car, he is drinking a soda. And after he finishes the soda, he throws the bottle on the ground. You see, Gary has a problem. He’s a litterbug. Well, there’s also a dog in this story and the dog’s name is Jeff. And Jeff’s pet peeve is littering.

So when Jeff sees Gary throw the bottle on the ground, he loses his temper. Well, after Gary throws the bottle on the ground, Jeff follows Gary and after some time, Gary stops at McDonald’s. And when he stops, Jeff yells at him. Jeff yells at Gary for five minutes and then he drives away. He drives away very fast actually.

Well, the next day Gary has a job interview with Google. You see, Google has an office in Spain and that’s where Gary wants to work. He wants to work in Spain. So that night before the interview, Gary brushes up on speaking Spanish.

Well, the next day Gary has the interview and when he arrives at Google’s offices, he meets the vice president of Google, and guess who that is. Jeff! Jeff the dog is the vice president of Google.

Well, when Gary sees Jeff, he is nervous. But fortunately for Gary, Jeff does not hold a grudge. He does not hold a grudge against Gary. Well, the interview goes very well and Jeff actually likes Gary a lot. So after the interview was finished, Jeff offers Gary a job if he promises never to litter again.

Okay, so that’s the end of our first story in this lesson. Now, as I mentioned at the start, that story was being told as if it’s happening right now in the present. Next I want to tell you the story as if it’s going to happen in the future. So let’s start.

41-3/4 years from now in the future, there will be a gorilla and his name is going to be Gary. And one day Gary is going to be driving his car and while he is driving his car, he’s going to be

drinking a soda. And he’s going to finish the soda and then he’s going to throw the bottle on the ground. You see, unfortunately Gary is going to have a problem. He’s going to be a litterbug. Well, there’s also going to be a dog and his name will be Jeff and Jeff’s pet peeve is going to be littering.

So when Jeff sees Gary throw the bottle on the ground, when he seems him litter, he’s going to lose his temper. So Jeff is going to follow Gary and after some time, Gary’s going to stop at McDonald’s. And when he stops at McDonald’s, Jeff is going to yell at Gary. Yes, he’s going to yell at Gary for five minutes and then he’s going to drive away, he’s going to drive away very fast actually.

Well, the next day Gary is going to have a job interview with Google. And, you see, Google’s going to have an office in Spain and Gary’s going to want to work in Spain. So the night before the interview, Gary is going to brush up on speaking Spanish.

Well, the next day Gary is going to have the job interview and he’s going to arrive at Google’s office and he’s going to meet the vice president of Google. The vice president of Google is going to be Jeff the dog!

So Gary is going to be very nervous. But fortunately for Gary, Jeff is not going to hold a grudge against him. Well, the interview is going to go very well for Gary and Jeff’s going to like Gary very much. So after the interview is finished, Jeff is going to offer Gary a job but only if he promises never to litter ever again.

Okay, so that’s the end of our second story in this point of view lesson. Now in that story, you were told the story as if it was going to happen in the future, many years in the future. Okay, so there’s one more story in this lesson. Now in this next story, I’m going to tell you the story from Gary’s point of view. So you’re going to have to pretend that I am Gary the gorilla, okay? Alright, so let’s start.

Hello, I’m a gorilla and my name is Gary and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago. You see, at that time, there was a day where I was driving my car and while I was driving my car, I was drinking a soda. And after I finished the soda, I threw the bottle on the ground. You see, I had a problem. I was a litterbug. Well, there was a dog and his name was Jeff and Jeff’s pet peeve was littering.

So when Jeff saw me throw the bottle on the ground, he lost his temper. Yes, he lost his temper and then he followed me. Jeff followed me until I stopped finally at McDonald’s. And after I stopped at McDonald’s, Jeff yelled at me. He yelled at me for five minutes and then he drove his car away very fast.

Well, the day after that I had a job interview at Google. So that night I brushed upon speaking Spanish. You see, Google had an office in Spain and I wanted to work in Spain so that’s why I brushed up on speaking Spanish.

Well, the next day I had the job interview and when I arrived at Google’s office I met the vice president of Google. But there was a problem, you see the vice president of Google was Jeff the dog.

So when I saw Jeff I was very nervous, but fortunately for me, Jeff did not hold a grudge. Well, the interview went very well and Jeff liked me a lot. So after the interview was finished, Jeff offered me a job but only if I promised never to litter ever again.

Okay, so that’s the end of our third and final story in this lesson. Now that story was told from Gary’s point of view and the story was told as if it had already happened. So now that we’re at the end of this lesson, I’d like to ask you to listen to this lesson every day for seven days. I want you to do that because I want you to really understand how the words in each story change, okay? The point of view changes and some of the words change in the story. Now you’ll start to understand how they change by listening to this lesson every day for a week.

Alright then, that’s all for this lesson. I’ll see you next time.
