Tandem Bicycle – Point Of View Lesson
Hi, I’m Joe Weiss and I’m one of the teachers and directors of Learn Real English. And I’d like to welcome you to this point of view lesson. Okay, in this lesson, I’m going to tell you a story from three different points of view. First, I’m going to tell you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present.
So let’s start.
There is a bear and her name is Katherine and Katherine has a boyfriend and his name is Charlie. And Charlie is also a bear. Well, one day Charlie proposes to Katherine and when Charlie proposes to Katherine, Katherine is very happy. And Katherine loves Charlie very much. So when Charlie proposes to her, she says yes.
Well, Katherine has a brother and his name is Bill. And Bill has a new car and that car is pink. And Bill loves to drive his new pink car. So Katherine asks Bill to drive her to the church on the day of her wedding. And, of course, Bill says yes. Bill agrees to drive Katherine to the church on the day of her wedding.
Well, on the day of Katherine’s wedding, Bill drives to Katherine’s house and Katherine gets in the car and then Bill starts to drive to the church. But unfortunately, soon there’s a problem. Yes, there’s a problem because a purple car hits Bill’s car.
Now, there’s a man driving the purple car and his name is Carlos. And Carlos hits Bill’s car because he doesn’t stop at the red traffic light. Carlos doesn’t stop at the red traffic light because Carlos doesn’t know that the traffic light is red. You see, Carlos just doesn’t know that the traffic light is red because Carlos is color blind.
Well, fortunately, no one is injured in the car accident. But unfortunately, Bill’s car has a flat tire and there’s not enough time to get a new tire before the wedding. You see, it’s already 12:00 and the wedding is to start at 12:30 so Bill is unable to drive to the church. And Bill and Katherine are unable to walk to the church because it’s too far away. You see, the church is five miles away so Katherine doesn’t know how she can get to the church before her wedding.
Well, fortunately, I have some good news and it’s about Carlos. Carlos is married and he and his wife love to ride bicycles. But after they get married they are only able to ride one bicycle so they buy a tandem bicycle. And Carlos has the tandem bicycle with him that day. It’s in his car. So Carlos gives Katherine the tandem bicycle and Bill and Katherine ride the bicycle all the way to the church. It takes them 29 minutes to get there so they arrive at the church just in the nick of time.
Well, Charlie and Katherine get married at the church that day. It’s a beautiful ceremony and all of their friends and family are there. And one year after that, Charlie and Katherine become the proud parents of not just one baby, but two. Two babies, because Katherine has twins. And for their first birthday, their Uncle Bill gets them a special present, a tandem bicycle.
Okay, so that completes our first story in the lesson. In that story, I told you the story as if it’s happening right now in the present. Next, I’m going to tell you the story as if it’s going to happen in the future sometime. So let’s start the story.
Thirty-two and a half years from now in the future, there will be a bear and her name’s going to be Katherine. And Katherine’s going to have a boyfriend and he’s going to a bear also and his name is going to be Charlie. And one day Charlie is going to propose to Katherine. Well, Katherine is going to be very happy when Charlie proposes to her and Katherine is going to love Charlie very much so when Charlie proposes to her, she’s going to say yes.
Well, Katherine is going to have a brother and her brother is going to be named Bill. And Bill is going to have a new car and that car is going to be pink. So Bill is going to have a new pink car and he is going to love to drive that new pink car. So Katherine is going to ask Bill to drive her to the church on the day of the wedding and Bill is going to love his sister Katherine very much so, of course, he’s going to agree to drive her to the church that day.
Well, on the day of the wedding, Bill is going to drive to Katherine’s house and Katherine’s going to get into Bill’s pink car and then Bill is going to start to drive to the church. But unfortunately, soon there will be a problem. Yes, there’s going to be a problem because a purple car is going to hit Bill’s car.
Now, there’s going to be a man driving that purple car and his name is going to be Carlos. And Carlos is going to hit Bill’s car because Carlos isn’t going to stop at a red traffic light. Carlos isn’t going to stop at the red traffic light because he isn’t going to know that the traffic light is red. You see, Carlos isn’t going to know the traffic light is red because Carlos is going to be color blind.
Well, fortunately, no one is going to be injured in the car accident, fortunately. But unfortunately, Bill’s car is going to have a flat tire and there isn’t going to be enough time to get a new tire before the wedding because it’s already going to be 12:00 then and the wedding is going to start at 12:30.
