Track 55.
Apart from the economic benefits of tracking, its supporters claim that there are significant environmental benefits as well.
First, although burning gas produces carbon dioxide, which is the main greenhouse gas causing global warming, the quantities that it produces are far less than the quantities produced by burning coal and oil.
Some people estimate that it produces up to 50% less than the other fuels.
Burning coal and oil also produces sulfur and mercury, which can be very dangerous to health if breathed in.
Another benefit of tracking is that it reduces the amount of water needed for gas production.
There’s evidence that gas production through fracking uses half the water needed for coal, and a tenth of the water needed for oil.
One final benefit could be its use as a bridge to carbon-free energy.
This means that, although gas produces carbon dioxide, if gas can replace oil and coal, then the production of carbon dioxide will slow down and the development of renewable sources of energy can take longer.
