Lesson 4 - take out on, put up with
Hey there, everyone! It’s Jennifer and this is lesson 4 of Jennifer’s Phrasal Verb Challenge! So far, we’ve covered 6 phrasal verbs. Do you remember them all? Let’s review before we study two new phrasal verbs. Okay?
Remember you can gain more practice with me by following me on social media. First, let’s see if you can match the phrasal verbs to their meanings. Okay. Now I’ll show you a definition and you recall the phrasal verb. How did you do? Are you ready to talk about something new?
Let me ask how you handle anger. Do you hold it all inside or do you sometimes take your anger out on others? It’s not a nice thing to do, but sometimes we lose control when we get angry and we direct our anger towards those who don’t deserve it. Hopefully, those people love us enough to forgive us.
But we can’t expect them to put up with our bad moods day in and day out. “To take something out on someone” is to unfairly direct our anger towards another. We behave in a way the other person doesn’t deserve, but we do this because we’re upset. Two objects are required.
You can take your anger, your frustration out on someone. You may hear someone complain and say: You might have to apologize once you calm down and say: “To put up with something” means to tolerate it. You can put up with something. You can put up with someone.
It always takes an object. Remember that many phrasal verbs have a one-word equivalent that’s more formal, more academic. When you tolerate something, you don’t complain about it, although you have reason to. Here are a couple questions you can answer for practice.
Has anyone close to you had to put up with your bad moods? Did you ever take your anger out on someone in a public place, like a store or a restaurant? You can share your answers in the comments.
If you’d like the practice, then answer those questions in the comments That’s all for now.