So Bill is going to be unable to drive to the church. And unfortunately, Bill and Katherine are going to be unable to walk to the church because it’s going to be too far away. You see, the church is still going to be five miles away from them. So Katherine is going to be upset because she isn’t going to want to be late for her wedding but she isn’t going to know how to get to the church.
Well, I have some good news for you and it involves Carlos. Carlos is going to be a married man and Carlos and his wife are going to love to ride bicycles. But they aren’t going to have enough money to buy two bicycles so they’re going to buy a tandem bicycle. And Carlos is going to have that tandem bicycle in the car with him that day. So Carlos is going to give the bicycle to
Katherine and Katherine and Bill are going to ride the bicycle all the way to the church. It’s going to take them 29 minutes to ride there but they’re going to arrive at the church just in the nick of time, just before the wedding starts.
Well, that day Charlie and Katherine are going to get married at the church and it’s going to be a beautiful ceremony and all of their friends and family are going to be there. And one year after that, Charlie and Katherine are going to become the proud parents of not just one, but two babies, because Katherine is going to have twins. And for their first birthday, their Uncle Bill is going to get them a special present, a tandem bicycle.
Okay, so that’s the end of our second story in this lesson. Now in that story, I told you the story as if it was going to happen sometime in the future. So for our last story in this lesson, I’m going to tell you the story from Katherine’s point of view. And I’m going to tell you the story as if it has already happened in the past, okay? So you’re going to have to pretend that I’m a bear named Katherine as I tell this story.
Alright, so let’s start.
Hello, I’m a bear and my name is Katherine and I want to tell you a story about something that happened to me a long time ago in the past. You see, at that time I had a boyfriend and he was also a bear and his name was Charlie. And one day Charlie proposed to me. Well, I was very happy when Charlie proposed to me and I loved Charlie very much. So when Charlie proposed to me, I said yes.
Well, I had a brother and his name was Bill, and actually I still have a brother named Bill. But anyway, at the time of this story, Bill had a new pink car and he loved to drive that car. So I asked Bill to drive me to the church on the day of my wedding. And, of course, Bill loved me very much so he agreed to drive me to the church on the day of my wedding.
Well, on the day of my wedding, Bill drove to my house and I got in Bill’s car and Bill started to drive to the church. But unfortunately, soon there was a problem. Yes, there was a problem because a purple car hit Bill’s car.
Now, there was a man driving the purple car and his name was Carlos. And Carlos hit Bill’s car because Carlos did not stop at a red traffic light. Yes, Carlos didn’t stop at the red traffic light because he didn’t know the traffic light was red. Carlos didn’t know the traffic light was red because Carlos was color blind.
Well, fortunately, no one was injured in the car accident. No one was injured when Carlos’ car hit Bill’s car. But unfortunately, Bill’s car had a flat tire and there wasn’t enough time to get a new tire before the wedding started. You see, it was already 12:00 and the wedding was to start at 12:30. So Bill was unable to drive to the church. And unfortunately, Bill and I were unable to walk to the church because it was too far away. See, the church was still five miles away from us so it was too far to walk to the church. Well, I was upset because I didn’t want to be late to my own wedding. Didn’t want to be late to my own wedding but I didn’t know how to get to the church.
Well, fortunately, there was some good news. Carlos was married and Carlos and his wife loved to ride bicycles. But they never had enough money to buy two bicycles so they bought one bicycle. They bought a tandem bicycle. And Carlos had the bicycle in his car that day. So Carlos gave me the tandem bicycle and Bill and I rode the bicycle all the way to the church. It took us 29 minutes to ride there so we arrived at the church just in the nick of time.
Well, that day Charlie and I got married at the church and it was a lovely ceremony, beautiful ceremony, and all of our friends and family were there with us. And one year after we got married, we became the proud parents of not one, but two babies, because I had twins. And for their first birthday, their Uncle Bill got them a special present, a tandem bicycle.
Okay, well, that’s the end of our third and final story in this lesson. So I want you to listen to this lesson every day for at least seven days. And as you listen to each one of these stories, I want you to just try and understand what’s happening in the story. And, of course, I want you to remember the point of view that the story’s being told from.
And I say to do this at least seven days because I want you to learn the material deeply. If, after seven days, you don’t feel like you have learned the material deeply yet, then listen to it longer, okay? More is better in this case.
Alright, well that’s the end of this point of view lesson then. I’ll see you next time.
