Bear University – Point Of View Lesson
Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English. And I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Now in this lesson, I’m going to tell you the same story three times, but each time I tell you that story I’m going to change the point of view for it. Okay, so first I want to tell you the story as if it’s happening right now. So let’s start.
There is a bear and his name is Scott and Scott is a student at Bear University in Los Angeles. And Scott has a roommate and his name is Bob and Bob is also a bear and Bob is also a student at Bear University. And unfortunately, Scott has a problem. Bob is getting on Scott’s nerves.
Well, one reason that Bob is getting on Scott’s nerves is because they are very different. Yes, it’s true that they are both bears and it’s also true that they both attend Bear University in Los
Angeles but that is where the similarities end. You see, Scott is a go-getter and Bob is a slacker.
Scott majors in business and he wants to be a stockbroker. Now Bob wants to major in partying but there’s no major for partying so Bob has no major at all. His major is undeclared. And there are more reasons as to why Bob is getting on Scott’s nerves.
For example, Scott studies a lot and Bob doesn’t study at all. In fact, Bob doesn’t do any school work. Instead, Bob stays at home and he blasts his music all day long so Scott is unable to study at home. Scott is unable to study at home because Bob blasts his music all day long. Well, I have another reason to tell you why Bob is getting on Scott’s nerves.
You see, Bob loves to party and he parties every day. And every day he parties until the wee hours of the night and he’s very noisy when he parties. So Scott is unable to sleep. He’s unable to sleep because every day Bob parties until the wee hours of the night and he’s very noisy. He’s very loud when he parties. Well, guess what? I have another reason to tell you as to why Bob is getting on Scott’s nerves.
You see, Bob spends all of his money on beer because remember, he parties every day. So he does not have any money to buy honey. And, y’know, bears like to eat honey. So guess what he does? Bob eats all of Scott’s honey so Scott has no honey to eat. He has no honey to eat because Bob eats all of Scott’s honey. Poor Scott. Poor Scott.
Well, I have some more information for you about both Bob and Scott. At the end of the semester, both Bob and Scott receive their grades and, this is hard to believe but it’s true, Scott fails all of his classes and Bob receives an A in all of his classes.
Well, Scott cannot believe it so the next semester, Scott acts like Bob. Scott parties every night and he never does any school work. And guess what? That semester, Scott receives all A’s just like Bob
Okay, so that’s the end of our first story in this point of view lesson. Now in that story, I told you the story as if it is happening right now in the present. Now next I want to tell you the story as if it will happen sometime in the future, okay? Alright, well then let’s start the story.
Sometime in the future there will be a bear and his name is going to be Scott and Scott is going to be a student at Bear University in Los Angeles. And Scott is going to have a roommate and his name is going to be Bob. And Bob is also going to be a bear and Bob is also going to be a student at Bear University. But unfortunately, Scott’s going to have a problem. Bob is going to get on Scott’s nerves.
Well, one reason he’s going to get on Scott’s nerves is because Bob and Scott are going to be very different people. For example, Scott is going to be a go-getter. Now Bob is going to be a slacker.
Scott is going to major in business and he’s going to want to become a stockbroker. Now Bob is going to want to major in partying but there isn’t going to be a major in partying, of course. So Bob isn’t going to have any major. His major is going to be undeclared.
Well, another reason that Bob is going to get on Scott’s nerves is because Scott is going to study a lot and Bob isn’t going to study at all. In fact, Bob isn’t going to do any school work. And Bob, instead, is going to blast his music all day long so Scott is going to be unable to study at home. He’s going to be unable to study at home because Bob’s going to blast his music all day long.
Well, there’s another reason that Bob is going to get on Scott’s nerves. You see, Bob is going to love to party and he’s going to party every day. And every day he’s going to party until the wee hours of the night and he’s going to be very loud when he parties. So Scott is going to be unable to sleep at night. Yes, Scott’s going to be unable to sleep at night because every day Bob is going to party until the wee hours of the night and he’s going to be very loud.
Well, there’s even another reason as to why Bob is going to get on Scott’s nerves. You see, Bob is going to spend all of his money on beer because he’s going to party every day so he isn’t going to have any money to buy honey. So guess what he’s going to do? He’s going to eat all of Scott’s honey. So Scott isn’t going to have any honey to eat. He isn’t going to have any honey to eat because Bob is going to eat all of Scott’s honey.
Well, Bob and Scott are going to receive their grades at the end of the semester and guess what? Scott is going to fail all of his classes and Bob is going to receive an A in all of his courses. You see, they’re both going to be surprised by this but the next semester Scott is going to act like Bob. Yes, Scott is going to party every night and he’s never going to do any school work. And that next semester, Scott is also going to get all A’s in his courses.
Okay, so that’s the second story in this lesson. Now for that story, I told you the story as if it will happen sometime in the future. Okay, so there’s one more story in this lesson. Now for this last story, I’m going to tell you the story from Scott’s point of view. And I’m going to tell you the story as if it’s already happened in the past. So you’re going to have to pretend that I’m a bear and my name is Scott for this one, okay? Alright, so let’s start.
Hello, I’m a bear and my name is Scott and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago. You see, at that time I was a student at Bear University in Los Angeles. And at that time, I had a roommate and his name was Bob. And Bob was also a bear and he was also a student at Bear University in Los Angeles. And at this time, I had a problem. Bob was getting on my nerves. Yes, it’s true. Bob was getting on my nerves.
One reason he was getting on my nerves is because Bob and I were very different types of people. You see, I was a go-getter and Bob was a slacker. I was majoring in business and I wanted to be a stockbroker. Now Bob wanted to major in partying but there’s no major in partying so Bob had no major. His major was undeclared. Remember, Bob was a slacker.
So another reason why Bob was getting on my nerves was because I studied a lot and Bob never studied at all. You see, Bob never did any school work. Instead of doing school work, Bob stayed at home and he blasted his music all day long so I was unable to study at home. I was unable to study at home because Bob blasted his music all day long.
Well, guess what? I’m going to tell you another reason as to why Bob was getting on my nerves. You see, Bob loved to party so he partied every day. And every day he partied until the wee hours of the night and Bob was very loud when he partied. So I was unable to sleep at night. I was unable to sleep at night because every day Bob partied until the wee hours of the night and he was very loud when he partied.
Well, guess what? There’s another reason as to why Bob was getting on my nerves at that time. You see, Bob spent all of his money on beer because he partied every day. So Bob did not have any money to buy honey, so guess what he did? He ate all of my honey. Yes, Bob ate all of my honey. I had no honey to eat. I had no honey to eat because Bob ate all of my honey.
Well, at the end of the semester, Bob and I received our grades, and guess what? This is hard to believe. I failed all of my courses and Bob received an A in every one of his classes. Yeah, so after that semester, for the next semester I decided to act like Bob. I partied every single night that semester and I never did any school work. And guess what? At the end of the semester, I received an A in all of my courses.
Okay, well that’s the end of the third and final story in this point of view lesson. So I want you now to just listen to this lesson every day for at least seven days, okay? And as you listen to each story, I want you to just think of the point of view that the story is being told from and just try to understand what’s happening in the story and when it’s happening, okay?
Alright then, that’s all for this point of view lesson. I look forward to seeing you again soon. Bye-bye.
