3: grammar: tag questions

Tag questions are statements followed by short questions in the same tense, called tags.

affirmative statement + negative tag:

it’s amazing, isn’t it?

she was in a talent show, didn’t she?

he’s dropped out of sight, hasn’t he?

that was a dumb thing to do, wasn’t it?

answer yes to agree:

she won the talent show, didn’t she?

Yes, she did.

negative statement + affirmative tag:

it’s not easy to become famous, is it?

she didn’t have connections, did she?

his career hasn’t taken off, has it?

that wasn’t too smart, was it?

answer no to agree:

that wasn’t too smart, was it?

No, it wasn’t.
