Unit 1- C1
Jerry: How’s the quiz coming along. Daisy?
Daisy: Oh dear, Jerry, I haven’t even started it yet. Do you feel like helping me with it?
J: General knowledge, is it? Hmm. Um, how many questions do you need?
D: We only need about ten.
J: Well, shall we start with something easy, like who first stepped on the moon? Does everybody know it’s Neil Armstrong?
D: They might say Yuri Gagarin or the other American, Buzz Aldrin, mightn’t they?
J: Right. And for number 2, how about this - which country has the most TV sets?
D: Oh, that’s too easy, it’s the USA. Or maybe Japan.
J: Ha!
Got you! China’s got almost twice as many as the States.
D: Well, I never knew that! OK, now here’s one I’ve thought of - what’s the most expensive film ever made?
J: Hmm, no idea. Titanic?
Jurassic Park?
D: Gone with the Wind cost a lot to make, too,but actually it’s Titanic at 250 million dollars.
J: Wow! OK, and question 4 could be on great achievements - who was it who sailed across the Pacific on a raft, a tiny little boat made of wood - remember him?
D: Oh, now who was that? Um, Francis Chichester?
Scott of the Antarctic?
J: No, the Norwegian, Thor Heyerdahl.
D: Oh, good, this is coming on well. I know! We could ask how many hairs people have on their heads.
J: About a million, I should think.
D: Actually, it’s 100,000. And let’s have a sports question for number 6 - who was the youngest ever Wimbledon tennis champion?
J: Must be Boris Becker, or perhaps it was Michael Chang?
D: Wrong! Martina Hingis of Switzerland. She wasn’t even 16 when she won the women’s doubles.
I remember that.
J: Great, now we only need another four.
