The tectonic plates are still moving today. This is what causes volcanoes and earthquakes. For example, the Pacific plate is rubbing against the North American plate. This causes a lot of earthquakes. The most famous was the earthquake of 1905, which destroyed the city of San Francisco. In fact, earthquakes and volcanoes are common all around the Pacific Ocean. It’s called the Ring of fire. The movement of the plates has also changed life on earth. Antarctica is covered in ice and snow now. But millions of years ago, it was covered in tropical forests. Australia broke away from the large continent of Gondwana a long time ago. So different animals evolved there. This is why Australia has so many unique animals like kangaroos and koalas.
