Day 20 - Thought Groups

Hello and welcome to Day 20! You made it. In this lesson, I’ll help you break fast speech down into what we call thought groups. Are you ready?

English with Jennifer.

First, I’m going to show you a text. We’re going to mark it up in a way that will make listening easier.

What are thought groups? Thought groups are grammatical units. It’s how we think and how we speak. We think in words and phrases. Watch how I insert slashes to show where I naturally pause. Double slashes show a longer pause, a longer break between ideas. Within a thought group, there’s always a keyword, it’s the main content word that gets the most stress I’ll highlight them.

Now you ready for the next challenge.

I plan to tell you a little story about my past, and I’ll use fast speech. Here are some tips.

Don’t listen for individual words, instead, listen to understand whole ideas.

Sometimes you can understand an idea without catching every single word.

Let the keywords or stressed words help you.

This first listening will be done in parts. I’ll break up the video and show you the text.

So when I was 16, I joined a Filipino dance group.

I had to catch up to other kids who had been dancing for several years.

One day a parent walked in with the box the glasses and I was like, what are those for?

They said we were going to learn to dance with candles on her head.

I said really? No tape or anything?

So in a few months I learned the importance of balance and keeping your chin up.

And with the other girls I twirled around in a long dress.

Later I learned to kneel down, lie down, and even rollover with the glass in my head.

Amazing don’t you think?

With this second listening there’ll be no breaks. Remember to focus on ideas, not individual words.

Remember what may seem impossible at first really isn’t. With patience and practice along with some helpful tips, you can accomplish almost anything. Thanks for watching and happy studies!
