On The Rocks – Point Of View Lesson
Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English and I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, in this lesson I’m going to tell you the same story three times but each time I tell the story, I’m going to change the point of view. Okay, so first I want to tell you the story as if it is happening right now in the present. So let’s start.
This story is about Barney and Elizabeth and Barney and Elizabeth are married, but unfortunately, their marriage is on the rocks. Yes, their marriage is on the rocks because they only see each other for 43 minutes each day.
Well, Barney is a night owl and he goes to sleep at 5:45 a.m. each day. Now, he goes to sleep at 5:45 a.m. each day because he’s a workaholic so he works very late each day. Now, Elizabeth is not a night owl. She is an early bird and she wakes up at 5:30 a.m. each day and she wakes up at 5:30 a.m. each day because she likes to exercise early in the morning.
So you see, Barney and Elizabeth only see each other for 43 minutes each day because Barney is a night owl and Elizabeth is an early bird, so they are awake at different time during the day.
Well, unfortunately, Barney and Elizabeth get divorced and just two weeks after they get divorced, Barney falls to pieces. And after Barney falls to pieces, he stops working late each day. Well, Elizabeth also falls to pieces. She falls to pieces three weeks after they get divorced. And after she falls to pieces, she stops exercising early in the morning.
Well, after Barney stops working late each night, he no longer is a night owl. And after Elizabeth stops exercising early each morning, she is no longer an early bird. And Barney and Elizabeth realize that they miss each other and they love each other very much so they start to spend a lot of time together. And guess what? They get married for a second time and their second marriage is never on the rocks.
Okay, so that’s the end of the first story in this lesson, okay? Now in that story, I told you the story as if it’s being told in the present, so right now the story is being told, or the story is happening, I mean. Next, I want to tell you the story as if it’s going to happen in the future. So let’s say it’s going to happen 30 years in the future, okay? So let’s start the story.
30 years in the future, there will be a man named Barney and there’s going to be a woman named Elizabeth, and Barney and Elizabeth are going to get married and they’re going to get married in Los Angeles. And 9 years after they get married, their marriage is going to be on the rocks, unfortunately. Their marriage is going to be on the rocks because they are only going to see each other for 43 minutes each day.
Now, Barney is going to be a night owl, yes, he’s going to be a night owl. He’s going to go to sleep at 5:45 a.m. each day. Now, he’s going to go to sleep at 5:45 a.m. each day because he’s going to be a workaholic so he’s going to work late each day. Now, Elizabeth is going to be an early bird. She’s going to wake up at 5:30 a.m. each day and she’s going to wake up at 5:30 a.m. each day because she’s going to love to exercise early in the morning.
Well, unfortunately, Barney and Elizabeth are going to get divorced, yes. And just two weeks after they get divorced, Barney is going to fall to pieces. And after Barney falls to pieces, he’s going to stop working late each day. Now, Elizabeth is also going to fall to pieces. She’s going to fall to pieces three weeks after they get divorced. And after Elizabeth falls to pieces, she is going to stop exercising early in the morning.
Well, after Barney stops working late each day, he’s no longer going to be a night owl. And after Elizabeth stops exercising early in the morning, she’s no longer going to be an early bird. And Barney and Elizabeth are both going to realize that they love and miss each other very much so they’re going to start to spend a lot of time together. And then they’re going to get married for a second time and their second marriage will never be on the rocks.
Okay, that’s the end of our second story in this lesson. Now in that story, I told you the story as if it was going to happen in the future, 30 years in the future is when that story was taking place. So now I have one more story for you in this lesson. Now in this story, I’m going to tell you the story from Barney’s point of view and I’m going to tell you the story as if it has already happened, okay? So now you’re going to have to pretend I’m Barney when I’m telling the story. Alright, so let’s begin.
Hello, my name is Barney and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago. You see, at that time, you see, I was married to a woman named Elizabeth. Elizabeth and I got married in Los Angeles and unfortunately 9 years after we got married, our
marriage was on the rocks. Yes, our marriage was on the rocks because we only saw each other for 43 minutes each day.
You see, I was a night owl at that time. I went to sleep at 5:45 a.m. each day. You see, I went to sleep at 5:45 a.m. each day because I was a workaholic so I worked late each night. Now Elizabeth was not a workaholic and she was not a night owl. Elizabeth was an early bird. She woke up at 5:30 a.m. each day. Now she woke up at 5:30 a.m. each day because she liked to exercise early in the morning.
So, as you can see, Elizabeth and I only saw each other for 43 minutes each day because I was a night owl and she was an early bird.
Well, unfortunately, Elizabeth and I got divorced and just two weeks after we got divorced, I fell to pieces. And after I fell to pieces, I stopped working late each day. Well, Elizabeth also fell to pieces. She fell to pieces three weeks after we got divorced. And after Elizabeth fell to pieces, she stopped exercising early in the morning each day.
Well, after I stopped working late each day, I was no longer a night owl. And after Elizabeth stopped exercising early in the morning each day, she was no longer an early bird. And we both realized that we loved and missed each other very much so we started to spend a lot of time together. And after that, we got married for a second time and our second marriage was never on the rocks.
Okay, so that’s the end of our third and final story in this point of view lesson. Now that story was told from Barney’s point of view and it was told as if the story had already happened in the past. So I want you to listen to this lesson every day for at least seven days, okay? And as you listen to each one of these stories, I want you to remember the point of view that the story is being told from because you will see how the words in the story change as the point of view changes. Alright, this is a very powerful way for you to learn grammar without memorizing any grammar rules.
So please listen to this every day for at least seven days and I guess that’s all for this lesson then. So this is Joe from Learn Real English and I look forward to seeing you again soon. Bye-bye.
