Unit 7- C
Presenter: Now I’m delighted to welcome Dr. Holly O’Neill to the studio today. She’s going to give us a few tips on keeping fit and healthy. Over to you, Dr. O’Neill.
Dr. O’Neill: Thank you, Ryan.
Well, I’d like to start by saying how important it is to eat properly. So many people miss out breakfast completely, or just have a coffee and a bit of bread, and that really isn’t a good idea. Others don’t eat anything during the day, and then have a very big, heavy meal at night, just before going to bed. That isn’t good for you, either.
No, the best thing is to eat regular, small meals throughout the day. And don’t add any salt to your food - it isn’t necessary. And drink lots of water as well. Tea and coffee don’t really help at all. Try to eat all sorts of things, to give your body a variety of proteins, minerals, vitamins, and so on.
Fruit and vegetables are especially good - eat at least five portions a day. You’ll feel much better for it, I promise you!
P: Sorry, five, did you say? That sounds a lot.
Dr. O’N: Well, you’ll get used to it. Then there’s the question of exercise.
Different people need different amounts of this, but a good general rule is to make sure you exercise regularly, perhaps two or three times a week. It can be walking or swimming or football or aerobics, whatever you like doing. You have to enjoy it, otherwise, you’ll give it up. Leave the car at home if you can, and walk to the post office or the shops - it’s cheaper!
Doing your own housework and gardening is pretty good exercise, too. Well, that’s it for today. Tomorrow I’ll be talking about stress and how that affects our health.
P: Well, thank you, Dr. O’Neill. We’ll remember all that and we’ll look forward to hearing your tips on dealing with stress tomorrow.
